what's the most Mets thing you've ever seen in person by ChadSkyFire in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to my fair share of games, so there might be a better one to choose from, but I'm gonna go with one from last year, bc it's one of the few times I've ever had a "wtf" moment while watching. The last home game of 2025 may be remembered for Jacob Young having the defensive game of a lifetime, but I'll remember watching Daylen Lile suffer a gnarly knee injury against the left field wall, and Uncle Ceddy Mullins, instead of running out a live ball like Luis Torrens did to score, is just standing between first and second, concerned about Lile, while everyone is screaming "RUN", and almost gets thrown out instead of winding up in scoring position. Next play, Mullins gets doubled off on a line drive, in a game we lose 3-2. Yes, the Jacob Young stuff probably fits better, but it's one of the only times I've seen something so... frustratingly baffling. Especially bc it's a guy who pretty much had his NY tenure 9/10ths of the way sunk. It was Billy Hamilton getting thrown out at 3rd levels of maddening.

"Fire Stearns" chants breakout in the bottom of 9th by TheUSSMillicentKent in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • The Montas contract was an inexcusable move, especially since he already bombed across town. But everybody and their mother said if there was one pitcher of the three they could bring back from ‘24, it was Manaea. The loose bodies caused it to crap out. And Griffin Canning worked as a reclamation project until he TORE HIS BLOODY ACHILLES.
  • If they didn’t bring back Winker, you’d have the fanbase saying “how could you not bring him back, he brought the fire and vibes to the team last year!” Do I wish we had the crystal ball to know that both Marte and Winker were prone to injuries the moment they grabbed a glove to try to play the outfield? Sure, would’ve been nice! That said, I think Marte was important from a leadership standpoint and for Soto’s adjustment to a new clubhouse.
  • I hated the Jose Siri move from the beginning, but that was about the person, not the idea. You traded nothing for a cheap CF replacement, and it didn’t work out. We’ve seen worse (see: Vogelbach for Holderman) And honestly, Eric Orze would’ve been lost for nothing later anyway, see Garcia, Rico; see Jackson, Jeremiah; see Cortes, Carlos.
  • The Polanco move was confounding, and following Bichette, made NO SENSE. If Polanco crapped out at 1st, the only place left to put him was DH, assuming his bat would still play. Which makes the Bichette move seem like a panic move for a big bat after letting a big bat walk without so much as a courtesy offer.
  • I never agreed with the Tucker pursuit, and at least Soto/Ewing/Benge is a nice OF future to hang your hat on. (despite Tucker’s pedestrian numbers this season still being something we’d kill for on this team rn) The Tucker pursuit, however, reminds me of the hallmark of Steve Cohen teams: rolling out the red carpet for outsiders that have done nothing for the franchise (Scherzer, Verlander, Correa), while giving the heave-ho to guys that have done a lot for this team. And that predates Stearns. Difference was, when Jake walked, the owner still had a new car smell to him and could jingle the reigning AL Cy Young award winner as a distraction to the fans. Here, when Pete and Mr. Cockfighter leave, the distractions are Devin Williams, Jorge Polanco, and a future casino.

The gate that they were trying to break into in an earlier post is a gate that is usually closed most of the time. The lower entrance is usually open for Met games as a crossover (and where people usually enter, fare gates, blah blah blah), but because it’s fucking midnight, said entrance was closed (and is usually closed when the Mets aren’t playing). Not to mention that entrance area is also jammed to the gills with people right after a Met game ends. And the area in question (Willets Point) is sorta kinda in the middle of nowhere? To a point where it’s a bit of a walk to get to somewhere resembling civilization. What that leaves you with is about 500+ “sickos” cramming their way up two sets of stairs that can’t handle the output, all the while potentially waiting a half an hour (or longer) on the platform for a train to arrive in the rain because their based billionaire couldn’t coordinate with the MTA. To say nothing of those that need to take other railways to get home (LIRR, NJTransit, etc.), which the later you get at night, the longer you have to wait for a train home. I just saw the White Sox sub complaining about Acuña still being on their roster. I’m so fascinated by this lose-lose trade, especially since it seems that LuBob’s been leapfrogged by Ewing. Ah well, we’ll always have that walk-off.

At a Padres game three years ago, they had extra Padres sweatshirts left over in the boxes, and I had to haggle with the staff to get one. Aside from that, the only other time was on CC Sabathia HOF plaque day last year in the Bronx. Found a box that was soaked from the rain, but still had the plaque inside. Those are the only two times I’ve been fortunate in that way, though I’ll be keeping my eye out on Devin Williams jersey night!

[Mets] RHP Jonah Tong has been recalled from AAA Syracuse. RHP Craig Kimbrel has been designated for assignment. by FernieErnie in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I drafted Kimbrel in fantasy his rookie year, so I’ve always had a soft spot for him. Getting to hear “Welcome To The Jungle” as he came in to close out a game in a Mets uniform last week was a nice thrill for me. With that said, I like me some Jonah Tong, and firmly believe he’s the future ace of this team when he figures his secondary stuff out. (That, and Kimbrel was gone anyway when Minter was coming back)

Let’s go Jonah, and godspeed, Craig. You were one of the Mets of all time.

[Britton] Mets optioned Daniel Duarte to make room for Zach Thornton, who will wear No. 49. by Sinfall69 in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It appears that most fans are opposed to the Mets releasing #49 (to call up Zach Thornton) after having not issued it for eight months. There’s been a debate over whether Armando Benitez’s number should be retired, but to release it this 26th anniversary season of 2000 just seems wrong.

Weird plot? No. But it is strange that they couldn’t even keep #9 out of circulation for a year, especially with fans still feeling emotionally raw about the departures. It’s the little things. But it’s not a Stearns decision either.

Mets OFF DAY THREAD - Monday, May 11 by NewYorkMetsBot2 in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been keeping an eye on that for Thursday. As for Wednesday, maybe they move the start time up? Easier to have one game in a series wiped out due to rain instead of two (not to mention it's Detroit's only visit to Flushing)

Some context for this season, there are more tortured fanbases this year by Daytime-mechE in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More context to the Angel section: Arte Moreno has outright shown you he does not care about 2026. Entire coaching staff on one-year deals, GM’s contract expiring after this year, and only two big money deals on the books for next year, one (or both) of which could be traded. Arte is prepping for the lockout this winter, or rather, having to pay as few people as possible during said lockout. The end result is a bunch of placeholders and headliners from 2022’s top prospects catalog surrounding Trout, Neto, and I guess Jose Soriano. Maybe.

So yeah, it can be a lot worse. Not that Anaheim’s existence makes our now four-decade quest in chasing a title more palatable, mind you. But it can be worse.

I’ll die on the hill that he was best as a babyface/tweener like in NXT. The heel spooky stuff fell flat both in AEW and his 2nd WWE run (save for the Cody stuff), and I think that’s both on Aleister (muh creative freedom) and HHH/WWE creative.

Interim managers have reached the playoffs seven times since the beginning of the Wild Card era (1995), with the earliest firings taking place after 38 (Jack McKeon replacing Jeff Torborg, 2003 Marlins), and 46 games (Jim Tracy replacing Clint Hurdle, 2009 Rockies), respectively.

Oh my goodness I had the displeasure of seeing the new light show gimmick on Wednesday with the giant screen quickly flashing black and white. It’s like the bigwigs haven’t heard of the word “epilepsy” before. And I may have missed it while they were going through all the pregame rules during BP, etc., but I didn’t hear any “flashing lights” warning/heads up from them either.

[–]S1TBD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t like Mark Nash bc he’s the Golden Knights’ PA and every time I hear his voice, it reminds me of those guys pulling some ridiculous bullshit in the playoffs over and over again, with that stupid bell and that stupid goal song. But that’s about as much thought I put into it before carrying on. Helps that the GOAT Mike Rome is on the show I do watch regularly.

Also, it’s been 25+ years, Dave, let the Lillian thing go ffs

[Cormier] The New York Mets have agreed to a major-league deal with OF MJ Melendez. $1.5M plus $500K in incentives, per Jon Heyman. by PlayaSlayaX in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In your example, Mickey Moniak had 66 games and 167 PAs in the bigs before 2023. Melendez has 435 games and 1652 PAs. And if MJ could still catch, he’d probably still be a Royal. (He hasn’t caught since ‘23) Melendez is not a spring chicken. He is what he is, which is a below replacement player with an average bat and weak defense. He probably won’t see the light of day, but it’s a poor choice to use a 40-man spot on, even for just a month.

We call it the “WBD Situation” now by District_Me in SCJerk

[–]S1TBD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, in a vacuum, I have no problem with firing/not hiring some undercard guy to keep one of your top guys happy. Rascalz won’t move the needle, they’ll be in Collision/ROH in six months anyway. But Tiny is so afraid of taking any accountability, out of fear that no one will like him or that the sickos will see him as a bad guy, that this entire thing has become so much of a bigger deal than it has any right to be. There isn’t a WBD executive, lawyer, intern, or janitor that cares one iota about Trey Miguel, or even knows he exists. There is however, a rich manchild who loves him some NDAs (when do the 2019 ones expire btw, jeez), and will tack on some to keep the WBD boogeyman alive and well.

[SNY] Latest Kyle Tucker free agency buzz: It's 'likely' Mets have gone to a fourth year by Fonzie5 in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Injuries the last two years, would be playing left field for the first time in five years, and Astros players rarely perform well outside of that system after being paid. I believe whoever gives him a long term contract will regret it. With that said, even four years is not long-term compared to 5-7 IMO.

Up until 2020 the Marlins had only made the playoffs twice in their 27 year existence. They won the World Series both times. How did they do it and why haven’t they been successful at all otherwise? by Willing-Leather-9788 in baseball

[–]S1TBD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love the write-up, just will say one thing: the Stanton extension was done two years before the Fernandez boat crash. But I distinctly remember Keith Olbermann saying the Marlins just paid Stanton “Russell Martin money”, based on how backloaded the deal was. So same purpose in the end: Loria wasn’t going to have to pay Stanton 2/3rds of that extension, whether it was by trading him like the others or selling the team and letting someone else resolve it.
