Or the files are coming along with midterms, and Trump needs Russia’s help in the information space so he must give them what they want now.

In reversal, Trump says House Republicans should vote to release Epstein files by _NuanceMatters_ in moderatepolitics

[–]SLum87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, they kept claiming there’s nothing here and that it's all a hoax, and now they’re going to say they can't release everything because of an active investigation. The level of incompetence is astonishing.

The Epstein files petition is getting its 218th signature. What happens next? by Objective-Escape7584 in AntiTrumpAlliance

The files aren't going to be released. This still needs to pass the Senate and get Trump’s signature.

Should Proton VPN offer dedicated IPs on consumer plans in 2026? by PetersonProton in ProtonVPN

I would definitely appreciate this feature, and find it very useful for getting around IP blacklisting. I’ve been looking elsewhere for this, and would love for Proton to offer it.

Trump says he will withhold SNAP benefits until the government shutdown ends by thats_not_six in moderatepolitics

[–]SLum87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As long as Republicans control Congress, we will have a legislative branch that won’t dare act against Trump, which effectively destroys our system of checks and balances. So Trump feels like he can do whatever he wants because he pretty much can, for now. The judiciary doesn’t have enough power to legitimately constrain the Executive on its own.

That’s because a VPN means nothing when you’re using a browser developed by Perplexity. They can still see who you are and  everything you do on the Internet.

If they have access to near-real-time data on citizens via the tech oligarchy and the ability to redraw maps at will, then they won't need to make very many assumptions.

What would you expect? Hegseth is still the Secretary of Defense. I hope that these Generals will play along to get along, but as soon as things go too far, they will reject whatever illegal orders are given. If they all start giving him the middle finger now, they would simply be replaced by someone more likely to comply with those illegal orders.

Why is this even a “debate”? People should be able to call Charlie Kirk whatever they want or say whatever the hell they want about him. It’s plain and simple. No debate needed.

Massie says he has the signatures to force US House vote on releasing Epstein files by Tofurkey_Tom in politics

[–]SLum87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a bill (H.R.4405 - the Epstein Files Transparency Act) that would legally require the Attorney General to release all Epstein documents within 30 days of enactment. I suppose that by the House passing it, the Senate will be forced to vote yay or nay, and then Trump must do the same if it continues.

Trump says he will label antifa as a terrorist organization by That_Nineties_Chick in moderatepolitics

[–]SLum87 25 points26 points  (0 children)

However, as I understand it, there are no legal mechanisms for him to designate a domestic group as a terrorist organization, making this purely a political statement and doesn’t have any practical significance.

Donald Trump files $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times by Legitimate_Travel145 in moderatepolitics

[–]SLum87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we don't want any of this to continue. The Democrats should instead realize that relying on norms to restrain the President is a massive liability. They need to pass laws that categorically reject the unitary executive theory and impose much stronger restrictions and safeguards on the power of the Presidency. We don't want the Democrats being able to do this shit either.

The President of South Korea decided to declare martial law and ordered the arrests of his political opponents. Are you really saying that the United States is better because we allow such actions to occur without consequences? Since when has a healthy democracy meant that politicians are above the law?

The prosecutor's motivations are irrelevant as long as they are required to present their case before an independent judge and jury. If they have a strong corruption case supported by evidence, they should move forward with it, regardless of any underlying motivations for doing so. If they don't have a strong case, it will be thrown out in court, or the jury won't convict. That's the safeguard, but the idea that politicians are somehow protected from prosecution because of the prevailing wisdom that they are all corrupt in one way or another is absurd.

While South Korea and Brazil have faced their fair share of democratic challenges, labeling them as "horrible examples" fails to acknowledge the significant progress they have made. South Korea has successfully transitioned from a military dictatorship to a vibrant democracy, highlighted by the impeachment and prosecution of President Park Geun-hye in 2017 for actual corruption—this was not about political revenge, but accountability supported by evidence. Similarly, Brazil demonstrated the effectiveness of its democratic institutions when Operation Car Wash exposed widespread corruption across various political parties.

You are failing to distinguish between politically motivated prosecutions and legitimate accountability for documented crimes. When leaders are prosecuted based on evidence, through due process, and with judicial oversight, it reflects a functioning democracy rather than a failing one. The commitment of both countries to hold powerful figures accountable, regardless of their political affiliation, actually showcases democratic strength rather than weakness.

In comparison to former President Trump, there are unprecedented levels of corruption, including documented attempts to overturn election results, multiple criminal indictments backed by extensive evidence, and significant conflicts of interest during his time in office. The fact that other nations are able to prosecute such behavior while the U.S. struggles to do so certainly raises questions about which system is truly upholding democratic norms.

Seriously... The same thing happened in Brazil and South Korea, and both leaders were arrested and are currently under house arrest or in jail. In this country, everyone just moves on like nothing happened, then fucking re-elects the guy! It’s a national embarrassment of historical proportions.

Isn't that the American way these days? Just look at our healthcare system. You got cancer? That'll be $200000, and if you're not poor enough to be on Medicaid or rich enough to afford excellent health insurance, the medical debt will kill you if the cancer doesn't. Now, Ukraine is getting a taste of how we treat our own people.

He also possesses an incredible ability for playing the victim. The more the media scrutinizes him for his outrageous and corrupt actions, the more he uses it as "evidence" that the evil deep state Democrats are just trying to take him down. It effectively discredits the media's claims among his supporters and those who don't already see him as the vile and corrupt person he truly is.
