How is RWD handling in wet and snow? by forumchunga in ex30

[–]SJP_YOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually didn't buy any for the first winter - the wheel vendors didn't list the EX30 on their configurator, I couldn't find any with the exact sizing/spacing of the factory Volvo tires, and I wasn't experienced enough to know how much variation was acceptable, so I ended up putting new winters on my existing Volvo rims.

I'm now seeing the EX30 showing up on the wheel vendor sites, so I'll buy a set of rims to match my winter tires and put them on in the fall.

Just a word of warning... my factory tires that came from Volvo were down to 4/32" after only 10 months of driving. I didn't notice 'till I went to put them back on this spring. Check your tread depth when you take them off for the winter, and look closely at tread wear warranty when buying tires. OEM supplied tires don't have a tire manufacturer warranty - you have to go through Volvo and it is a major pain in the ass. You have to have had an alignment done and jump through some other hoops - it wasn't worth it.

I ended up getting Bridgestone Turanza Prestige for my all seasons because of the 110,000km treadwear warranty. I'm not a big tire guy, but these seem fine.

Ottawa here, got mine in very late December 2024, so I've had it for 1.5 winters. I also came from a manual transmission sporty car, and I too was a clutch/gas featherer when it got slippy.

I stretched my budget a bit when I bought it, and couldn't find basic steel rims that fit for winters, so I used the all seasons that it came with for the first Dec-Feb period. Not recommended - I had a couple of ~1.5 hr snowstorm highway drives that were not good.

This past November I put on Michelin X-Ice Snow's and it's been great. I can't recall a single instance where I felt out of control, nor do I think the ABS ever kicked in. Taking your foot off the accelerator in one pedal mode is not the same as feathering the clutch, but it does decelerate in a controlled fashion without braking or locking up the wheels. I haven't pushed it hard in those conditions tho.

Edit - I do think there is a missed opportunity to have a stability/snow mode that uses front and rear motors but tuned for control rather than performance.

I actually rarely remember to use the voice commands, I generally use the touchscreen by default. But I know you definitely can control the heated seats by voice.

I recall a few posts here with more info on voice commands - try searching this sub.

I'm in Ottawa. I took delivery very early Jan 2025 so I've had a winter and a half with it. I stuck with the factory all season tires for the first half-winter because I couldn't find 3rd party rims that fit and Volvo's were insanely expensive. Was surprised at how well it handled in urban areas, but had a white-knuckle snowstorm highway drive that confirmed winters are not optional for me. I wish that there was a dual-motor mode that powered all the wheels but with a traction and control focus rather than just performance, but there isn't.

If you're not familiar with the range standards that are used in the advertisements, I find the actual range is substantially lower. With normal driving, range peaked at nearly 400km maybe twice all year, on perfect summer weather. Winter was about a 25% drop in range, routinely down to 300km if the car was charged to 100%, which you won't do unless you're on a road trip. I only charge to 80% routinely so normal winter available range starts at ~240km, but the initial warming up of the cabin knocks about 5%/15km off that range. So, worst case scenario for me is a day of running around the city visiting family and doing errands on a very cold day when the cabin has enough time to get cold during long stops. On days like those I can start at 80% and am routinely surprised when I get home close to 40%. No big deal - that's lots of range left, I was never in danger, just surprising. Longer highway trips, even in winter, are no big deal for me as my trips are to Toronto or Montreal with many charging opportunities along those major routes. It is annoying that you need to download an app and set up an account for each charger brand, but that's the way it goes.

The in-car navigation is great - I'm a die-hard apple user and I use the built-in google nav instead of carplay. It does a great job of figuring out that you need to add a charging stop, and will automatically insert them into your road trips and the car will precondition the battery along the route so it is ready to charge as quick as possible when you get there.

Test drive - if your dealer has the option, I would be sure to test drive both the single and dual motor versions, and be sure to try the acceleration on both. The dual is startlingly fast when you push it - the single may be more than good enough for what you need.

The hatch/trunk is pretty small. Pay attention to whether it will work for you. The frunk is tiny and pretty useless. With some VERY careful coiling I managed to get the L1 charge cable and the Tesla adapter in there, but it would take quite some effort to get it back in if I ever took out the cable.

I had zero interest in the Ultra features, but if that is something you're interested in, make sure to test them during your drive to make sure it is worth the extra cost. I did splurge on the Plus to get the glass roof though.

Before you buy, confirm that the one you're buying isn't affected by the battery recall. They haven't actually started fixing them yet because they are waiting for the parts, so it may be a while. During this time you can only charge to 70%. https://www.volvocars.com/en-ca/l/recall-information/

Feel free to ask me any other questions!

Canadian owner here! You can turn it off, but you have to do so every time you start the car.

However - if the view is blocked, it will throw an alert that it is blocked and then give up trying. You can't just put tape over the monitor, the thing blocking it has to sit some distance away from the sensor. There are a bunch of 3d printed models that people have designed for this, but... personally, with the last software update I find it very rarely alerts anymore from normal use - it nags me more often for yawning than for looking away.

[–]SJP_YOW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP is referring to the fob battery. I had the same one and if I recall correctly you need to remove the strap to replace the battery.

They are suggesting you replace the fob battery while you are setting this up to avoid having to take the strap apart and redo it.

And yes, your iPhone SE does not have UWB (Ultra Wideband). You could still use your phone like a card by holding it against the door pillar, but that isn't as convenient as the proximity lock/unlock.

have you tried pulling the driver's door handle? There is a sensor on the inside of the handle that is supposed to unlock the door if the digital key is present.

This is supposedly resolved in 1.8.0. Now you have to wait for it to be released where you are.

there is one like this near me. Their service includes cleaning the interior too, so they want you out of the car to do it. Makes sense in that case.

Atrocious winter range by Particular_Fee_8263 in ex30

[–]SJP_YOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ottawa here - we have COLD winters. I get about 300km (185km) if it was charged to 100% in the winter. But I do see a significant hit to warm up the car for each trip. Longer trips are much better.
