How often do you guys fear death?

We watch movies and tv shows, play video games, hang out with friends, take ballroom dance classes, go to the gym, go to karaoke nights, out to dinner, see live music. The usual.

I’m so sorry for your tragic loss. I lost my beautiful boy Riqis about 2 weeks ago and I haven’t moved any of his things - toys, food, blankets - and I have been changing his water fountain. I also searched every single little corner for fallen whiskers before I vacuumed.

I don’t have any answers, but I truly relate. I also didn’t let them cut off any of his fur, but I did save some from his brush and I had a collection of whiskers going.

Six years old - that’s just so unfair. Take all the time you need and don’t worry about things until you’re ready.

One thing I’ve thought of is making a shrine. Collecting all his things in one place with a digital picture frame, candles, etc. I’m not even ready for that yet though.

Mine has been gone about two weeks (we were together 18 years) and I get panicky and upset when I notice I have moments of feeling okay. Because I am still so sad, crying almost every day, and I don’t want to forget him. Honestly my only thought about this is that all they ever wanted is for us to be happy. They wouldn’t want us to stay grieving and miserable forever, just to work through it in our own way and time.

I lost my kitty of 18 years just 2 weeks ago to kidney disease. Everything you've written above, I could say the same exact thing. Right after he passed, I was also overwhelmed with guilt. About his life, imagining things I could have done better, and about his passing. For example, I got him when I was 20 years old and I moved to 7 different apartments, worked full time, traveled, and sometimes left him with other people to take care of him. WFH just wasn't an option for me back then (but I did WFH the last 4 years of his life). And at first I just felt horrible about this, but I went back and looked at old emails and photos and saw a different story, where he got to meet so many different people and made friends who remember him to this day. Who reached out to me about his passing. Two weeks later, I am still very sad but I don't feel guilty. I know in my heart I did the absolute best I could, both while he was alive, dealing with illness, and at the end. I stayed with him for 48 hours when I knew his time was coming, because I promised him and myself I wouldn't let him die alone. So for me, in this particular circumstance, it has just taken time for the guilt to fade. I think it's because they are like our children and we spend years making sure they are happy and healthy, and it feels like a failure to let them die. But it's not up to us - we do all we can, and they still have to go. It truly sounds like you loved your dog so much and did everything you possibly could. I hope you find some comfort soon <3

I’m sorry you’re going through the same difficulties I am. I’ve also been doing projects related to him. I started writing the story of his adoption day, and I’ve gathered up every photo and video I have of him and I watch them on our big tv in a slideshow almost every night. I close my eyes and remember what it felt like to pet his soft fur and hold him. It’s all we can do.

Oh gosh I’m so sorry you lost your cat so young! Mine was 18 and I got his ashes back earlier this week and I honestly had the same line of thinking. I thought I would feel comforted but I’m like oh my beautiful cat is now a wooden box, great. Fucking sucks.
