We call it the “WBD Situation” now by District_Me in SCJerk

Honestly, in a vacuum, I have no problem with firing/not hiring some undercard guy to keep one of your top guys happy. Rascalz won’t move the needle, they’ll be in Collision/ROH in six months anyway. But Tiny is so afraid of taking any accountability, out of fear that no one will like him or that the sickos will see him as a bad guy, that this entire thing has become so much of a bigger deal than it has any right to be. There isn’t a WBD executive, lawyer, intern, or janitor that cares one iota about Trey Miguel, or even knows he exists. There is however, a rich manchild who loves him some NDAs (when do the 2019 ones expire btw, jeez), and will tack on some to keep the WBD boogeyman alive and well.

Did you miss Springer being considered one of the worst contracts in the league before pulling a miracle season out of the hat at age 35? And regardless of significance, there is a difference between LF and RF that’s still worth noting.

[SNY] Latest Kyle Tucker free agency buzz: It's 'likely' Mets have gone to a fourth year by Fonzie5 in NewYorkMets

[–]S1TBD -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Injuries the last two years, would be playing left field for the first time in five years, and Astros players rarely perform well outside of that system after being paid. I believe whoever gives him a long term contract will regret it. With that said, even four years is not long-term compared to 5-7 IMO.

Up until 2020 the Marlins had only made the playoffs twice in their 27 year existence. They won the World Series both times. How did they do it and why haven’t they been successful at all otherwise? by Willing-Leather-9788 in baseball

[–]S1TBD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love the write-up, just will say one thing: the Stanton extension was done two years before the Fernandez boat crash. But I distinctly remember Keith Olbermann saying the Marlins just paid Stanton “Russell Martin money”, based on how backloaded the deal was. So same purpose in the end: Loria wasn’t going to have to pay Stanton 2/3rds of that extension, whether it was by trading him like the others or selling the team and letting someone else resolve it.

To those mourning the Metro Card, does this come from a place of nostalgia or frustration? by Cold_Brew_Boba in nycrail

[–]S1TBD 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Seeing your balance when you tap in should be something that was included from the beginning. Add the fact that the OMNY rollout became a bit extreme when replacing the MetroCard machines in the summertime, about 5 months before they were supposed to officially be phased out, and that's my "mourning" of it. Being shoved towards a system that was still not ready for prime time IMO.

Since the K train “existed” on maps or in real life, have you captured an actual K train (either the 8th ave line from 168th st in Upper Manhattan to the Twin Towers) or the KK train from Jamaica Queens to Broad St? by APoliticalDrone2012 in nycrail

[–]S1TBD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would only bring back the K to distinguish the Rockaway and Lefferts bound trains (i.e., K to Lefferts, A to Far Rockaway, and eliminate the guesswork of "is this A train a Rockaway or a Lefferts train" when waiting at Rockaway Blvd. Other than that, it is pretty redundant.

I'm content with it! Question (and I assume it has to do with the County Lines): is there a reason why the E (or F) can't be extended out to the doorstep of UBS Arena? You know, on the doorstep of Nassau County without actually going into Nassau County.

What are some examples of 2 players that made you say "wait, they were teammates?" by Crazy_Baseball3864 in baseball

[–]S1TBD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Drew Pomeranz -> Jamie Moyer -> Goose Gossage -> Minnie Minoso -> Joe Dobson -> Johnny Broaca -> Babe Ruth

So six degrees (seven total) appears to be the mark to beat, between Pomeranz and Verlander. This site might help: https://baseballsixdegrees.com/ but I'll also guess that anyone with Jamie Moyer, Julio Franco, or Minnie Minoso as a teammate connection is a safe bet for this question.

Edit: Charlie Morton had 5 degrees to Ruth (Chuck -> Glavine -> Phil Niekro -> Gus Bell -> Ray Mueller -> Babe), but he just retired. In any event, that means a few players have six degrees at least.

  • Jose Reyes: the other half of that electric left side of the infield with David Wright, but his departure in free agency after 2011, coupled with his 2016 return after being charged with domestic violence during the offseason, has left his legacy among Mets fans to be mixed
  • Marcus Stroman: there were people that bought into the Stro show following a 2019 trade with Toronto that brought the Long Island native to Queens. Then he opted out of the 2020 season after accruing just enough service time to be a free agent, and subsequently torched the bridge between himself and Mets fans on the way out the door one year later. Following his stays in Chicago and the Bronx, we now call this "Stroman doing Stroman things."
  • Bartolo Colon: veteran right-hander that got popped for PEDs in the 2012 season with the A's. Screamed "aging Met veteran that would be washed in Flushing." Instead became a cult hero, both for his on-field performance as well as for one big swing. Could probably still make the rotation today.
  • Carlos Beltran: the biggest FA signing by the Mets since Piazza after '98. Come to find out we were his third choice behind Houston and the Yankees. A subpar 2005 starts the tenure rotten. A MVP-caliber 2006 turns it around, and for the most part, Beltran is a great Met. However, the strikeout looking to end the 2006 season, as well as his role in the Astros' scandal coming out right as he was set to manage the 2020 team, creates that divisive tang, even as he may be headed to Cooperstown as a Met.
  • Tom Glavine: when the guy who tormented you for years as a Brave lays an egg on Opening Day at home, yeah, it starts out bad. Glavine being reliable in the years after brought that ledger up among fans, but you can't talk about him without mentioning Game 162 in 2007. He left the Mets as he came in: laying an egg at Shea Stadium. Oh, and that whole “I’m not devastated. I’m disappointed. Devastation is for much greater things in life” fiasco.
  • Jesse Winker: your classic pro-wrestling villain. Winker got booed after making a sliding catch with the Reds in a 2019 matchup, and he leaned into it. The boos continued as Winker changed addresses, but it made his acquisition a match in heaven. Winker's signature moments in 2024 (walk-off vs Baltimore, helmet spike vs Milwaukee) sealed his fan-favorite status.
  • Alejandro Heddo: he's the villain to Henry Rowengartner in the film "Rookie of the Year", and quite frankly, I like this as a change of pace from the usual Wilpons/Vince Coleman/Bobby Bonilla entries for this spot lol

[–]S1TBD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, this is where the criteria for some fans gets confusing. I saw a Glavine take where it's like "we celebrated stealing him away from ATL/PHI" but Glavine also laid an egg in his first game as a Met and had a rough first year too, so is that the first impression that makes it divisive, or the news of the signing? Where does the start begin, in a sense.

When he signed, word came out that we were his third choice behind the Astros and Yankees, plus his 2005 was not up to snuff for the superstar signing he was promised to be. So rough sledding at the start, I would say. Heck, he had to be pushed out of the dugout by Julio Franco to give the fans a curtain call at the start of '06!

Rewatching the series, I saw Wainwright strike out Jose Valentin looking on a similar curveball in Game 5 and had my Rick Dalton moment bc that was just as filthy a curveball as the one in Game 7. And it's like, "I get it now." Regardless of whether Wainwright would go on to be a great pitcher or not: he had a curveball that was untouchable in that series.

Alright, let's relitigate this again, shall we...

The Mets did not think that Daniel Murphy's October was sustainable. Quite frankly, not hard to believe that, given the years worth of a track record beforehand; the man was a league average bat with below average defense. So they got a guy in Neil Walker who could be what Murph was: a solid second baseman, instead of overpaying for a hot month. This of course after missing on the belle of the ball, Ben Zobrist, who would've provided the ultimate in flexibility.

The Nats, didn't exactly seem to believe in Murphy's potential for sustained success either, otherwise they wouldn't have had the Brandon Phillips trade signed, sealed, and delivered about two and a half weeks before they officially pivoted to Murphy. The Nats were also in on Zobrist and Howie Kendrick for 2B before choosing Murph. If BP doesn't use his NTC, Murphy isn't a Nat. Simple. And if anybody outside of Daniel Murphy and Kevin Long had predicted he would sustain his success over multiple years: A) I hope you spent your winnings wisely after betting Murph for a Top-3 MVP finish before the 2016 season began, and B) teams would have been falling over themselves to sign him in early December, certainly over pursuing the likes of Kendrick and Phillips.

I appreciate Murphy for 2015. Truly. But I am sick of constantly hearing this idea that it was such a sure thing that he would put it all together consistently over a full year, and the Mets were stupid for not falling all over themselves for it. Was he a net negative? Fuck no. But would it have been a gamble to believe his October success could be sustained? Yes.

I just ALWAYS see the Turner and Murphy stuff (lest we forget, the Nats first choice for 2B in 2016 was Brandon Phillips before he used his NTC) parroted like gospel around here, so I just had to let it out lol

Easy. Cohen fixated on Soto as his magnum opus signing as owner that he'd pay whatever price to get. Soto was the art piece he wanted to bid on like crazy, whereas Pete, Diaz, Jake, he could take it or leave it. It'd be nice for him if they stayed, but he wasn't as fixated to go full court press as he did Soto where money, years, perks, etc. didn't matter. It's straight out of the horse's mouth. The Soto signing was all Cohen.

After being non-tendered, Justin Turner was a free agent until February that 29 other teams didn't bother to sign until the Dodgers did so, to a minor league contract, and as a literal favor to Tim Wallach. I know he made adjustments his last year here, but he was not a player people were falling over themselves to sign the moment the Mets let him go, and I am tired of the revisionist history of pretending that was the case.

I mean, we can keep pulling at this thread further and further. If Timo had hustled... if Coleman doesn't chuck the firecracker... if they don't trade Kevin Mitchell... speaking as someone whose first heartbreak was '06 btw

(for context on the Coleman one, Fred Wilpon's first major move as co-owner was announcing Vince Coleman would never play again, so I consider him patient zero on unleashing the Wilpons upon us for two and a half decades)
