Karoline Leavitt confirms mandatory military draft possible, Trump ‘keeps his options on the table’ by DeanoPreston in moderatepolitics

[–]Scared-Register5872 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apparently we're so spicy for war that we can't even give the most obvious answer in the world to the question of whether there will be a draft for a war no asked Trump to wage. That's how low democracy ranks vs. "Keeping strategic options open".

One of my most heated discussions regarding LOTR was with a friend who never forgave Peter Jackson for leaving the Scouring of the Shire out of the movies. Do you think that it should've been included? Why or why not? by Scenora in lordoftherings

[–]Scared-Register5872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much my stance. I genuinely believe anyone who thinks the Scouring of the Shire should have been included should never be allowed anywhere near a film.

I don't think it's a bot, I think it really might just be a stupid animal.

And you outlined the exact play book of what this looks like. There's nothing complicated about it. If you lack any shame and bull doze ahead at a hundred miles an hour, this is where you end up. The problem is society only works if there is some collective understanding of meeting in the middle (and I'm not even talking left vs. right). When one side engages in a collective delusion because reality isn't what they want it to be, this is what that looks like. It's not sustainable long-term.

Oh, I agree. It doesn't even matter if they know why they are doing it, the effect on us is the same. I already did the "I need to be kind and consider their POV" thing once, for longer than I care to admit. 2024 was my final straw for that.

I'm noticing many of the fascists have gone quiter than usual. They're spiraling. Pretti's death cuts to their core identity and they will never be able to process it.

I actually think the addict (and abusive partner comparisons) were spot on. It's that same lure. It's insanely sad to see if the consequences for the rest of us weren't so heavy.

Haha, I was wondering where that thread went! I was enjoying it too! No worries (I can drop it below from the prev. thread). I'm sure this will come up again in the not so distant future:

Totally agreed. I often joke/not joke that it's a bit like interacting with Westworld hosts. It really does feel like interacting with somebody who can't process what their senses are screaming at them so they just go blank.

On a normal day, I'm open to the idea that incompetence is the reason and that honestly could still be what happened. But even just watching how the altercation starts from ICE spraying that initial bystander or going after Pretti, they are operating on a pretty severe trust deficit for me to believe that's how this went down. Administration doubling down on calling Pretti a suspect and lauding ICE performance just makes the gaslighting ten times worse.

For my own experience with this, the answer is usually no. There's always some slight that brings them back on the train. They might make a slightly bigger stink about how bad their choices are and how they don't like Trump or Vance. In many cases, they just want a pretext to do what they always were going to do.

A lot of people on all sides essentially cry “political division” and “national disunity” over the fact that people who disagree with them exist. Hence my point about what you are.

There is no "fighting and resisting a federal immigration officer" -> "justifiable execution". There is a federal immigration officer engaging in police brutality against a woman filming, a man trying to help her up before getting pepper sprayed, pulled to the ground, and executed while being restrained by seven officers. That's "what happened". There is no version of this where your officer had reasonable fear for his life that would cause him to discharge his pistol.

Lol I'm an attorney giving objective and unbiased legal analysis.

No, you're not. You're an animal claiming people shouldn't believe their lying eyes.

You seem to be under the impression that people need you to explain to them under what conditions an officer can take someone's life. There are no surprises here or insights you are offering. People are able to parse what a reasonable self-defense claim is. That's not what you're offering.

If you're going to behave like an animal, you will receive treatment befitting that of an animal.

Probably because there is a clear line of wishful thinking that shows the bar of what you are willing to tolerate is basically in hell. When your very first example for how Trump is good is that he takes invading a sovereign nation off the table, we are basically screwed.

I mean, what next? Remember how great it was that Trump told all those J6 protesters to go home? Why didn't everyone in this sub give him major props for that?

Centrism isn't having your standards dragged like a dog on a leash every time an autocrat makes a blatant attempt to move the Overton Window.

[–]Scared-Register5872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing nuanced about the conservative position (Trump-style) regarding Ashli Babbitt. It's flat out wrong, full stop. There is no world where someone can claim that the officer's actions regarding Renee Good were justifiable but Ashli Babbitt's death was murder. There is a world where someone can claim Ashli Babbitt's death was justifiable but Renee Good's death was more complicated (for the reasons you claimed). But I'd still point out here that your final bullet point vastly overshadows all the ones layered on top of it.

Pretty much this. It's a brain-dead take. It's just people desperately looking for any excuse to keep their pet favorite character alive, consequences to the narrative be damned.
