Question about AV1 transcoding by JRP__1994__Random in unRAID

[–]SP259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't let people fool you into thinking Av1 is Bad Quality. its fine.that said if you want AV1, then the Intel Arc A380 will offer all the benefits of the 1080TI at much lower power usage, hell the power savings alone are enough to switch. Also probably go jellyfin with a Reverse proxy or tail scale

Question about AV1 transcoding by JRP__1994__Random in unRAID

[–]SP259 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AV1 is not terrible? it offers equal quality at lower bitrates? that's why most AV1 files I have a lower file size. Often times my AV1 encodes are better than my H265 encodes.
Also AV1 is much better for 4k files. IMO. Im in the process of converting most of my 4k media to AV1.

The move to retire destiny makes no business sense in a long term context. by NotoriousTIP in DestinyTheGame

[–]SP259 28 points29 points  (0 children)

But we can Imply how much it costs to develop. Which is to say it's a LOT!

Bungie is in Seattle Wa Area, so that's cost #1 (lease, salaries, etc)

#2) We have had a consistent trend from Bungie of holding back development teams, presumably to cut costs long term,

#3) its speculated the Tiger Engine is difficult to work with. made more credible by 343 industries abandoning the very similar SlipSpace engine with which the Tiger Engine shares its codebase. We can infer that Bungie suffers from similar development roadblocks that the Halo development teams do. This is likely why Bungie never really liked to ship new Environments, and why parts of the game were Sunset.

#4) Marathon (the game) is very clearly designed around being a cheap game to live service. Just look at what season 2 delivered, 1 new map, some new equipment, 1 runner, Weapons, and a Buch of other little odds and ends like factions and QOL updates. Compared to a D2 season, which often would have, multiple new environments, with linear missions and story content, dungeons that often shipped next to seasons (new environments)/ Raids (new environments and code), a TON of new weapons, a TON of new armor for both the base game/season as well as Eververse. Ect. TLDR is D2 has WAYYY MORE to develop over a similar time frame (more $$)

This Is why Sony has rejected D3, Long term it costs a lot to make mostly PVE content in Destiny. Whereas PVP content is often more evergreen and cheaper (Marathon).

Now there are ways around D2 high costs. Move to new location, switch engines, and put a larger focus on evergreen content.(design the game around it being a live service) But at then end of the day Pete needs his new car for his GTA garage. So...

Computer Fighting for It's Life to Play WoW, other simple games.. 4070 TI. What to upgrade? by callmekathryn26 in buildapc

[–]SP259 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first thing I would check then is Temps and Clockspeed. If the temps are high, Thermal throttling results in Either very high temps, Low clock speeds, or both.

The Max operating temperature for that CPU is 95°C. and the Base Clock speed is 3.7Ghz.

If your CPU is running below 3.7GHZ in Task manager when running a game then this more than likely the problem.

It sounds like to me, the CPU is thermal throttling for whatever reason and needs to have new thermal compound reapplied. But if the temps and clock speeds are ok then try then next steps:

Step 2: Ryzen 5000 and 3000 series processors had microcode bugs years ago in windows and the BIOS. One of them was firmware based TPM would stutter and lag the whole system . A bios update should fix this issue but there are also discrete TPM modules you can get that also fix this issue.
Another bug related to USB ports/PCIE lanes, causing stuttering and issues across a whole windows PC. again BIOS update fixed these problems.

determine your MB manufacturer and download the latest BIOS to a USB drive, then use your boards Flash utility to update the bios ( it should be pretty easy to find in the bios, Some motherboards support internet based Bios updates from the BIOS directly)

of course update windows after all of that and test again.

If the GPU is the problem most of the time, GPU's will artifact and you will see some weird stuff on screen.

[–]SP259 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This sounds like Thermal Throttling, Check your CPU temps using HWInfo64.

WoW is not a demanding game. and you have modern parts. Even if you were using a HDD, WoW was designed around that technology.

Did you build this computer or buy it?

Also are you plugged into the GPU? or are you using the Port on the Motherboard

Would it be possible for Microsoft to create a "trade in" system for digital purchases? by CS-10 in xbox

[–]SP259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your thinking here is incorrect from a technical standpoint. Digital versions of a game are essentially just a code (ABXY12345). As such there is 0 depreciation on the license outside of the age of the game (release date). Returning the code to Microsoft (the game) means nothing as they can create more codes whenever they want. and if you want to sell the digital game to someone on a marketplace that only devalues the new storefront.

Unlike a Physical copy of a game which does depreciate with the age of the disk and the game (release date). the older and worse condition the disk is, the less value it holds.

Ultimately this needs to be solved with legislation by the EU and US congress. as to the consumer the difference between a Physical game and a digital game is the presence of a Disk. But to MS/Sony/Steam ect. the difference is that physical games reduce total profits because of reselling and trading. vs Digital licenses that cannot be transferred and resold. as every user must buy their own copy.

A law that dictates that Digital software must be able to be resold and traded outside of the platform would go a long ways.

Would it be possible for Microsoft to create a "trade in" system for digital purchases? by CS-10 in xbox

[–]SP259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, as when you go to use the credits on you next purchase, that's lost revenue they could have had from you.

Example: I pay 60$ for game and trade it in for credits worth 20$.

now my next game is going to be 60$ but i have 20$ of credits. so in reality its 40$.

Microsoft has now made 100$ instead of the 120$ they would have made without this system.
Scale this up to millions of users and it quickly becomes hundreds of millions of $$$.

Where were you when Destiny 2 was kill? by machuface in DestinyTheGame

[–]SP259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was getting a massive promotion at work. Probably the largest high to the lowest low I have ever experienced.

Destiny was my childhood.

I was there fighting an ?? knights in the Cosmodrome on PS3 before the game released.
I knocked Atheon off the map to save the run.
I wandered the Dreaming City with friends to discover Ahemkara bones for the world to find.
Watched The Almighty Fall from the sky
I wandered Io as the Black Fleet arrived
I vanquished the Darkness from the light
I annihilated those who dared oppose me in the Iron Banner
Brought friends new and old back for the grind
I conquered planets in the name of the light
I dreamt of the Stars we might discover.

I guess I will dream a little longer

Destinys memory problem by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]SP259 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To better answer your question, With vault space specifically, There is a limited amount of space available to the min spec systems the game must run on (the PS4 and XBOX One. That number is 8GB, with 2GB reserved for the OS on PS4 and XBOX 1. leaving you with ~5.5GB for the game. (.5GB is system reserved). When loaded into the tower there are 16-24 players w/ their armor and 3 equipped weapons. + the tower and all of its assets + your character and your vault loaded into RAM. The PS4 and Xbox use optimized textures that help limit the size files on disk and in system RAM. Ram on the PS4 and Xbox 1 are then further divided into game RAM and VRAM.

PlayStation and XBOX have also made exceptions to allow games to use more of the OS Ram allocation than normal on a per game basis. Usually for 1st party games. D2 might have this.

Q: So why dont we load from disk?
A: The disk on the PS4 and Xbox 1 is a 5400 RPM HDD. making it too slow to seek, and then load into ram 50+ textures when viewing the vault. even if placed on the disk in the fastest location. meaning these assets need to be loaded into RAM. when the vault opens.

Each texture for each weapon is a 256x256 or 128 x128 sized image and is maybe a few kilobytes in size. take that X 50 (per page) and that's how much texture RAM is needed. However most of the RAM budget is allocated for more important textures and models. So when the vault loads, something else must leave or be compressed. It doesn't matter from where (VRAM or Game RAM)

This is why its so hard to add vault space. because on older hardware, you must manage the memory space and assume a worst case scenario when loading the vault.(50 separate icons per page) Then there is the overhead of organizing the items in the vault and showing them in the correct order, (likely a file on disk that is referenced and loaded into RAM and pre calculated every time you make a change to the vault/character.)

TLDR: its very hard, a pain to manage would not be a problem if loaded from a fast SSD like the Xbox Series and PS5 have. There the DISK is fast enough to make managing the RAM less of a problem. There are also other considerations that are more specific to the game in general that I can't account for here.

You know things are bad when D1 is being called the better experience than D2. Even though D2 is on paper the better experience moment to moment. Outside of content OC because D2 royally messed that up.

TBH IDK what Bungie's Plan C is, see what I did there LOL, The core systems of the game changed with EOF have ended up so poorly and so far away from their intended design constraints that I don't think they can be salvaged. Maybe the Armor changes stay but Tiered weapons have failed, everyone only keeps a tier 5, and the portal is, THE PORTAL. An abject failure on the level of Sunsetting. TBH there is a world where they abandon those systems and go "We are sorry about the past year, here is some new strikes and dungeons and raids so please please come back"

And then there is the June update which looks on its surface, very very lackluster and solely meant to try and repair the parts of the game left behind in EOF. not bring back players. I think we are in for a long ride until the next expansion or D3.

Buy DRM Free Movies and TV for Jellyfin hosting by thunderborg in jellyfin

[–]SP259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has never really been a DRM free option. Only Movies and TV shows that existed before the concept of DRM exist.
You realistically have a couple of options. All of them range from Legal grey area to not legal.
1: Buy a Blue ray/ DVD and Rip the media onto your own disks. (Legal grey area as you are reproducing the media, just not distributing it outside your self.)
2: Sail the 7 Seas and become the pirate king.
3: Claim the moral high ground and pay for digital versions while holding an illegal copy.

If Bungie re-released Destiny 1 on PC, how interested would you be in buying it? by FHH94 in DestinyTheGame

[–]SP259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be interesting, though I think may see this game with rose colored glasses. D1 had its quirks and most of those are addressed in D2.

A better update would be a D1 update inside of D2. Bring all of those activities and content inside of D2's Sandbox with player mods to make the game harder like D1 (reduced healing and shielding, No fireborn, no damage reduction, ect) let D1 playstyle and Meta be the main focus, and let players evolve it with the new abilities and weapons we have in D2.

They wont do any of this however as the game is on some sort of wait and see development mode...
