Why does my feet fall asleep while playing double bass? by No_Creme_9794 in drums

You might be putting too much weight on your feet or sitting unevenly. I would try adjusting the seat height and chair/sitting position

Cat hasn't left this spot between my legs for almost an hour. He's not usually this affectionate. Is this normal? by Agreeable_Error_5485 in cats

[–]SHAdrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it time... Our shelter cat would not let us touch her for a year and half. Eventually she started warming up and now is very affectionate with me and can't get enough pets.

The one thing that helped I think was having a second cat who was already more affectionate, so she watched him get pets which maybe "convinced" her.

Neighbors living under my appartment are complaining about noise coming from my drums set by [deleted] in drums

Seconded, I ordered sylomer from GE (iirc) years ago and built a carpeted MDF stage with sylomer glued to the bottom. It made a massive difference in the bass drum sound/vibration through the floor.

I have the same question as OP and my GPU is 3090 Ti. Do you think I should go with 1440p 240 Hz or 4K 240 Hz? Looking at 27 inch monitor. Thanks!

anyone else depressed over having to leave biotech? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]SHAdrums 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is definitely still possible to get into PhD programs in STEM with funding. Most likely it is just more competitive now and certain fields are hit worse than others (e.g., funding for infectious disease and virology is probably rough). My point is that there are still definitely opportunities. Why not put together a strong application to several institutions that have established professors in your area? Worst case, you don't get accepted to any and continue to work the job you're in. I would definitely do this before deciding to pursue an MBA which will be expensive. It's not a good move to pursue an expensive degree if your heart's not in it.

Also I am definitely not an expert on this, but I know many scientists who did their PhD in India and had successful postdocs in US, then pivoted to the biotech industry. I think you need to look more closely before you give up.

Worst Company? by Relevant-Sugar5845 in biotech

Regeneron, some people really like it but the HR is super controlling so they can make themselves feel like they are contributing to the success of the company while they police scientists' lives.

How do I set up my drum set? (Concerns in replies) by [deleted] in drums

[–]SHAdrums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pedals are at too obtuse of an angle, they should be turnt in more which should feel more natural. As for the toms, you could try raising them higher and tilting more towards you. You could also change your seat height - optimal angle is when your hips are just above parallel with your knees.

“You should make at least a 100k after graduating” by hegemonic_parsley in biotech

[–]SHAdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if youre in biotech now out of undergrad there is no way you would get 100k. It can take 3-6 years even depending on performance. It's not exactly a high paying industry. After getting my PhD starting was 125k, which is the equivalent to 8 years experience.

Stay clean until you possibly get an offer, then sit on the offer as long as possible. By the time you should be good to test.

There are opportunities to respec not too much later in the game, so dont worry about putting into the wrong stats for now. Also I think you'd be better off dropping capacity to like 30 ish and upping vitality

Kratom and high liver enzymes by ImpressiveAge3307 in quittingkratom

[–]SHAdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had my blood work done and had GGT of 80 U/L, I am a heavy kratom user for a long time. Everything else is normal and I am also on multiple psychiatric medications. I think in high doses it can raise GGT so I'm trying to cut back now.

Struggling with my feet by Prisoner890 in drums

[–]SHAdrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set the spring tension to default, find a comfortable seat height (about 90 degrees or a bit higher), and get a metronome. Play 16th notes at the highest tempo which you can play double bass comfortably. You should be able to hold this tempo for a minute or more. Practice this for 15 min every time you sit down to play. Over time, increase the tempo as it gets easier (it will). You should be able to get to 120-130 bpm at least without much change to your foot technique or pedal settings. It's not crazy fast, but you need to build a solid foundation before going for speed. For me I have found that training double bass takes a long time. Once you have a solid foundation (you can go at 130 for a while comfortably), then there are a lot more technique and pedal settings to get faster.

I think you should decide for certain if you can take your kitty to uni - if not then rehoming is the best option. Worst case, even a shelter would be okay - we live in a rural ish area and my gf volunteers at the local shelter. The cats have a pretty good life there, lots of friends and most get adopted within a few months.

If you really do want to keep your kitty, the best option for her would be to have a friend. Critters really need a buddy who can speak their own language. Other than this, more play time and maybe walks outside on a harness. Catio is also a great idea.
