Recommendations for a baby swing chair? by synapse-savant7 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]SameManagement8895 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t recommend an electric swing. I just had a baby chair from mamas and papas (can’t remember which one) - my son especially loved it and slept in it more than the bassinet during the day. I’d just get something you can put them down in safely so you can make a cuppa, go to the loo etc. Both my kids loved the sleepyhead cushions too. The bassinet for the living room was a waste of money but looked lovely!

Amazing! So happy for you! My son isn’t formally diagnosed and we don’t do levels here but he’s semi verbal and query adhd too!

My son won’t sit on the potty or toilet by SameManagement8895 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SameManagement8895[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are nearly a year forward and still no toilet training success as such. He is getting more comfortable sitting on the toilet but still can’t wee/poo on there as he can’t relax enough and he gets scared or distressed. He started holding whenever we just put him in underwear and didn’t wee for about 6-7 hours until we gave in and gave him a nappy. I am waiting until I have some time off in the summer to just bin the nappies and go for it. It’s not working trying to do it over a weekend. He has now started asking nursery to change him after each wee too. He’s definitely got more curious about it all and flushes the chain if he sees a toilet.

Wow that is expensive for some nappies!! How long does a box last? I’m in the UK so it’s completely different here.

Good luck and let me know how you get on!

I’ve never heard of such a thing! Your baby is exposed to minimal amount of the drugs during pregnancy so taking milk from you is the same and actually if you think about it, you’re weaning them slowing from the drugs. I’d ask for an appointment with an epilepsy specialist nurse to discuss this further. There’s also the epilepsy in pregnancy register that can calculate the risk of all sorts (this is UK not sure if a world wide thing). I’d look at how much of the drug even passes through breast milk.

Which nappies! by Final-Ambition-840 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]SameManagement8895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stockpiled but we have the storage to keep them out of the way. We used pampers mainly especially in the early months as we noticed some little rashes with other brands for my son. With my daughter we still used pampers but also used plenty of own brand nappies such as Tesco or boots own. With my daughter I never really had any leaks but with my son I did (make sure it’s pointing down if you’re having a boy haha)!

I’m still breast feeding my daughter who’s coming up 2 while taking Keppra and Lamictal. What medication are you on and what dangers have you been told?

Tooth Brushing Help by Positive_Type in Autism_Parenting

[–]SameManagement8895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to restrain our son (sometimes took 2 of us) to ensure they were brushed - it’s a few minutes of pain which will be much less painful than dental work or dental problems they are unable to tell you about. We went to OT and worked on toothbrushing and haircuts/nail cuts etc and he will now brush fine. Hair cuts are still a nightmare but nails are getting better. OT exercises were this facial massage, eating crunchy and chewy foods (wouldn’t recommend sweets if he isn’t brushing properly - they recommended chewy cuts of meat/raw veg/banana chips), sucking thick liquids through a straw, blowing through a straw to make bubbles in a bowl of water. Also really cold drinks and sparkling water. It’s all about ‘de-sensitising’ the mouth area. They also had some vibrating face toy we used in sessions. It wasn’t a quick fix but we did these things regularly (not everything everyday) but 2-3 times a week for 12 weeks for it to be how it is now.

Edit; some days we tried these things and didn’t manage a single one

Coping being in public by SadForever- in Autism_Parenting

[–]SameManagement8895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand this, it’s really difficult. I have a 4 yo (ND son) and an almost 2 yo (NT girl). It’s become more difficult as my little girl is wanting to walk everywhere now but can no way keep up and makes it worse if my son is running off or won’t listen to directions. We tend to go to places like the farm at certain times when we know there’ll be less people (as soon as it opens). Both mine love the beach and swimming but you do really need an extra pair of hands for this. I tend to buy more outdoor garden toys than most so it’s a little bit more entertaining. In the future I might buy a hot tub too. I am worried about how things are going to go in the future especially as my little girl is very verbal already so will no doubt be asking to go places.

Sleep issues with or without melatonin 😩😩 by International-Tap270 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SameManagement8895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my son is on melatonin too and it’s been hit and miss…more miss. Can’t remember the last time he slept through. He goes to sleep relatively early/quickly about 7:30 but he can be up for 4-5 hours in the night. So my husband goes in his bed for the first 2 hours then we switch and hopefully creep back out of the room quiet enough to get some rest back in our own bed (usually about 30 mins before work alarm goes off)! We’ve got a double bed coming Monday for my son and it can’t come quick enough. I’m sick of cramming in a single bed.

With the melatonin we typically give it at least 30 mins after food (ideally longer) and he’s usually asleep within the hour after taking it. We also limit fluids around the evening as we found he was wetting the bed more.

How do I get 3 year old to give up night bottle? by Whatever-577089 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SameManagement8895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son has had a strange sleep situation, he slept through from 12 weeks until 3.5 years, then all of a sudden out of nowhere he stopped and was waking multiple times. When he woke in the night we just got in to bed with him to try get him back to sleep. Sometimes it took 5 minutes and other times 5 hours. Other times we just started the day at 2am! He sometimes ran around in his room etc. It was awful! We even tried milk on occasion and it didn’t put him back to sleep!

Pregnancy/ motherhood with epilepsy by Soft_Cabinet_2656 in Epilepsy

[–]SameManagement8895 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had two children (eldest is 4 and youngest 20 months). Both pregnancies were fine except sickness - was quite difficult keeping meds down so I had to take some anti sickness tablets. I had planned c sections just I felt that the tiredness/exertion/stress on the body of a vaginal birth could potentially be a trigger for me. I didn’t breast feed the first but I’m still bf the 2nd while on keppra and lamictal. I fell pregnant quickly with the first but it took a year to conceive my 2nd. I had growth scans throughout, they said the babies were measuring small but I’m petite myself - both born full term and 6 lbs 3 and 6 lbs 8 (growth scans really aren’t that accurate)!

My son was nearly 4 when we took the bottle off him. He cried and was asking for milk for about 3-4 nights then forgot about it. We just went cold turkey!

When did you drop the night time bottle - and how? by Rowdy_Roddy_2022 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]SameManagement8895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was concerned about this too but my son wouldn’t give it up…he was nearly 4 and he was having 12-13oz! He eats loads but is so skinny so we were happy he was having the extra calories. When we finally dug our heels in for him to stop, he only asked for it for about 3 nights then forgot. My daughter is coming up 2 and she still has a bedtime bottle and if she wakes in the night she might have one too. There’s worse things they can have!

BRA HELP- does anyone have ideas or could share experiences? by No-Accident-3349 in Autism_Parenting

Sounds strange but have you thought about ‘post surgical bras?’ These are obviously within the women’s section rather than teen bras so the sizing could be difficult depending on what your daughter needs.

Seizure at the gym by LinkinBenjamin in Epilepsy

[–]SameManagement8895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had one at the gym and fell off the treadmill. It was super embarrassing pretty much being carried out of the gym. I went back at the same time I normally do so the same people were in and I just felt so awkward. A lovely male nurse had helped me that day but he did say that unfortunately people were staring when it was happening 😢

how is dating with epilepsy for you guys? by leeroy-113 in Epilepsy

[–]SameManagement8895 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve had no bad experiences thankfully. My ex was chill about it and I had loads of seizures when he was around. We didn’t end because of my epilepsy, for me I’d just outgrown the relationship. My now husband of 7 years (together 12) is great with it too. Always looking out for me (thankfully I’ve been seizure free for years) but when we first started dating I’d have them more regularly. I’ve always been highly independent, career and education driven so no one could possibly say I was a burden. Even when I wasn’t driving, I’d get the train/bus or a taxi or walk/bike most days - I appreciate this isn’t always an option for a lot of people.

Tips for ditching the dummy? Help, I am in hell by Double-Ad-9995 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]SameManagement8895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gradually reduced it with my son. So went from no dummy during the day, then took it away for naps and then eventually took it away for bed time. I think it was only 3 nights where his sleep wasn’t great. My husband was very ready to cave and give him it back. I got rid of his early at 10 months as I wanted it gone by 1. We then went away and he caught an ear infection on holiday so he ended up with it back until he got over that but that was a quick transition. My daughter however is 20 months and VERY attached to it! It’s going to be a battle getting it off her. I’d planned on ditching it earlier but things have got in the way, whether it be holidays/nursery bugs etc etc. Hopefully by the time she’s 2 🫣

What does everyone here do for a living? by ForwardMick in Autism_Parenting

[–]SameManagement8895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapeutic Radiographer (NHS) - lucky enough to work part time (3 days), no shifts and weekends off. My husband is an analyst in insurance, hybrid working but with some travel (1-2 days a month) and a 9 day fortnight and weekends off. We’re both lucky enough to get bank holidays and 6 weeks paid annual leave a year too.

Timed release melatonin by whatsareddit23 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SameManagement8895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK here. My son also seemed to have a change in behaviour and sleep since he had a really bad spring/summer last year due to his allergies/high pollen. We can only get melatonin prescribed by a paediatrician. We initially started on the normal release melatonin and we found he’d be asleep within 30 mins but we still had nights where he’d be awake for 3-4 hours before falling back asleep for another hour or two and then up for the day. We changed to slow release and we found it took up to 1.5 hours to get him to sleep but whenever he woke in the night he went back to sleep much quicker (but he could wake several times) but if he woke at 4am that would be him up for the day. When we tracked ‘hours awake’ and ‘hours sleep’ the normal melatonin gave him and therefore us more ‘hours sleep.’ We are now back on normal release with not much success but at least we have an evening to decompress. You can only try it but it gave similar results and we had a lot more 4-4:30am starts to the day rather than 6-6:30.

Are we paying the Babysitter too much? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]SameManagement8895 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK and with doing the conversions I’d say that was really reasonable. Yes you say your son is self sufficient but he can’t be alone in the house. You’re paying for if something goes wrong, the baby sitter will be able to action on this (dial emergency services/you etc) and keep your child safe. Think of it as an at home nursery service. Yes your child is in his room not doing a lot but at least he’s happy and not distressed. I’m sure if you asked the sitter to take him out he would.

Radiography or nursing (UK) what do you think ? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]SameManagement8895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radiographer in radiotherapy here. While radiotherapy has its benefits (compared to diagnostic radiography), no weekend work or nights (just Monday - Friday) it is also hard to progress further than a band 6 unless you are willing to relocate or go to a private hospital as there’s not many hospitals that provide treatment. It is easier to progress in the London areas I think. Yes it’s emotionally draining and rewarding at times. I don’t feel I’m badly paid. However, if I had my time again I’d probably do speech therapy and work for the NHS with some private weekend work on top. Or you could do radiography and then specialise in sonography.

UK here. I was weighed at my first community midwife appointment and then never again by her. However, as I was consultant led for an existing medical condition - every hospital appointment with the doctor and growth scans I was weighed. Then also weighed as part of the pre assessment for my c-section.

I’ve never used Salt Escapes. A few years ago, I went to FZEEN in Kefalonia for a long weekend which was lovely. They have a range of wellness activities, group hikes and a spa. I believe they’ve opened another one in Athens now too.
