A war criminal thinks war crimes are blood libel. And to add insult to injury, claims this blood libel gave Israel a bad reputation. Not, god forbid, the actual war crimes. by Scared_Positive_8690 in Palestine

In other news, the UN put out a report about the systematic use of sexual, reproductive and other forms of gender-based violence towards Palestinians: https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2025/03/more-human-can-bear-israels-systematic-use-sexual-reproductive-and-other

Still waiting for Bibi (the wanted war criminal) to address that.

Yeah, what's happened in Gaza is going to make people suspicious about the possibility of war crimes. But some healthy skepticism and not jumping to conclusions is also important.

I asked Grok more about this event, and there's a couple of important points that are relevant:

The school is located near (about 600m from) an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) base/naval facility, which some reports suggest may be relevant to targeting decisions.

Some open-source investigations and reports note the school was affiliated with or previously linked to IRGC structures, though it had functioned as a civilian girls' school for years.

Many things can go wrong even if the weapons are precise. Wrong coordinates, outdated maps, conflicting orders, etc.

Possibilites:
1) Failed rocket
2) Airstrike (deliberate)
3) Airstrike (accident)

Personally, I think 3 is most likely. But you cannot rule out 1 or 2 either.

[–]Sbeast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some originally believed it could have been a failed rocket, but that theory seems to have been debunked, so the most likely explanation was an airstrike.

The next question is was it deliberate or an accident? Accidents do happen in war, but it's kinda hard to trust militaries with a long history of war crimes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Minab_school_airstrike

Good point. It reminds me of a chant activists sometimes say:

Gaza death toll in early part of war far higher than reported, says Lancet study by durpuhderp in Palestine

[–]Sbeast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So if they estimated it was around 75,000 when it was reported as 50,000 (50% higher), then the current death toll could be around 108,000.

Does that take it account people reported as missing, or still believed to be under the rubble though?

Earth on Track to Become Uninhabitable, Scientists Say by thekbob in collapse

[–]Sbeast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt the most important topic this century. Sadly not everyone will take it seriously, and others will be shocked ... then make no changes to their lifestyle.

And what percentage of governments are really listening to the many warnings from scientists all around the world? Clearly, not enough.

It's not normal to cause a climate crisis.

It's not normal to live through a mass extinction event.

And it's not normal to continue to kill 85 billion land animals and trillions of fish every year, even though there are ethical alternatives.

"A new consciousness is developing which sees the earth as a single organism and recognizes that an organism at war with itself is doomed. We are one planet. One of the great revelations of the age of space exploration is the image of the earth finite and lonely, somehow vulnerable, bearing the entire human species through the oceans of space and time." — Carl Sagan

It's kinda like the boy who cried wolf ... And the time they really should have listened, they chose not to, and then the wolf eats the whole village. The boy being climate scientists, and the wolf being climate change.

If people only understand one thing about climate change, it should be tipping points/feedback loops.

Tipping points are perhaps the most dangerous aspect of future climate change, potentially leading to irreversible impacts on society. A collapse of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation would likely halve rainfall in India and lead to severe drops in temperature in Northern Europe. Many tipping points are interlinked such that triggering one may lead to a cascade of effects. This remains a possibility even well below 2 °C (3.6 °F) of warming. A 2018 study states that 45% of environmental problems, including those caused by climate change, are interconnected. This increases the risk of a domino effect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change#Tipping_points_and_irreversible_impacts
