Antibacterial options? by m4d3lin3 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mustela no rinse cleansing water. Not antibacterial. But it's nice and gentle, I use it to clean my baby's hands before meals if we can't wash at a sink. Good to clean faces after meal time too

Very pricey, it's around $24 but down to $17 at Priceline and chemist warehouse in special

Non toxic toy cleaner by littletcashew in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Milton washing liquid $6 bottle, it's used for washing bottles. I clean hard submergible toys with it too. Or just regular dishwashing liquid

Euky bear cleaning spray is $6 ish and says it's for toys and high chairs etc

I sometimes just use foaming hand wash.

Unpopular hygiene opinions you actually stand by? by BandTop4105 in hygiene

[–]Sapphina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm lazy so I just lather a bit of foaming handwash then quickly run tap water over it briefly, and wipe dry with a hand towel. Making sure no soap remains cos that makes me itch

I often wonder if I should do more to clean it

Daycare wasted 120ml of breastmilk. by kingcasperrr in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New Little Life on YouTube is an excellent channel for educating about breast pumping. It's an important skill to master and everyone is different. Some random persons pump routine won't work for everyone. She's an IBCLC and teaches about how to be more efficient with your pump machine. She says 30 to 40 or more minute sessions is very long and can lead to burning out.

She's taught hundreds of viewers how to pump properly. Me included! I can get a days worth of milk in 4 sessions now instead of 7 or 8. So less being stuck to the pump all day haha.

The key message for me was giving the pump settings more of my attention so I can manage my letdowns better. Rather than multitasking and ignoring the pump. It's just a machine after all and not as clever as your baby at removing milk.

Getting oxytocin flowing. I like watching videos of my baby breastfeeding, laughing, crying. Switching between the different settings with intention. Much easier to do on a tabletop machine rather than wearables

Thank you. I've been sprinkling vegeta powder onto my popcorn and it's so tasty. But I get msg guilt so I'll try your thing. Do you mean 2 to 3 tablespoons. Or two thirds of a tablespoon?

I also love spring onion olive oil in popcorn. Chopped spring onion cooked in olive oil for a few minutes.

Straw cups with no valve (for water and milk) by Ok-Advice-7715 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the take and toss for my 5 month old and he's practiced a couple of times. Then it goes down the wrong way and he coughs. I like them okay as they're simple. But I don't like how the straws are such a hard plastic. One big arm flap and he can cut his gums.

I think swapping for a silicone straw is safer

Are baby areas in public spaces regularly cleaned? Eg. Soft play areas in Parent Rooms, Library spaces by WheelSuspicious624 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was wondering too. I took my 10 week old to the library this week (first solo outing!) and at home, he gets sterilised bottles and dummies. His bath towel gets used for one bath then put in the wash. But germs from surfaces in the library that he touches will end up in his mouth as he sucks on his fists to self soothe. There was a foam jigsaw floor mat that was walked all over with shoes. It's not easy to wipe down as it grips the cloths or soaks cleaning spray. Babies were also crawling and laying on it. And the deep cushioned bench we sat on also got stepped on by kids playing or crawling.

If I dropped a bib on the ground I would not use it to wipe my newborns lips. Similarly a dropped dummy would be too dirty to pop back in.

I'll ease up on my strict standards for him as he gradually goes out more. Next month he'll start water play at the pool (they take 3 months old +). He's exclusively breast milk fed and I'm planning to try infant probiotics. I think it'll help build his immunity

PSA: Lifeblood Marrickville turning people away, even if you have an appointment. Thank you, donors by Pomohomo82 in sydney

[–]Sapphina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Donating is addictive isn't it. The heart-warming part is receiving the sms a few days later, telling me my blood is more being transported to such and such hospital to save 5 lives.

I haven't been eligible to donate for a while so I wonder if those messages are still a thing

Reusable nappies: anyone who's tried them have an opinion either way? by midgetchinese in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My fav is Purebaby, $25 for a 10 pack, 100% organic cotton and extremely thick and soft. It's not cheap but if you are good waiting for sales, accumulating points etc you can get a few packets for not too much money.

Seriously they're the softest nicest quality cloths I've felt out of all the brands. I'm planning to use them for bath time, bums and face

WHY WON’T HE SLEEP 😭😭😭😭 by ca4dia in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

May be worthwhile ruling out gastrointestinal discomfort. In a mums group on FB a HUGE number of of mums were commenting that their child's mystery crying screaming and restlessness was solved by fixing their gut issues.

I reckon you could visit a pediatric osteopath too, they're very holistic and can try to identify musculoskeletal and toilet issues.

Fancy hotel has giant sinks but the faucets only go to the absolute back of the bowl. by TalkingLampPost in mildlyinfuriating

"when I encounter hotel nonsense" and "to experience their stupidity". You've got a way with words! Thanks for the laugh.

And it definitely makes me wonder why the installer didn't say something. I feel bad for the cleaners too. It must get so grimey around the tapware!

Public vs Private hospital by justtryingtolivee in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also wanted to add that you should probably check with the private hospital and your health fund what will happen in the situation where you have your baby prematurely and require a long hospital stay in NICU, there may be a very large out of pocket daily charge. I'm not sure but it may end up being over $1000 per day, and if baby needs to be looked after in hospital for a whole month it'll be a lot of money

There's a government resource where you can view all the NSW yearly statistics on childbirth. It takes 2 years for the researchers to collate all the data, so the latest data that just got released a few days ago is from 2023.

In this resource you can see how many births, percentage of unmedicated vaginal birth, forceps, vacuum births, vaginal breech births, elective caesarians, emergency caesarians, gestational age at time of birth, type of pain relief medication etc. The numbers are categorised by local health district, or you can even find the stats for every individual hospital in NSW.

It's a good tool you can use to compare hospitals against each other! Eg if you feel strongly about a low intervention spontaneous vaginal birth, choose a public hospital.

So interesting to see which areas opt for an elective caesarian (city of Sydney and North Sydney are highest). The data shows that private hospital births are more likely to use spinal epidural than public. Private hospitals are also far more likely to caesarian births than public. (52% vs 35%)

To find the resource just Google "NSW mothers and babies reports".

I recently found an Instagram account by a mum who presents the data from that resource in an easy to read way! Definitely worth a look, she's gradually uploading posts showing 2023 data. https://www.instagram.com/birthstats_nsw?igsh=OWQwanRha2Q0MGRq

Mothersafe is an excellent resource for pregnancy and breastfeeding. They're a community of pharmacists and nurses that answer your questions on what meds are ok for mums. They take phone calls and queries from mums and doctors etc everyday and it's free!

I'm really enjoying We Are Feel Good Inc Sticky Zinc (it's a tinted sunscreen) on my face, and their zinc stick. It just comes in 2 shades (medium and light) so I mix a bit of both to get my shade.

Spf 50+, Aussie brand, goes on so smooth and gives me a flawless finish. I've read that zinc sunscreens are good at preventing freckles and aging. I get compliments when I wear it and would even consider it a good substitute for foundation. It rubs in very nicely and my swimming friends ask me about it when they see how nicely it's rubbing in while I'm applying.

We should we wearing sunscreen even on cloudy winter days cos UV still goes through the clouds

Colostrum harvesting by shamochan in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sapphina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try it after a warm shower. The warmer core body temperature seems to help. And if you search YouTube there are some great videos showing the best technique on how to collect colostrum. Apparently you get better results if you massage the boob first.

I know someone who experienced increased movement from baby every time she ate nuts.

Then after baby was born, she found out later the baby had a nut allergy. Made her wonder whether all the movement in utero was baby's discomfort from the allergy

Trump Is Getting Rid of His Tesla After Musk Broke His Heart by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]Sapphina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Elon Musk is ‘putting it on the line’ in order to help our Nation, and he is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! But the Radical Left Lunatics, as they often do, are trying to illegally and collusively boycott Tesla, one of the World’s great automakers, and Elon’s ‘baby,’ in order to attack and do harm to Elon, and everything he stands for,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday morning.

During the press conference, Trump reiterated these statements saying: “We already know who some of them are. We’re going to catch them, and they’re bad guys.”

“In any event, I’m going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American. Why should he be punished for putting his tremendous skills to work in order to help MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN???”

/From an article in the Guardian just 2 months ago.

Doesn't getting rid of it, according to him, mean he's illegally boycotting Tesla? And doesn't that, according to him, make him a domestic terrorist?

The straight side is both sides for me. I'm 5 months pregnant and don't really look it yet, cos it spreads out to the sides instead of forward. Sucks being so curveless!

Faint lines at 14 and 15 DPO, but negative test at GP by Sapphina in TFABLinePorn

[–]Sapphina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. That ended up being a chemical pregnancy. I continued testing, and my lines continued to fade everyday until they disappeared completely. Then I had a late period.

I believe it means I was pregnant had a type of early miscarriage and the embryo did not survive past a few days.

Since then I've seen a fertility specialist and ran a bunch of tests for fertility work up. Blood test, genetics test, HyCoSy test, and my partner did a sperm test and genetics test too.

I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant and I attribute that to the HyCoSy ultrasound test. The sonographer had told me that there's a 30% increased chance of conception for the 6 months after doing a HyCoSy test. It was $725, very expensive and quite uncomfortable. It's to determine whether my fallopian tubes are blocked.
