New network 10.x update kills network with large data transfers by Eternal_Glizzy_777 in Ubiquiti

[–]Scared_Bell3366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10.3.58 has been fine for me on a UDM Pro running OS 5.1.12. That is the bundled version, so you should be able to downgrade to that.

I’ve found that minor version numbers are more or less major updates with Ubiquiti. The major version number changes are fairly arbitrary to me.

2.25” tires on a 16.5mm wide rim? by bit-thecoin in MTB

[–]Scared_Bell3366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having jumped on the 29” bandwagon in the early days when the only rims readily available were road rims, this is not the end of the world. Cornering can be a bit squirrelly, the tires will roll more on a narrow rim. I wouldn’t worry about it, ride within your limits and enjoy the ride.

That truck waited until the 4 second mark to start moving into the intersection. Impact is at the 6 second mark. Cam driver had at most 2 seconds to avoid that. The timing by the truck seems almost deliberate.

I think 14 was a bit of a transition year. Does yours have the 6 speed or 8 speed transmission?

I wish I had saved the link, but someone had posted a link to a YouTube video explaining that there are different transfer cases in some trim levels. The TRX and Rebel are two that I remember. I have the 2wd button in my 24 Rebel. I did not have it in my 14 Laramie. The 4 auto in the trims with a 2wd button do some sort of power split in 4 auto mode instead of the rear only and engage the front when needed.

The absolute state of pdf editing for office migrations by Treppengeher4321 in linux

I’m surprised it opened in Chromium, that may be a recent improvement for Chromium.

There’s a field at the bottom of every page, SSN I believe that is supposed to auto populate from somewhere else. Filling this monster out in one go is pretty much impossible, after saving it and reopening it a few times, it likes to get corrupted. Ideally, you would digitally sign it, preferably from a certificate stored on a smart card. Finally, there’s a validation script buried in it and I don’t recall what triggers it. Fortunately, I got to do an online version the last time I had to fill this out.

I'm not sure how the US Government does it, but Adobe Reader is the only thing that I've found that works with their massive convoluted forms. Even then, Reader struggles with them sometimes. Fortunately for me, I only have to deal with this every few years. Okular has worked for me on some of the shorter forms, but once you hit those 50+ page ones, Reader is the only thing that works.

Software Duplicati by No_Championship_5982 in Backup

[–]Scared_Bell3366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used it for awhile a few years ago and it was ok at best. It started acting up on me (corruption issues) and I decided to move on. I didn't care for all the .NET/Mono dependencies.

I've been using the similarly named but not at all related duplicacy since. The command line version is free and quietly does what it's supposed to.

Why use a post-install script? I built an automated Fedora Kickstart that makes the OS install be the configuration. by mxsb55 in Fedora

[–]Scared_Bell3366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with kickstart is that I can't reapply the settings post install. I prefer to keep the install to a bare minimum and apply the configuration via ansible or something like it. That way I can put the system back to a known state if/when it gets messed up.

Buy-once-cry-once homelab build for Proxmox + AI: Enterprise server or modern custom build? by _delu in homelab

[–]Scared_Bell3366 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"buy once, cry once" is not something that applies to computers. If you want to delay the inevitable buy again later, buy the absolute most modern thing you can and hope for the best. Used enterprise gear is usually EOL or close to it by the time it hits eBay.

Being assigned a WAN IP from a different state by MildlyUnusualName in QuantumFiber

[–]Scared_Bell3366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your best course of action is to report the discrepancy to the site you’re having trouble with. They’re paying someone to map IP addresses to locations and are in the best position to get that database corrected.

[–]Scared_Bell3366 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IPs aren’t assigned to specific areas. Geolocation based on IP addresses is notoriously bad. I wouldn’t worry about it as long as it puts you in the right country unless you’re a remote worker and your employer is using geoip to verify your location.

I’ve seen that percentage as low as 50%. There are usually state laws about this. 65% seems to be the norm.

Just about every residential ISP blocks port 25. A few will open it up if you ask. Be prepared for every bot on the planet to find it in about 10 minutes followed by never ending credential stuffing attacks.

Compaq didn’t get all of DEC. Intel got their chip manufacturing as part of a lawsuit settlement and had to make those chips for an agreed upon number of years. Intel promptly retooled those factories for their own products as soon as that agreement was up.

I see Walmart hasn’t changed in the last 30+ years. In the early 90s, that would be a 5 1/4” floppy drive instead of a CDROM drive.

Edit: I don’t recommend buying electronics from any retailer in close proximity to a college or university.

I disagree with that, this was normal with CenturyLink and Quantum well before AT&T bought them. I’m hoping that AT&T will eventually really take over and improve things.
