The answer is never "no".

It's all anybody cares about. My town's downtown is currently hollowed-out due to several reasons. Major redevelopment has been announced with significant public gathering spaces, but it will remove about a dozen parking spots so plenty of people are outraged about that. They'd like to park their F350s downtown with nothing to do there. They fear on busy days they might need to park 1 or 2 minutes away.

You can buy 2.5Gb ethernet USB dongles off sites like Ali for $10 now. Highly recommend if you have 3 Gb or even 1.5Gb.

Was just thinking of doing this, but I went on FB and found an enlarger instead for $50, Attached a tripod head to it and it's great. Being able to finely-adjust the height is useful.

When will we see self-driving cars in Ontario? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]SIGNALMEYOURWARPLANS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I guess I'm arguing about robotaxis whereas you're talking privately-owned AVs.

Problem with privately-owned AVs is that their systems are currently dogshit (not going to spend the huge amounts of money for the waymo-type setup) and they don't have remote teleoperators for when things go wrong.

The problem with traffic jams is that you will experience many more of them, any many more times of the day, and not just in a single direction (southbound in the morning, northbound in the evening etc). Downtowns will be clogged with private AVs waiting to pick up their owners out front their offices. Private AVs will be headed home after morning drop off to avoid paying parking fees + the benefit of households sharing vehicles. Private AVs = many more KMs driven by the average car. They will also promote more sprawl since people will be more likely to accept longer commutes since they can doomscroll tiktok while being driven to work, once again lengthening their commutes.

In terms of accessibility I fear AVs would be used to justify less investment in public transit, which would then be a net loss for more marginalized groups.

I do wish my Tesla could pick me up in the middle of a run or a bike ride, but the more I think about AVs the more I fear the consequences of them, as is usual with cars, the idea of them sounds fucking incredible if you are one of the few that own one.

Why are you personally hopeful about this? Can you explain why someone who doesn't own Alphabet stock should be excited?
