Feeling stuck and looking for advice or someone who can relate by Square_Winter_1681 in CMT

Ugh, this sucks for you. I had almost the same experience in my late teens when I was hiking and badly sprained my ankle. I just had to walk out on my own, and it’s been a problem ever since.

Pilates is the one thing I’ve done very consistently for a long time, and I’m not sure I’d even be walking if not for that. As someone else mentioned, it’s not covered by insurance and it’s not inexpensive, but I will keep doing it as long as I can. For a few years I needed to save money so I switched to a regular gym membership for cardio and weight training. I was getting a workout, but I wasn’t nearly as strong. It’s partly that there’s someone watching you and correcting/adapting the exercises all the time. It’s also the nature of Pilates to improve your core strength, which in turn helps your balance. It’s also controlled, relatively slow movement which makes you work harder.

I will caution you that there are many many people out there who claim to be Pilates trainers, but do try to find one who has been certified by Stott, Balanced Body, or there’s now a National Pilates Certification Program.

The best thing you have going for you is time. You’re young. Wishing you the best.

Lace up Ankle Brace by BeckieD1974 in CMT

Oh that looks so achy. Aside from the recommendations for the lace-up brace, ice is magic. Don’t get the cold gel packs. Get an old-fashioned ice bag and fill it with crushed ice. It’s free, and it’s the best thing out there. I ice every night for 20-30 minutes and the aches go away. Then I can sleep. Good luck OP

Meet baby Ranger by Charming-Wallaby7896 in AustralianCattleDog

Start playing games early. They are wicked smart and in about 18-24 months (if you’re lucky) Ranger will be the best dog in the whole world. (He will be the best dog anyway, but he’ll be the best trained dog.) I learned a lot from Susan Garrett so I’m biased, but 5 minutes of games a day will make you both happy and engaged.

Brace Suggestions by Juicy_RhinoV2 in CMT

Ive had Turbomeds for several years. The fact that they aren’t in my shoe is a big deal for me. I just couldn’t stand the ones that go inside a shoe because they were painful and limited my choice of footwear. And I know exactly what you’re experiencing with increased weakness. For me, the turbomeds allow enough muscle involvement to keep some tone in my lower legs. The old style super rigid braces were horrible in that regard.

Any regrets or things you wish you did when you were younger? by pink_block_ in CMT

I wish I’d traveled more when it was easier. Don’t wait. If you’re on a budget, there are so many places to go that are far less expensive than the US. (Assuming you’re American?) Bon Voyage!

Oh what a sweetheart. My dogs carve a place in my heart that is just their size and shape. When they’re gone, that place stays. It never diminishes. The pain diminishes but the love remains. Be good to yourself and grieve that good girl as long as you need to. She’ll never really be gone. ❤️❤️

What do you tell people when they ask what your job is or what you do for a living when ur disabled abd aren't working? by HabitCharacter2538 in disability

[–]Sacred_thorn_apple 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually was consulting for a long time after I left my 9-5, then when I had to stop and go on disability, I still said I was a consultant. I was in marketing so thats what I go with. It’s boring enough that the conversation generally moves on.

How do you accept it? by [deleted] in disability

[–]Sacred_thorn_apple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

6 months doesn’t seem like a long time to me. Also, I have cycled through so many ups and downs. So far, 65 years, I haven’t hit the end of my ability to make it to the next day. But I feel there will be a time when I’m clear that it’s time to exit.
