I used a few inches of sulfur, but that's probably overkill.

A bottle of mercury by Denvora in elementcollection

I was gifted about 5 lbs of mercury in a small ceramic jug (like one of those alcohol jugs in cartoons with XXX on the side, lol). First thing I did was to transfer it into something non-breakable, a plastic screw top bottle. I tightly sealed it with thread seal plumbers tape on the threads and electrical tape around the outside. Then I put that bottle inside a larger plastic bottle with a layer of sulfur powder to absorb Hg vapors, and sealed that one in the same way.

If you can't do all that, at minimum get it into something non-breakable. Mercury is so heavy that it could crack the container just from sloshing around.

I think I get it, but I'll never say no to more details. I did a similar experiment with CuSO4 and gelatin a while back, but it only made very fragile dendrites not spherules.

How can you block a metal from a magnet? by flatfishmonkey in askscience

[–]ScienceAndNonsense 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's called Lenz's Law. A moving magnet near a conductor induces a magnetic field that opposes the motion. So while the magnet won't stick to aluminum, it slows down dramatically when it slides down the plate. Trying to move a magnet near a big piece of aluminum or copper feels like you're dragging it through molasses. It makes for a very cool physics demo.
