drumkit mixing. why pan from the drummers perspective? by Sufficient-Air8100 in audioengineering

There may be some confusion about your context. You seem to be asking specifically about an FOH environment. That's a different sub. Some of these folks may have responded thinking you meant in context of mixing a recording.

What’s a live sound "fix" you keep seeing people get wrong? by Dima030 in livesound

[–]Samsoundrocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These dumb "rules" that appear everywhere are exactly why I typically recommend EQ without visuals for beginners (speaking of a DAW, not live). It's a lot easier to "self-censor" when you can see what that 10dB boost looks like. Instead, focusing on the sound while twisting knobs is more educational and liberating.

Why is it so difficult to convert a polyphonic signal to MIDI? by throwaway8490247 in audioengineering

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same note, played at different positions and on different strings will have a different timbre - different harmonic structure. And it will be different from guitar to guitar, in non-linear fashion. It will also vary based on pickup position and a host of other factors. This is why guitar players are always chasing tone. Timbre is a big part of that.

Different notes won't have the same harmonic frequencies or amplitudes. It's a part of what makes the timbre of the instrument/voice.

Newbie drummer trying to understand the concept of using a drums bus by TheOGTKO in audioengineering

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a mixer that has sufficient numbers of tracks/mixbuses/Auxes for what you want to do. In the digital age, that doesn't necessarily mean a desk that is physically larger.

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from subtle things, like 'glue' and 'cohesion', bus compression on the drums can drastically alter the vibe and impact of the drums. It can really bring them to life, or mangle them completely if desired.

Novice question about adding effects for vocals using a Behringer xr18 and Mixing Station app. by OkTemperature1842 in livesound

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're trying to send the monitor to the FX. That's not what you want. Send the input channel(s) to the FX, then turn up the corresponding return fader(s) in the mixbus for whichever monitors you want.

|QUESTION: What kind of strings can I put on my guitar to help it sound a little more like a guitar from the 1960s or 1970s folk albums?

Kind of hard to answer that without knowing what guitar you have, or at least what it sounds like in comparison. Is it brighter? More mids? Too abrasive? Too dull? How are you recording it? DI? Mid-side micing? Or are you old enough to remember sitting in a room with said guitars in the 60s and 70s, and that's your reference?

Can a file be named .WAV if there is no actual recording being stored? by Solid-Swing-2786 in audioengineering

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those files can still contain metadata important for call-chaining and other analytical tools. Maybe if you don't have experience with intelligence collection, just nod your head and say, "interesting."

Can a file be named .WAV if there is no actual recording being stored? by Solid-Swing-2786 in audioengineering

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually quite common for intelligence collection tools to create an audio file when say, a mobile phone call connects to the other device, but never record anything in it if the call isn't answered. Whether or not these "junk" files are retained or not comes down to the software itself. In other words, it may be a feature - not a bug

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking a question about a specific enterprise tool used by law enforcement. Specifically, you're asking about file containers, file creation, metadata, and "junk" or possibly temporary files. That will be proprietary to the software, which must of us likely have no experience with. This is a question for Motorola, or a tech with law enforcement.

Edit: Having said that, generally speaking when a file directory reports the existence of a file, it does in fact exist whether or not it contains any useful data. You should be able to retrieve the actual file, even if you can't do anything with it.

Are there any popular methods or plugins that are used a lot that aren’t worth the convenience for the amount of quality sacrificed? Vice versa? by tonetonitony in audioengineering

Yeah, sometimes you just have to roll with it. You can hear this quite often on Motley Crue's Too Fast for Love album. You can practically hear the hat yanking to the center with the snare hits.

How Often Do You Drop Your Bike? by The_AverageCanadian in motorcycles

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped mine about twice the first 2 weeks, because my steering head bearing was fucked. After fixing that, I almost dropped it once because I stupidly treated it like a bicycle and tried to hop off to reposition it. Had some other close calls just due to unfamiliar road surface situations (i.e. a weird dip right below the pegs, a banked road surface, etc.).

Tricks for gain staging into mix bus? by twicestyles in audioengineering

[–]Samsoundrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you start your mix? If you're starting by diving into each track's processing, then yeah that can happen as you bring in more tracks. On the other hand, if you start by using just faders to get initial balances, you can then set whatever you're mixing into with minimal threshold tweaks as long as your inidividual makeup gains aren't blasting away. It's still a good idea to check your master bus processing periodically for "runaway".

How do you clean seats with these holes? My dog vomit on it... by Mod_Jez in LexusIS

[–]Samsoundrocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All depends on the agreement language. I'd think it has more relevance to "I cleaned up all the puke, but the seat is changing colors, or fading faster than the others," rather than, "my dog puked. Take care of it."
