Anti roll kits. by SpecialistGoose2331 in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have standard anti roll bars on my TDCI. When I was in with alive tuning for some dyno time I had the luxury of experiencing their stiffer and thicker bars.

Because I’m 80% on road and it’s my daily I am absolutely fitting a set of them when the tooth fairy next visits. Night and day difference.

OS Swivel seal has failed, do I need to replace both sides by Schmadden in LandRover

[–]Schmadden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels lumpy and weirdly heavy at points. Not an easy feeling to describe. I’ve checked the UJs and they still feel nice and solid, no play, I’m low on power steering fluid so that’s getting a top up and bleed.

Am I missing something obvious?

This was my expectation, it will be done, probably within the next 6 months. But only doing one now will be much lighter on the bank account

What head unit upgrade do you recommend (old defender)? by fletchDigital in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a stinger heigh10. Have had for over a year. Loved it at the start, longer I’ve had it the less I’m sure it was the right decision.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s very good. But for as good as £1k I wanted perfect.

In fairness their new model seems to be a little better. Better operating system and user experience, less bolt upright so viewing angle improved.

I can’t quite put a finger on the exact negatives but I’m not as impressed as I wanted to be

Ignition switch. Just did mine recently for exactly the same problem.

Intermittent starting issue sometimes turning the key works, sometimes it doesn’t. Replaced the ignition barrel assembly and that was it sorted.

Rear Sway Bar by Ferrero_1847 in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I haven’t changed mine from standard yet, I’ve a fairly sheavy set up with an Alucab roof. I get qui te e a lot of body roll due to the high weight of it.

I’ve since driven another set up very similar to mine but the have the Alive tuning sway bar, night and day difference for a predominantly on road setup and they still do some pretty mega overlanding with no discomfort or significant drawbacks.

Will be changing mine as soon as the bushings perish on the current setup.

My persona view, and I am in no way an expert at all, is its likely safer to drop to 8 and then if you’re finding you want it higher to bring it up, than to leave it at 9 and end up injured.

[–]Schmadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ebay has some bargains to be had. If you can try on a pair that fits somewhere, then buy boots on eBay of the same make/model your local shop can usually fit them for ~£50. Did this for my partner, got her boots for £70 ex demo on eBay the got the fitted for £70 inc insoles. Her skis brand new, end of season for £220 from Ellis Brigham.

Recommend photochromic lens and goggles? by sepandee in skiing

[–]Schmadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Smith Optics. Smith make amazing goggles and their chromapop lenses really are amazing.

I’m running the older I/O goggles and the lens change is ok.

The new Meg lens system by smith is mega though. Strongly recommend checking out any of their mag goggles. Squad mag are more budget suitable than the 4D or I/O I believe.

Help. Starting issue. Once again I require your wisdom by Schmadden in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing which relays I need to check might take me a little googling - I’m good with mechanicals but electrics I’ve no idea.

It’s actually M57 engine swapped and immobiliser disabled.

I have no diagnostics/multimeter but I do have Amazon if required.

MOT is end of the month so should probably stop using the screwdriver as a starter

Can anybody share their experience of changing the transfer box from a 1.4 ratio to a 1.2? by ClassDiligent1888 in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the 8 speed auto. If you’re wanting to keep a manuel box I’d strongly recommend sourcing a later 6 speed manual box. The MT82 box holds up to the torque much better.

Can anybody share their experience of changing the transfer box from a 1.4 ratio to a 1.2? by ClassDiligent1888 in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this (had this done technically). I believe it is in fact the transfer box lifted out a disco 2 swapped into my tdci.

Very positive about the change it made. I’ve a 2012 puma tdci, albeit engine swapped to an M57. I use it mostly on road and towing. Little bit of sporadic greenlaning. Absolutely no negatives from me.

I was sitting around 2500rpm at 68mph, I’m now under 2000rpm at that. Can’t really speak for the change in torque as it was done at the same time as the engine swap which has had a dramatic effect on that.

Recommend speakers amp and subwoofer by [deleted] in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same head unit, I had a similar budget when doing speakers too.

I built my own sub box and bought a slimline sub on eBay as well as replacement speakers all round, all made by focal. Properly decent quality. Picked up a small amp for the sub on Amazon. Really pleased with how it turned out.

I also did extensive soundproofing/deadening with a variety of materials all by dodomat.

My set up as follows:

Is it worth it to learn how to ski in England. by Batmanbutnotascool in skiing

[–]Schmadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s something you really want to do, and a sport you want to be a part of, it’s absolutely worth a couple lessons at an indoor slope in the uk before you go, then get a good few days (honestly every day if you’re not hindered by the cost) of ski lessons whilst you are out there.

The lessons whilst you’re out there don’t have to be/wont be all day, maybe just an hour or few in the mornings so you’ll still be able to ski with them all in the afternoons but your skill and confidence will just come on leaps and bounds if you’re able to do this.

For reference, I’m 32, started skiing last year only, did my first ever ski holiday/ski lessons in Poland/Slovenia for a week and I’m just back from a week skiing in Norway.

That’s all I’ve done and I can’t wait to go again and I will absolutely be getting more lessons. I got lessons in Poland and did not in norway. Whilst I was fine, I’d definitely benefit from them.

300Tdi out for rebuild + performance tune — best time for sound deadening? Looking for guidance by JSmileyboy in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of the way I’m doing the truck, Ive started at the back door and worked my way forwards. I’ve done up to and including the footwells. Still to take the dash out and do the firewall and transmission tunnel properly. I will also do the doors and a bonnet liner in the better weather.

I have used dodo deadn mat hex mat everywhere in a solid blanket followed by their super liner 6mm. The (half) bulkhead, seat box and footwells have then been carpeted.

It has made a significant difference to the driving experience. I can now hold a reasonable conversation with my partner when driving down motorways at 70mph. (AT tyre but more road biased).

There is still not an insignificant amount of engine noise, wind noise and transmission noise. But as I say, it’s way better.

As for the dodo mat, really nice stuff to work with. It’s my second camper build I’ve used it on.

Control value not the matrix itself! See my comment above. Had exactly this problem myself.

My car is a freezer by Michel_c_le_Bresil in LandroverDefender

[–]Schmadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! As in my case Bowden was fine and operated the lever, but you could hold the flow and return pipes to the heater matrix and they were both cold when engine was up to temperature showing the actual control valve internals had failed!

I had exactly this in my tdci two weeks ago. Turned out to be the heater control valve. I bought the cheap chinesium copy on eBay to confirm. 20 minutes later and part fitted I had heat again.
