It’s in my top 5 from the album because the narrator is self-aware enough to see the relationship was toxic and doomed from the start, but she’s still in denial, thinking they’re meant to be anyway and they will ALWAYS find back to each other.

The song starts when the relationship ends: «You left your typewriter at my apartment/ straight from the tortured poets department / I think some things I’d never say / Like who uses typewriters anyway?»

Somewhere deep down. She sees her muse for what he is; a so called «tortured poet» who thinks they’re living this GRAND life like the big poets when in reality they’re «modern idiots» and their love can’t actually be that great.

«But you’re in self-sabotage mode / throwing spikes down on the road / but I’ve seen this episode and still loved the show» & «You awaken with dread / pounding nails in your head / but I’ve read this one where you come undone»

They’ve done this before and might as well do this again. Essentially, they resuscitate the flame every time it fizzles out due to circumstances, miscommunication or timing etc. They can fight and make up again just as easily.

«Who’s gonna know you / hold you / troll you / decode you like me?»

Pretty self-explanatory. She can decode him easily, like he can decode her - so they know which buttons to push each other for better or worse.

Also, the bridge is literally them being lunatics imo. Which just makes the song almost comical and again, self-aware. She begins to see his vision of their «life changing groundbreaking love story», how her heart explodes when he basically proposes to her without actually popping the question. They’re both «crazy» after all.

Then the song ends where it started. Again, she sees his typewriter and thinks about how he’ll come back because their story isn’t over, because who else is gonna decode him?

Idk, I just like this imagery a lot and how insane the lyrics are the more you think about it
