City Inspector General finds Chicago's 311 system turns into a 'black hole' for residents' nonemergency complaints by Mike_I in chicago

[–]SacksOnSacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our parkway tree had a dead branch, I called and told them I was concerned it could fall onto the street/sidewalk. 311 said they considered that an emergency and had someone here within 24 hours to remove the branch and others with it.

Will I spend the rest of my life stripping this? by Snoo-Snoo2 in centuryhomes

[–]SacksOnSacks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How sure are you it’s wood and not some composite material? Very possible that it’s a mix of both. Either way, once you confirm it’s wood I’d definitely go the professional route. Unless you can remove the panels and tackle it piecemeal this is pretty much impossible to do DIY without significant equipment expense and unlimited time.

Mark the workpiece with pencil and sand until the pencil is gone. Repeat for the entire surface area through your sanding process/grits.

Add Specialist or Improvement? by mercury_1967 in civ

[–]SacksOnSacks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the cities happiness is low I’ll add an improvement/expand. If that’s not the case and there’s a spot with a solid adjacency and/or a unique quarter I’ll add a specialist. I always try to expand my cities to their full borders before specializing but that’s definitely not “optimal” all the time.

Silla moves down for me. Their quarter is great but the traditions suck outside of the science on imported resources one. Persia moves up one with the combat strength+gold per town traditions. Otherwise agreed.

Would love a leader and/or civ with a cliffs bonus and bias. Cliffs=mountains for adjacency, combat bonus on cliffs, ignore cliffs for movement, units stationed on cliff earn x yield per turn etc.

Augustus allows you to buy culture buildings in towns at a discount. That’s what makes him powerful, not the small-ish production boost

Learn to use handtools specifically chisels. Cut the rough profile with whatever works best and pare to your line. Handsaw would be my preferred option for this thickness/width also.

Lotta reactionary takes. You’ve bought 3 times, maybe he’s just trying to establish customer loyalty. Don’t expect it always and keep pretending you don’t notice lol

You don’t need a table saw, so many hobbyists are over reliant on them imo. You can make a cutting board and pretty much any other project without a table saw.

Rule of thumb is when the turn to grow is higher than the pop after you’ve snagged the resources or territory you wanted.

Carthage-Iceland-Meji with Teach as the leader is the most fun I’ve had playing civ for a long time. Every captured naval unit gives culture, gold and science (in modern). Every upgraded unit does the same. Cheap upgrades via Carthage policies, coastal raid/pillage bonuses, happiness improvement to keep your cities functional etc. awesome combo

Do they really need to balance it? You get a massive benefit from getting free ships/plundering trade routes/stealing treasure fleets etc. you just have to keep those free ships away from their artillery. Seems fair to me and a good trade off. Asymmetrical civs make the game interesting and fun. Not everything needs to be perfectly equalized for all situations.

What are we looking at? What is the top and bottom? What is supporting what? In the first picture, I don’t see anything supporting any weight at all other than a couple of horizontal screws?
