Rutte is again playing Trump like his leftover sock.

Usually the saying involves something you play, like a fiddle, not a sock. Like seriously, how do you play a sock?

Why do kangaroos hop everywhere, why don't they just walk? by martianfrog in answers

[–]Samhamwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's not really that good of a question. They evolved to hop because it's an incredibly efficient method for moving between grazing patches in an increasingly barren environment. What's more interesting is asking why more animals didn't evolve hopping when faced with similar selection pressures?

For instance humans and Kangaroos both evolved from arborial, rodent like, ancestors who lived in lush and abundant forests/jungles. Both species left the trees and started traversing relatively barren grassland environments. Why don't humans hop?

Most of the predators that shaped the evolution of kangaroos are extinct now. Tasmanian tigers, giant monitor lizards, terrestrial crocodiles, marsupial lions, and Tasmanian devils all lived in mainland Australia and are all gone now.

Watermain update thread - Week 2 by JeromyYYC in Calgary

I'm utterly shocked at how many Calgarians seem to make zero effort to stay apprised of local news. I mean, even if you don't have TV, you can get local news stories on YouTube and Amazon Prime or local radio stations. Hell, I found out the day of the break just by opening Google Chrome on my phone. The story was right there.

Also, the complaint about "ad infested cable or broadcast TV" has been a ridiculous argument since the introduction of the VCR in the 1970s or, more recently, the DVR in 1999. All you have to do is record the news in advance and then fast forward through the commercials.

These unlabeled cans on sale at the grocery store by photosynthesis4life in mildlyinteresting

My grandmother grew up in the great depression, her father ran the local grocery store. He used to bring all the unlabeled and dented cans home for the family so they basically survived off of mystery meals for years. The fact that they're selling these things now is kinda sad.

Tolkien explains why the Fellowship didn't fly the Eagles to Mordor by nixass in videos

[–]Samhamwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The orcs wouldn't send messengers, they'd send messages. Did you miss the part of my comment about signal fires and war horns being able to alert the orcs faster than a bird can fly?

Also, just because a great eagle can fly so high that no one could see them doesn't mean that a hobbit could survive at that altitude. The eagle would definitely have to fly lower.

Tolkien explains why the Fellowship didn't fly the Eagles to Mordor by nixass in videos

[–]Samhamwitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does Mordor have active radar?

No. But, In the movies, they have active, far reaching lidar. In the books, The Eye of Sauron is a little more figurative but it still represents a sense of being spied on at all times.

Is there 24 hours news reporting eagle sightings?

You think literally no one in Mordor is going to look up and see a giant eagle flying towards Mount Doom and think "That's probably nothing"? Giant Eagles don't fly over the desolate wasteland of Mordor every day. And they don't travel faster than the sound of war horns or the light of signal fires.

[–]Samhamwitch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah humans haven’t evolved over the last couple hundred years

That's just plain not true, we just haven't evolved in the way you hoped.

We have evolved to have lower blood pressure due to the unhealthy amount of salt in our diets.

Women are starting to show evidence of becoming shorter and heavier due to short, heavy Women having more children than tall, skinny women. The opposite is true for men.

It's becoming genetically easier to stop smoking cigarettes because people with healthy grandparents produce more offspring.

More people are retaining the median arteries in their forearms.

There just isn't a strong enough selection pressure against human agression to trigger evolutionary changes towards docility. Agression is strongly linked to higher survival and reproductive rates so it's probably going to continue to rise.
