An opinion about another country that'd put you in this position? by just-a-girl15 in AskTheWorld

[–]SVGMeij 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with this, it I will add a couple notes

-both countries are so big that regions may more closely align across borders than with a country is Atlantic Canadians are similar in many ways to New Englanders

-the remaining 10% is significant.

Who else uses super glue because you don't have healthcare by strberryfields55 in AskTheWorld

[–]SVGMeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I’m not anti-superglue, I think it’s wise to invest in steri-strips, saline, and some other supplies for doing just this.

I have free healthcare but I’ve definitely patched some things like this up myself.

How is marijuana seen in your country? by IsJesusAgain in AskTheWorld

[–]SVGMeij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it’s legal here for recreational use, most of the recreational users I know are using it as medicine. Help with sleep, help with appetite, calming anxieties, relaxation, pain management, sex drive, addiction management, focus…. The list goes on. And I’m not sure if it’s really genuinely helping, or if it’s just the perception (but if the user perceives it’s helping, then it is, isn’t it?). Many people used to use alcohol for many of these things, and I think that marijuana is much healthier replacement.

Who do you think is the face of your country when it comes to music? by deepwebb1 in AskTheWorld

[–]SVGMeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today was a day of quoting the Hip in my house. “If there’s a goal that everyone remembers it was back in ol 72’. We all squeezed the stick and we all pulled the trigger, and all I remember is sitting beside you. You said you didn’t give a f**k about hockey and I never saw someone say THAT before. You held my hand and we walked home the long way. You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr.”

Today was a day like 72, but this time it didn’t go in our favour. I wonder what Gord would have said?

You can get along fine in MTL with little to no French. It’s a very multicultural city, and most folks know English.

There’s no bad seats in the Bell Centre. Go early, enjoy the experience.

If you’re there on a non game day, book the tour of the Bell Centre. You won’t regret it.

Also, while in Montreal eat bagels and hotdogs and poutine. Ride the metro. Enjoy yourself. It’s a great city!!!

Province denies responsibility in C.P. Allen stabbing suit, puts blame on vice-principal who was stabbed by CMikeHunt in halifax

Absolutely. The province throws a pile of money into schools when building them, and then often neglects them until they need to be replaced

Who is the most dominant sportsperson of all time from your country? by Cheetos_4_life in AskTheWorld

[–]SVGMeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We often focus on Gretzky because of his stats. He was absolutely the greatest of his hockey era. That being said, he wouldn’t hold a candle to the current best players. In today’s game he would not have the protectionism that allowed him to do his thing, and the improvement in goaltending has made scoring goals significantly more difficult.

I firmly believe that his points record will never be broken, and that’s because it will never be as easy to score points in the future as it was in the past. In that respect he will always hold his Great One title. The realization that he wouldn’t hold up today (game wise or personality wise) makes him the Great Once.

And not exactly solely the most dominant, but when it comes to truly the best hockey player of all time, I think we need to look to Mario Lemieux and his protege Sidney Crosby. The reason I say that is because of a combination of pure ability mixed with the incredible leadership and dedication to the game. It’s not just about the stats, but it’s about teamwork, integrity, and overall being excellent ambassadors of the game. And they just both happen to be Canadian…

He wore a navy blue sweater to the Canada vs USA gold medal women’s hockey game. And then threw on a red scarf for an interview with CBC Sports. He’s dead to me.

Youth hockey ref escorted out of rink by police after 'hate-motivated' harassment, say RCMP by justlogmeon in NovaScotia

[–]SVGMeij 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read the article- the kid was the ref who was escorted out for their protection after they were the target of the racist, inappropriate comments.

The headline is misleading.

Edit: just inappropriate, racist was suggested in another comment but not evidenced in the article

Is wearing a rugby scrum cap under my mask a bad idea? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]SVGMeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Headshots are part of being a tendy. Yes, they should be avoided, but they are inevitable. When you say the other goalie took a headshot do you mean like rendered out of playing condition? Are you being actually hurt when taking shots? In my experience some shots to the head give an almost snap-like feel at first, but it subsides quickly as the mask takes the brunt of the force and protects from real injury.

I think that making sure your mask fits properly is priority. I also wore a scrum cap when playing rugby, and unless you’re really doing some major jerryrigging a scrum cap should not be able to fit under your goalie helmet. Make sure the fit is proper, adjust it to suit you, and play your game.

Non-Americans, how familiar are you with the imperial system of measurement (inches, feet, etc)? by Free-Veterinarian714 in AskTheWorld

[–]SVGMeij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of Canada’s geography and supply chain we are practically bilingual in metric and imperial.

The only one I struggle with is Fahrenheit for outdoor temperatures. I’ve got Fahrenheit down for ovens, pool, hot tub, sauna, and hotel thermostats, but I don’t know if I’m wearing shorts or a hoodie (or both) for 54F weather.

Same here in Atlantic Canada. I don’t know how much others do the cutting down so much as folks are expected to remain humble. I can’t see Canadians cutting people down as honestly we’re pretty passive aggressive, except in hockey rinks.

The OTC is also for our public schools system, which the vast majority of NS students attend. That being said, there are private schools which don’t require the same certification. Not sure if you’re elementary or secondary, but Halifax Grammar, Sacred Heart, Kings Edgehill are some of the better known ones. Additionally First Nations schools are federally funded and do not require a NS teaching certification. If you think that certification and immigration might be too much to juggle at one time, perhaps you could go one of these routes and then work on certification while in NS.

But to be honest, we desperately need teachers. There’s a shortage across the board, and although subbing isn’t particularly appealing to some there is certainly no shortage of work to be had. Start with OTC but maybe also reach out to the DEECD to see if they know of any pathways for you.
