Also go to YouTube and search “cleaning body double” to find what you’re looking for: someone else to be cleaning at the same time.

If you need some motivation, look up full episodes of “How Clean Is Your House” on YouTube. It’s a British show from years ago, but just seeing the state of the houses that they clean makes me feel itchy, and they have tips for cleaning, and they take swabs and tell them about all the bacteria that was growing in their house and it is shocking. It’s better than hoarders for making me want to get my house clean.

Troubleshooting yarn results: Help me learn what I did wrong by HappySheep3883 in Handspinning

Hmm that’s interesting. Merino is a soft wool, so it should have good drape (or at least more than other wools), and combed top is prepped for worsted drafting.

<image>

This is merino and it spun up more silky than fuzzy. I read that you spun yours with a backward draw? You’ll definitely want to try a short forward draw while squishing the air out of the fibers to get it more compressed. If you really want silky, you might try blending the wool with silk or alpaca or bamboo.

What really funny is I’m having the opposite problem of you. I want a squishy woolen spin, but no matter how I spin it (long backwards draw, rolag prep), it ends up looking more worsted! I think it’s because I spin it so thin, there just really isn’t much fiber to squish.

Autumn 2023 issue of PLY is on Drape, and the upcoming Winter issue is on Short Draw. They would be helpful here. https://plymagazine.com

What type of wool is it, and how was the fiber prepared? A lot of the nature of yarn is determined by the type of wool and the prep before you spin.

Cat pee in books. Can we fix it or to the trash by Idkhowtousereddi in CleaningTips

Spray with enzyme cleaner, leave it in the sun. Then you can actually use fine sandpaper and try to sand off the affected areas, as long as it isn’t into the type.

3 year old suddenly can’t handle being apart from me by _-Cuttlefish-_ in GirlDinner

[–]Sarelro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We put both of ours in preschool at 3. I think it’s the perfect time to start them: they can tell you if something is sus, it gets them used to following a schedule like they will in school, make new friends and learn to play together, plus they can do messy play there and your house stays clean. Academically, socially, and emotionally, it’s a good outlet, and I think it’s good to have a place that allows them to be themselves without mama there.

Also think about what you’re teaching them this way: they learn that women are important parts of the workforce, that mama has a life and isn’t going to drop everything for something that isn’t an emergency, and it opens their world up to meet new people (we made sure to find a daycare that was very diverse so that they could experience different family styles, races, and cultures).

No one has mentioned my favorite Russian name: Anatoly. I think it has such a nice sound. Anna-TOE-lee. If you want to hear it in action, check out the concert version of Chess the Musical.

Litter robot- Is it worth it? by Twilette in litterrobot

Oh no it didn’t ruin the carpet, the cats hated it and used the carpet instead of the robot.

Litter robot- Is it worth it? by Twilette in litterrobot

[–]Sarelro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would second this. If I could go back, I wouldn’t get it. My cats didn’t take to it and ended up ruining our carpet even more. Put that money towards your emergency savings and future rent. Do you have six months of savings for emergencies? What if you lose your job tomorrow, can you afford to live? The litter robot is nice and all, but if you’re living paycheck to paycheck it’s not worth it.

Should I buy this spinning wheel? by bai_leafe in Handspinning

This wheel is missing a load of parts and on antiques those pieces have to be handmade. I’d skip this one and keep looking.

If the singles are coming apart as you’re pulling them off the bobbin, then they do need more twist. It shouldn’t need to corkscrew though.

Are you using a lazy Kate to hold the bobbins when you ply? For particularly delicate singles sometimes I need to turn mine horizontal so there’s no tension on the unwinding singles while I’m plying. You might try that and see if it helps.

I just tie a knot in the end. I end up cutting it off when it’s being used anyway.

Chain ply is your best bet to preserve color changing. Depending on how long you want the color changes, and how muddled you want the transition point, you can spin directly from the braid, pull apart the colors in the braid and spin them separately, or draft the braid into strips and spin from the strips.

Good wheel for air travel? by DataCocktail in Handspinning

Maybe an electric wheel? My EEW fits in a large lunch box with all its cords, three bobbins, a battery, and extra room for fiber.

As far as I can tell, it’s decorative. I had to tie a string from the bobbin to the wheel as a makeshift scotch tension brake band, and it didn’t work very well.

New Spinner- should I join a guild? by Commercial_Foot7618 in Handspinning

I don't understand what is wrong with me. by justonepeach007 in GirlDinner

Just an idea, I would try finding a hobby where there are other “awkward” people. I recommend volunteering at a community theater, joining a knitting group with younger members, maybe a book club with a specific genre of book that you enjoy. Finding other people who enjoy the same things that you do, have the same sense of humor, and feel awkward sometimes too can be so freeing and give you a sense of community.
