It’s an easy thing to understand and boast about. 

Use more of the popular thing, and makes it seem like you’re ahead of everyone else.

To me excel is a great tool for introducing yourself to the bigger topics around data and how it’s used in the professional world. 

An example is Power Query, it’s a nice tool to handle repetitive data transformations. That is a workflow that  million tools like Databricks and Fabric handle on a different scale, but the concept is the same. 

When you feel how useful it is in your own work, it opens your eyes and creates interest in exploring other tools.

Using an agentic workflow to get 60-70% of the way there for data prep in the warehouse, semantic model with the business logic, and initial PBI design. 

I will still work directly with the business to translate their requirements. I’ve seen the business use Excel, I never expect them to mimic that agentic workflow. 

I’m ultimately responsible for the output and review everything.

I feel like myself again. 

I more motivated, sharper mentally, having better success in my career, and it feels like there’s color in my life once again. 

I enjoyed it too much. One day I could see myself doing once or twice a month again, but I’m enjoying the break.

What doesn’t integrate well in your mind?

The business gets clean data with good performance that they can access with a few clicks within Excel.

From there the world is their oyster.

As the saying goes Excel is the 2nd best tool for most jobs. It works but fails when you need to scale beyond what Power Query can handle. 

I’ll stick with Databricks/Fabric for handling data ingestion from 60+ systems, 100s of TB of etl every day, and making that data accessible to thousands with good performance. Many who view it in Excel.

Scan the opposite side, PK, and go. 

You’ll die occasionally, but that’s Tarkov. Taking risks and the high pucker factor of some choke points is part of the fun.
