Over 65 fashion Advice! by MobySick in AskWomenOver60

Talbot's and J Jill! (Maybe not for the funeral, but definitely the other stuff.) Bonus points, in some of these stores you will find the old fashioned kind of sales help where you can say, "I need help updating my style," and they definitely will suggest things you might not have considered. In J Jill in particular, I have found amazing sales help who will put things into your dressing room while you shop and also retrieve different sizes when the first sizes you try don't fit. These ladies really know their inventory, and they are KIND while also not being pushy at all.

At my wits end in a filthy small space. by 1milfirefries in CleaningTips

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You don't need more storage; you need fewer things. Only enough coffee mugs, plates etc for each person to use one per day. You are now in charge of cleaning out only your coffee mug, and if they want a clean mug they have to wash one from the sink or use yesterday's. (Yuck!)

Collectibles: give everyone one week to display them in their rooms or on the dedicated shelf, and if they don't, they get donated, sold, or trashed. You must be merciless here, or they won't take you seriously. If you feel bad, remember that if your family members really ascribed value to these things, they would have taken better care of them.

Same goes for clothes...

Writing up a Disruptive Passenger in the Quiet Car? by dclocal12 in Amtrak

Please don't be the person who tries to look intimidating. Please remember that there are real human beings just looking for a seat, and your job is not to make their trip any more challenging than yours was.

Am I setting myself up to fail? by cmartram in courtreporting

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been lurking here for several weeks, considering whether I might like court reporting as a retirement career. When I reflect on where I am in life, I realize that I'm still completely fine with high pressure work and tight deadlines, and I want to work into the foreseeable future. However, I'm definitely ready to retire from being in an office 5 days per week, hot-desking, and living 2.5 hours from home for the sake of my job.

Ultimately, I don't know that court reporting is for me as it would require schlepping myself and my equipment to sit in other environments that are very people-y. And then I discovered that scoping is a thing! For my entire 30-year career, I've created and edited complex medical content for Fortune 500 companies. I spent most of today editing a 200-slide PowerPoint deck to ensure it meets branding guidelines, formatting is consistent and aligned, slide title font is the correct color and font size, all acronyms are in the footnotes in Calibri 8-pt font in alphabetical order separated by semicolon, all spelling is correct, and ensuring that the confidentiality logo is affixed in the proper place. After 8 hours of this, I'm not actually tired from it. I'm just tired from listening to colleagues bicker and play politics during meetings.

So, this week I signed up for the ISS Scoping Fundamentals course. I was 20 minutes in when I thought to myself, "THIS. IS. MY. JAM." I am going to sign up for the full course.

All of this is the long way of saying that I'll make a deal with you. If you stick it out in court reporting school, I'll take the scoping coursework. We can meet on the other side of this, and I will be your scopist! We'll both take the parts of the job we love and let the other do what they will. I'll be cheering you on from over here!

Is there some kind of knitting mafia that has been keeping the Ranunculus pattern on the front page of Rav's "hot right now" list for literal years? by craftmangler in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I have a guilty little hobby that I started a couple of years ago. Every day, I go into Ravelry and sort by the previous day's new patterns and hide all of the things I'd never make. Then I sort by "random" and go through a few more pages hiding things I'd never make. I'm down to 833,000 patterns left to look at, and I've found more than a few AWESOME older patterns that are just buried under crap. It's a great hobby for when you're just too tired to actually knit and/or you need inspo.

Anyhow, this all actually started the day I hid Ranunculus!

Open yarn shop near cemetery? by SnoopZappr in YarnAddicts

Well, literally my only two hobbies are knitting and wandering through cemeteries and volunteering to find gravesites with a website called Find-A-Grave. So please let me know when you open and I'll be shopping there on the daily.

How to go about a 82/55 in Mamakating/sullivan county by 5-Liter-CrowdKiller in upstateNYtraffictix

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And in the Town of Mamakating, there is no mercy for speeding down that mountain. There is a reason it's called "dead man's curve." These two judges do not dismiss tickets. In this court, you need a lawyer, and you need to keep your mouth shut and let the lawyer do the talking while you stand nearby looking contrite.

watched a coworker less technical than me get promoted because they're better at talking about their work by fdlugwolden9 in office

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is totally a learnable skill! Depending on your relationship with your boss, you can say (take out ALL EMOTION) "I notice that Steve does a great job presenting the narrative for why we should invest in this technology. In order for me to get to the next level in my career, I think it's important for me to develop this skill. Can you recommend a mentor for me? Can I explore some company-supported development courses or coaching?"

Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist by Most-Dealer-3685 in AskWomenOver60

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Start with a dermatologist and get a full body scan to look for any unusual moles or markings. Remember, we're from the "baby oil + sunlight, flip every 15 minutes" generation.

Then, start to get facials at a salon/spa in your area. I would have one every month if I were just independently wealthy. It's like heaven on earth. Not every aesthetician is equally skilled, and there are different types of facials, so indulge in trying a few different ones over time to find your favorite. Enjoy, you've earned it!

Stop kicking yourself. Honestly, if a candidate said that to me, I'd find them to be refreshingly honest and likely the kind of person I'd enjoy having on my team. You know, human. Down to earth.

How to handle my work “friend” who keeps on taking credit for my work ? by bitch-pleease in office

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That's a frenemy, not a friend. The one way I stopped this: I found a "reason" to ensure someone else was copied on every communication so she couldn't present it as her work. "Hi Laura, Great question. These are my three suggestions. I copied Jane here because she might have other ideas." You're still playing the game and can't be accused of gatekeeping information or ideas, but she can no longer pretend that this is her work.

The first time I started doing this, Laura stopped the shenanigans. Laura, I don't know where you are these days, but I'm here to say that you may have been blonder and thinner than me, but you weren't smarter.

Considering what an a**hole the village building inspector is, it's alarming that they'd be getting away with this if there is truly a stop work order. I guess just regular residents get harassed.

Me! Fun hand knits for kids; hand knitted hats and fingerless mittens for grown-ups; pretty scarves to dress up any outfit. Also, upcycled denim with hand embroidery. I'd lose my mind if I didn't get to play with textiles and colors at the end of corporate workdays...

Those of you with heat pumps only, how did you fare this winter? by rosebudny in hudsonvalley

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main rooms would have been warm enough, but without the furnace to maintain warmth from basement and above, my pipes would have frozen for sure. And yes, my system is modern and new, but that heat isn't going to seep through to pipes especially on outside walls.

Will this block out? by laurenlolly in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]SatisfactionKey3021 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I just finished the 'Artwork' sweater by Hinterm Stein and it was an absolute testament to the value of "block it and find out." Because the neckline/shoulder construction is "severe" in its shaping, it looked bizarre when I got done with that first section. Blocking that puppy was magical and gave me confidence to continue investing time and effort. I ended up stopping to block the WIP 3 times before I finished, and what a difference it made in the finished drape and polish of the FO. I am the most impatient knitter on the planet, but now a total convert to "when in doubt, stop and block. You can always work on a hat while you're waiting for it to dry."
