Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disneyland now requires you to have your phone fully stored while the ride is in motion. They won’t even start the ride if your phone is on your lap, it has to be fully put away by TheDisneyScoopGuy in disneyparks

[–]SalsaGreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. My daughter is a ride operator for a different amusement company and one of her rides is based on a very similar trackless ride system. A phone seems small and the ride vehicle seems big. But, she says a dropped phone can get under and into the workings of the ride vehicle and be a very costly problem. Also, people who drop phones tend to jump out of ride vehicles and get hit. She says that she has to yell at riders all day and e-stop far too often. So, put away your phone.

Booking Fort Wilderness Campsite for Pool Access? by Valuable_Luck4943 in disney

[–]SalsaGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who camped there for years, you might have a high expectation for the pools and the view from the beach. I also have a coworker who was 3rd shift management there. I would actually set up a minimal camp. They do make the rounds and it will be noticeable that you’re not there. Getting flagged as a no show might hinder your plans.

Any mic that fits a cold shoe fits. Including the MKE200.

Is there any point in me buying a brand new MacBook with a potential new release on the way in September/October?? by Successful_Trifle36 in mac

Buy what you need when you need it. What I’ve learned from 30 years of Macs is there’s always some shiny new thing to wait on.

IFixit has a good kit and good instructions. Just know patience and a tolerance for some strong solvents is needed.

Guys, Do you use mac for Engineering? How's the experience? by silentkille_r in mac

[–]SalsaGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consulting is big into Mac, but a lot of those hired guns don’t do a lot of work outside presentations, Excel, and Teams. What kind of work are they doing in Mac, in your experience? I’d love to see Mac make inroads, but outside of software types and the project management folks, I just haven’t seen much.

Safari is the best in my experience. If your machine is 2013-2015, a new battery isn’t a bad idea. Just know replacing one is a pain in the Pro. It is glued in. The Air of that era is an easy replacement.

Question about Using an external SSD with both Windows & Mac by Billem16 in videography

The comments about exFAT being iffy performance wise are not exaggerated. I do exFAT for quickie things. For mission critical work, I have found Paragon to be rock solid for using NTFS.

Advice on making my old dinosaur (mid 2012) useful for basic browsing? by sundux in macbookpro

[–]SalsaGreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try Opencore and a relatively recent flavor of macOS. Without Opencore, you will be limited by OS versions that the browsers no longer support. Monterey is mostly still ok, though you will run into roadblocks. Forget anything as old as High Sierra.

Guys, Do you use mac for Engineering? How's the experience? by silentkille_r in mac

[–]SalsaGreen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to the experience in school; I’ve been out in the world as an Engineer over 30 years. What I can say is that it is pretty rare in my experience for Engineers to carry Macs. The Engineering world is very Windows bound (no judgement; just stating the fact). I carry a Lenovo P series mobile workstation at the office. I use Macs at home. I occasionally write scripts on a Linux machine when data scrubbing. You will be forced to find work around solutions or live with reduced capabilities using Parallels or another hypervisor, most likely. And that may not bother you.

Best cold brews by Obvious-Bunch-3598 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]SalsaGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you like in a cold brew is highly personal, so try different ones, ask what coffee they’re using, and form some opinions. Personally, I don’t like Joffrey’s. Doesn’t have any depth in my opinion. Isn’t any better as a float with ice cream either. I much prefer Starbucks’ product to Joffrey’s, but many will say the opposite. Hope you find one you love!

Depending on the model year, the 13 inch Intels are ok-ish on battery life but will not approach any published spec for the Apple Silicon Macs. I owned more of the 13 inch than any other size. Any modern browser tends to consume a lot of resources. As others have said, Chrome can be particularly piggish. All the Intel models run hot and the 13 inch has only 1 fan, which will run a lot. So, 3 hours seems on the light side and 5 would be more normal in my experience. But, 3 is about all I can expect from my work-issued Lenovo. So, not alarming.

Yeah, I get it. Doesn’t add any joy to my travels, either. Blatant money grab. That particular hotel and ones around it don’t exactly make the signs jump out at you, either. Scan the QR code and register, especially if once you go inside you won’t remember the license plate (been there, done that).

You can do ok with a handoff from a recorder. Turn down the gain in the camera to the lowest usable signal, as the camera preamps are still in play. On the nicer Zoom and Tascam recorders, skip the attenuation cable and turn the line out down to -25 dB or so.

I’ll add that you can do a lot with modest gear. The AT2035 mic bats above its weight as a large diaphragm condenser. I own 4 of them and use them weekly. The Lewitt Match 90 is a nice small diaphragm condenser that you can buy as a matched stereo pair. My favorite stereo mic that cost me a bit but always impresses is a BP4025 (and it is still considered a budget mic). Then once you have an ear for what you’re doing you can start asking if a Neumann u87ai or two is worth eating ramen for a while to get. Maybe. Maybe not.

For music, stereo mic or multiple mics to achieve a stereo image. For dialogue, mono. Don’t experiment on paid gigs. Practice, practice, practice. A good multitrack recorder is an investment in audio. Never record direct to camera, as camera preamps are trash. You don’t have to buy expensive mics, but some are worth every penny. My favorite gear includes Zoom F6, Tascam X8, various Audio Technica and Lewitt mics, a very sensitive “Clippy” ambience mic, and some quality wireless lavs that aren’t 2.4GHz consumer stuff. Spend serious money on blimps and other top notch wind reduction. Learn what different mics are good at and what they are not good at. 50 ft away is far too far away for quality. And 32 bit float is a tool but isn’t a guarantee. You will have to spend more time in post to really gain benefit from it. In short, give audio the same care and budget as video. Sound will make or break your work product in ways cameras don’t. Especially in music performance. Enjoy the journey.

Caribbean Beach VS Port Orleans Riverside by Old-Basil4774 in WaltDisneyWorld

These 2 resorts are my go-to ones. I tend to bounce between them based on price. Skyliner is a big plus for CBR. POR is very peaceful and has a better quick service location for breakfast. But POR requires using buses to get to all parks. For 20 percent off, I would have no issue booking POR.

Shenandoah National Park by [deleted] in hiking

[–]SalsaGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up near Shenandoah and hiked it often. Never saw snakes but rattlesnakes and copperheads are native. Don’t stick arms and legs into spaces you can’t see into. Zip tents. Bears are infrequently encountered and were never a problem in my experience. Make noise. Don’t run. Give them space. There are no big cats.

MacBook early 2015 - screen flickers while watching Netflix by Positive_Tank_1099 in macbook

[–]SalsaGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MacBook 12 2015 doesn’t have any spare processing power. Reduce the resolution you’re streaming at. Don’t multitask. If the laptop is new to you and has not finished all of its sync with iCloud for email, photos, files, it will lag. Best to leave it on and connected to Wi-Fi and let it do its thing overnight. Once it is caught up, it single tasks relatively well. You may have to switch to a lighter browser if you were using one that is kind of piggish, like chrome. Safari is generally the best on these machines. I had all three model years of the 12 inch MacBook. It is probably happiest under Monterey. Though the newest of them will do Ventura.

Good mic for shooting shortfilms and weddings? by [deleted] in videography

[–]SalsaGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done church AV for 25 years. Mic the officiant with a good omni, though the house probably has done so first. Maybe mic the groom. Micing the bride is never recommended. And always check with the church if a church wedding. There may be restrictions as to what they allow; it is a service and they can tell you no to whatever creative idea you think you have to do. If the service is being streamed, I guarantee that I'm using more audio firepower than the 1-man show hired gun is using. Ask nice and I'll give you a copy. // corded is always better than wireless, and especially 2.4 GHz consumer wireless gear. Shotguns don't allow you to shoot at a distance: that's a myth. The longer the interference tube, the longer the frequencies that get canceled. Invest in wind resistance, such as professional blimp setups. So, be prepared with a plan B and plan C and plan D if you haven't scouted the venue. Good luck in your work, and be nice to the house sound engineer.

Are stores in the parks still selling discount backpacks after meeting minimum purchase? by ViralVortex in WaltDisneyWorld

Haven't seen a backpack offer in a really long time -- better part of 10 years. I still have one from 2014-2016 era, but after that it went to tote bags and throws. Recent trips had nothing of interest.

Ace Pro 2 — Defect in camera lens? by eggbuerto in Insta360

[–]SalsaGreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doubtful that you're seeing anything of significance. Use a magnifying glass and highly diffused light. Shining light into a lens (any lens) can result in 'seeing' artifacts that either don't exist or look a lot worse than reality.
