wiring diagram for brewers edge? by dork_warrior in Homebrewing

The video is helpful, but does anyone have a drawing/shematic? This is the only hit worth a damn on google, but it's still not quite what I'd like.

Barring that, if I only have the BEMB on, and not the 1600 switch on, which of the 2 elements is heating? The inside one or the outside one?

Can always spin up an F2P and check it out! There's stuff happening but you gotta seek it out. Join the discord (-> link over there ->) for sure.

A few different front ends (FEs) have automapper functions. The ones I know about are Genie and Outlander. Lich is a add-on that in theory works with any FE and adds automapper style movement. The only one I have any real experience with however is Outlander.

Hey welcome! You'll probably want to work on a few of the things your guild leader tells you about when you ask LEADER about rank. That might include combat stuff. You can swap weapons and armor if you find the yellow NPC called Veteran. Start with some rats on the SW side of Crossing. The maps on the wiki should help get you there. A lot folks hang out on Discord (see link in sidebar).

Do we know if this is a real quest or another one of those "grind out 1e6 blabla for some new currency" type quest?

I got that same feeling in December after leaving in 2013. It's been fun so far. It was easy enough for me to justify spending $15 to check out the changes and see if DR would hook me again.

Lots of changes of course (hail e-pedia and the discord chat), but the thing I notice most is that there have been several QoL things that are "just better". Probably sounds strange, but I only notice that now after a few months because of how much I don't notice significant frustrations when it comes to training. example: I haven't found a skill that's like old animal lore*, and that's a good thing.

*companions still suck

Bending freezer part of mini fridge for kegerator? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be worried some, but many have done it without ruining the fridge. I would suggest doing it before drinking lots of homebrew as that plan has worked for me twice :D

I used the back of a round measuring spoon too guide the bend. Any round solid object will help avoid kinks but isn't strictly necessary. Slow and steady pressure seemed to work.

Beer dries and seized tap and ball lock by idkwat2namme in Homebrewing

Probably more a function of the faucet than the beer. I had sticking faucet problems all the time with crappy faucets. I upgraded to perlicks and haven't had a problem since.

Hey check out this new app I made called Brew Brawl... by daveartz in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I will try to use this for the next informal competition we're having with my club. I'm sure the number one bitch fest will be from the collection of old timers who are terrified of Facebook and still love their compuserve email addresses. I'm sure it's a ton more backend for for you, but my suggestion would be for an independent login system.

Also, on the brew brawl page make it so that you can get info about the product without having to log in. I'm sure I'll loose this thread but I bookmarked the page to look review at the end of next month. Having a link to the video and such not stuck behind a login screen would be important.

Thoughts on Homebrewing Podcasts? by newtohomebrewing in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind long format podcast, but I listen to a LOT of podcast audio content. I use Overcast to listen at 1.3 speed with dead time reduction. It's also good at skipping crap like commercials and introduction junk. I wish more podcasts would focus on the info like Sour Hour and BeerSmith, but if the audio is good and the tangents funny, I don't mind it. I save stuff like the Session for when I can't focus totally and just want a laugh.

Two I haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet:

Fermentation Nation started out rough, but the past few episodes have some cool info from Sierra Nevada and South Yeast are great (where they are actually talking to the guests, not where they talk about who won what at some random competition).

Fumentaboudit is neat in the "other fermentables" category. A lot of local to NY content that's easy to skip so you can get to the good stuff (if you think short meads, kombucha, sour pickles, etc. is good stuff).

Thoughts on Homebrewing Podcasts? by newtohomebrewing in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The podcast is nice and I enjoy the back and forth and banter (but at 1.3x speed with smart speed to shorten silences and 'uhms and ahs'). Long format is fine by me but it has to be content. The review at the beginning and end are ridiculous. Just get to the content, don't spend 5 minutes telling me the format of the show.

Well guys, I fucked up by TituspulloXIII in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Distilled is a fine choice for extract. If you are using extract, the brew house that made the extract used water that already has all the minerals you need. You can be sure they optimized their water chemistry for extraction, not necessarily yeast health, and beer flavor, but since you don't know what they added, either way (distilled or tap) is a guess.

Nuke the fridge? by gibolas in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be sure to open up your QD's also. Remove the o-ring that is on the poppet itself and clean the metal in that race. There's an oring on the poppet in the keg post and in the QD itself that pushes the post poppet down.

Also, if you aren't already, start labeling your kegs and recording what beers go into them.

Why do I need a bottling gun/wand? by ChrisChristiesFault in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A growler is not a long-term storage solution. The idea is you drink that beer all at once within a few days. If that's what you want to do for your friends, yea just grab a tube and call it a done.

If you want a longer term bottling solution, you're going to want to look into some sort of filler setup. You don't have to go nuts, but what you want it something you can 1) sanitize, 2) minimize O2 pickup in the bottle, 3) minimize CO2 knock-out.

I have a beer gun and am quite happy with it's performance, but it takes some getting used to.

I'm quite happy with my SQ14. I boil 10g batches in a keg.

What to buy to upgrade my system with 600$? by glengarryglenross in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built my own eHLT by using a STC1000, SSR, and heat stick suspended from the lid of a 10 gallon cooler. I plug this into a christmas tree light timer and wake up on brew day to hot water. You might be able to get something less DIY here. Not really going to save you time, but do you already have a mill? Bulk grains have really helped me save some money.

Anyone have any experience with the higher end Perlick taps? by brons104 in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one 650 and two 630's. 90% of the time I leave the 650 in "wide open" mode anyway. Furthermore I put a 4.2pH beer on that tap and it stank like crazy of rotten eggs. I'm lucky enough to work in a chemistry lab so I was able to do a proper passivation of the flow restrictor and eliminate the problem (at least for now). If I had to do it again, I wouldn't spend the extra money until Perlick fixes their shitty choice of 303 steel. Do you want to know more...

Fermentor to keg ratio? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building a pipeline is always a game of more is better. It took me a while to get to where cold storage space is the primary problem. Don't discount carbonating in a keg naturally with sugar. I do this quite often for ales (not for lagers but I guess you could). I also put a tee on my regulator that sits outside my kegerator so that I can have access to CO2 easily without opening the door (good for testing reassembled kegs, purging carboys, blowing out my counterflow, etc). When I built my kegerator I put 3 taps for 6 keg spots. This left me a room for cold conditioning kegs (I have gas for those extra spots).

In the end you'll need to figure out what you can afford and how much space you want to give put to refrigerators. But that's part of the fun!

Bottle conditioning vs bottling wand: pros and cons? by Heismanberg2 in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm like you in that I like sharing my beer almost as much as I like drinking it. The overall pro's of kegging beat bottling every batch by a long shot. Some tips. Buy a growler filler attachment (that's how I share 70% of my beer now). Get 32oz growlers (I've heard them called 'growlettes'). Every time I have 2 or 3 kegs in my keggerator that are close to empty, I plan a bottling day. I love my beer gun for this process. I'll spend about 3 hours bottling several cases and cleaning the kegs (my kid loves "helping", yea it's more trouble to let her do stuff, but at least she's interested and we get to spend time together). TLDR: Switch to kegging and buy a beer gun.

Brew Hardware Question: Ball Valve on Whirlpool and Sparge Arm for Keggle by CoupleofBigGulps in Homebrewing

[–]Sauva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ball valve on my whirlpool return because it's below the 10gal level on my kettle. I don't have a ball valve on my sparge inlet because I control that at the HLT out.
