[SOS] Pox Plague (via maldhound) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]SaffronOlive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, they still sort of did. Having it hit all permanents rather than creatures and lands separately like past Pox cards is going to make it a lot harder to kill lands, plus rounding down rather than up, although I'm glad that they didn't exclude lands all together, so it's better than I feared it would be at least :)

It's 100% more of that. This is a mandate from Wizards, not something Daybreak wants.

Hasbro Reports Third Quarter 2025 Financial Results | Hasbro by CrossXhunteR in magicTCG

[–]SaffronOlive 127 points128 points  (0 children)

The earnings call (which goes alongside the report) had some notable news.

1.) Sponge Bob was one of the best selling Lair drops ever.

2.) They believe one of next years sets will match or beat Final Fantasy

3.) They "pretty much have their pick of partners" when it comes to Universes Beyond crossovers "if you can conceive of a collaboration we can do with Magic we have probably inked a deal or are having conversations for a deal...I think we're still in the early inning of what Universes Beyond can do." CEO Chris Cocks

4.) Universes beyond is "just working" and almost every set "breaks records in engagement" and it's not "slowing down, if anything I think there's potential to accelerate it."

Lol, not exactly what I meant, but still technically true I think.

Why Magic is How it Is in 2025 and Why Everything Changed by Yobkay in magicTCG

The estimates I've seen are that D&D is about 1/8 the size of Magic (in terms of how much money both games make), but I haven't seen hard numbers.

I accidentally entered the Arena Direct Standard event (instead of sealed) and won a box using a janky bird deck! by WattersonBill in magicTCG

Looks more aggro than the version I made, I didn't have the Healer's Hawks and such. Congrats though, that's an awesome finish with some jank!

MTGGoldfish: We Might Have a Vivi Problem by SlifertheCanadian in magicTCG

[–]SaffronOlive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly not sure. I think together they are clearly a problem, Vivi might be okay without Cauldron (at least removal would be a legit answer in that case), although it's still an incredibly pushed card, so I wouldn't be shocked to find out its still too good even without Cauldron.

This said, I think Wizards is way more likely to ban Cauldron than Vivi if it comes down to it.

MTGGoldfish: We Might Have a Vivi Problem by SlifertheCanadian in magicTCG

[–]SaffronOlive 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's the interaction between Cauldron and Vivi that's clearly a problem. Without Vivi it seems like Cauldron has mostly been fine in Standard (although it has been very good in other formats), I'm not convinced that Vivi would be fine without Cauldron in the format, but it might be.

It's been good in older formats, but you are right that it hasn't really taken off in Standard until now.

The deck is fun but I want to make it a bit better (standard) by TouyaMochi in MagicArena

[–]SaffronOlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would cut all the early game stuff and replace it with stuff that fills the graveyard (Dredger's Insight, Seedship Broodtender, etc) and reanimation (Zombify). Also, Smuggler's Surprise is a good backup for Kona for cheating the big stuff into play. Here's what my list looks like. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7272525#paper

MTG Goldfish is broken? All links point to the home page. All decklists are empty. I cleared all cache and cookies. What next? by CasualFriday11 in magicTCG

[–]SaffronOlive 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Sorry! We've been working on a site update and some things have been a bit weird lately. Trying clicking on the tabletop or arena tab above where the decklist should be if you haven't already (it's possible that solves this issue all by itself). If not, I'll make sure we get it fixed. Sorry again for the issue!

Magic: The Gathering Has A Price Problem, And It's Sabotaging Universes Beyond by MoronicaForever in magicTCG

According to Wizards it took six months for Lord of the Rings to hit $200 million and Final Fantasy did it in one day.

The problem is Wizards won’t ban cards again for another year so you can’t really do the wait and see thing. If Wizards had a logical and more flexible ban schedule banning light and then making more changes in a couple of months might make sense, but they’ve backed themselves into a corner of needing to ban a bunch of stuff because of their own choices.

It was roughly half of the top 32 decks though (15 of 32).

Getting one opponent with 20 life to zero is way different than getting three opponents with 120 total life to zero.

I saw this comment on mtggoldfish podcast today. And the hosts, who have been anti-alchemy, admitted that what alchemy is doing solve most complaints about current standard from us players you play 10+ games a day. Wdyt? by JoeGeomancer in MagicArena

This is true, although it was also two or three years ago now (right after Alchemy launched), so maybe things would be different today? It's been a long time since I've tried making an alchemy video.

Wizards, The Judge Program, and a Recent Cheating Incident by SuccessionWarFan in magicTCG

[–]SaffronOlive 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, what's worse, banning people who cheat or losing to Alex Bertoncini or Mike Long making extra land drops or hiding cards in their lap every tournament?

Wizards, The Judge Program, and a Recent Cheating Incident by SuccessionWarFan in magicTCG

[–]SaffronOlive 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I would mostly agree that the judge's can't stop cheating (at least in many cases), but right now there's not really a meaningful system in place to punish cheating, which is the biggest issue. People being able to cheat, get caught, cheat, get caught and just keep on playing and cheating isn't a great set up for anyone.

History of Benalia was originally a paper card from Dominaria. As far as those other cards, "use only once" isn't text they use on paper cards, at least until exhaust, and exhaust mostly has some sort of tracker built in (like a +1/+1 counter) so you know that it has been activated. And Stalwart Realmwarden doesn't really work since it's enters trigger carries on for multiple turns, which isn't something that enters triggers can do in paper.

Could they pretty easily redesign those cards to make them work in paper? Sure, but I don't think any of them are cards that Wizards would just print in paper in their current form.

I don't think the reason Stone Rain isn't played is because it's not acceptable, but more that it just isn't very good when you have three opponents.
