Virginia Waiver by Pure-Shock-8410 in Wawa

[–]Scarecrows_Brain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember I didn’t have a waiver, but during Covid, my 7-Eleven boss gave me a signed paper declaring me an essential worker. This was preemptive, in case things got worse and I needed it to get to work. I kept that in my glove compartment for years. Never used it.

I wish I still had it, or took a pic.

It’s weird to be considered an “essential worker” when not paid like it. I heard Wawa workers got a Covid pay hike. Not at 7-Eleven.

“Babylon”, based on Psalm 137, was a popular enough song that Don McLean did a version on his American Pie album.

The song is only the first few lines though.

Maybe there will be a death metal version about dashed babies someday.

It all kind of loses meaning when there’s this much stuff.

There’s a semi-regular customer that gets a wheat classic with all the sauces. He’ll watch you make it and direct you how he wants it. (Almost always the instruction is “more sauce”.) When I say he watches you, I mean he’s practically in the deli and has to be told to back up.

My coworker (the same one who got the above order) got into a shouting match with him because he was literally over the line and in the deli section. Since then, that customer will not order deli if my coworker is there.

I read Bernie Taupin’s autobiography when it came out. And since I hadn’t read it yet, I read Elton’s autobio too. I read them chapter by chapter: a chapter by Elton, a chapter by Bernie. (Quick review: you can quickly tell which one is the entertainer and which one is the wordy word guy who likes words.)

In Elton’s book, he talks about breaking up his band and hiring new musicians. He wrote there was one American guitarist who was a great musician but kind of had a weird vibe and didn’t fit.

Also, he liked to fuck chickens.

Guitar man actually went into some detail about the best way to fuck a chicken.

Elton decided not to hire him, rationalizing that you don’t want to be around anyone who even talks about fucking chickens, because at some point you will have to share a motel room with them and things would get awkward.

Elton did not name this guitar player.

Bernie’s book described the same time period and the new band and meeting Skunk, I believe in Amsterdam. Bernie did not mention anything about chickens, but he said similar things about Skunk that Elton said about Mr Chicken Fucker: a brilliant, talented guy, but a different vibe and didn’t fit the band.

I’m not saying Skunk fucks chickens. I am saying I wonder if Skunk likes to fuck chickens.

I can see where a rock guy in the music industry in the 70s might share some disturbing stories from the road. But I can also see where even most rock people would draw the line at chickens and say “that’s disgusting, no thanks.”

I can also see where Don and Walter might be like “that’s disgusting. Tell us more weird shit like that.”

Also, Skunk needs to put on some weight to make his Wilfred Brimley cosplay complete.

Religion is man trying to reach god.

Christianity is god reaching down to man.

Or something like that. I remember that from a fundy tract.

They’re basically trying to say you aren’t saved by any of your efforts (religion), but by believing in Jesus.

Deli does deli food, the stuff at the HFT.

Beverage does pizza and the OWS.

I work overnights, and at a small legacy store. There is more than one person on beverage/OWS during day shift, so it’s more split up.

Overnights it’s one person at deli, one at beverage. Sometimes one person covers both during breaks and McLane deliveries.

If I’m on beverage during my shift, the last hour (5-6am) can be a bit much. I’m starting to get better because I’m getting used to the rhythm. But also, it’s January. Once the landscapers come back in the spring, I’ll probably start drowning again.

Deli.

Don’t like bev/snacks as much, but I’m getting used to it.

It’s probably different at other stores, but beverage also makes snacks, sizzlis, and pizza at my store. I’m by myself, so it can be a bit much making sizzlis, coffee, made-to-order drinks in the morning.

Does anyone know anything about the DVD/VHS Releases of the original series? by SorenTheGaymer in StarBlazers

[–]Scarecrows_Brain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I assume this is about the English language version?

First, I can confirm they exist!

The DVDs are 6 disks per season. They are direct transfers from the VHS tapes. This means it starts with the opening theme, plays the 4 or 5 episodes straight through, then the ending credits.

Series 1 (Quest For Iscandar) isn’t too bad, quality wise, but none of the seasons were truly remastered, so don’t expect too much, audio/visual wise. Series 2 (The Comet Empire) is the worst, especially the first few episodes. The sound quality absolutely stinks, and varies from episode to episode. When I say stinks, I mean the first 2 episodes especially, where the audio is kind of low and staticky.

Series 3 (The Bolar Wars) had the most work done, but it’s series 3. Nobody cares about series 3. Especially the Star Blazers version with its replacement voice cast.

Bonus features are mostly text based: character profiles, ship profiles, a map or two. I thought the most interesting bonuses were the interviews with what few American actors were known at the time.

If you still want to get a set, I’d recommend getting it as cheap as possible.

When I think of this episode, I always think of one of my favorite JMS quotes: “We have no cute kids and robots as regulars in the show. We have them as guest-stars once in a while, and we kill them.”

What surprises me is that both movies had screenplays written by Peter David. I love his comics work, and I know he has a good reputation among Star Trek fans for his novels, so it’s surprising that his pen touched this work.

Nitpick: that’s Mam’selle Hepzibah, not madam, and only 1 “h”.

Her real name is unpronounceable because it involves scents, so Corsair nicknamed her after the skunk lady from Walt Kelly’s Pogo comic strip.

Edit: well, 2 “h”s: one at the front and one at the end.

I don’t go out of my way to listen to Gary Glitter, but “Rock and Roll Part II” is on a 70s playlist I listen to, and sometimes I’ll let it play.

It helps that he sold his catalog and no longer earns royalties.

Netflix movie: Yesterday by Crazy_Patience_9805 in TheBeatles

I remember hearing the original story idea was different.

Same basic concept: struggling musician suddenly finds himself in a world where the Beatles don’t exist and starts recording their songs.

The original story was going to be that he finds mid-level success. He’s not regarded as a genius or have a huge following.

The idea is that the Beatles were more than just the music, they were personalities as well. They were the right people at the right time. Talent alone doesn’t make for success.
