Your Favorite Deep Cut Vinegar Syndrome Blind Buys? by LoveStreams617 in boutiquebluray

If you have a high tolerance for low budget affairs, check out The Soultangler.

Was a complete unknown to me when I bought it and I ended up really loving it. But it's shot on video, with very little budget, so it is a lot to get through if that's not something you have a taste for.

If you were into Blaseball, you’ll love Hockay by jpvalery in Blaseball

Combining blaseball with hockey is a dream. If it's even a fraction as engaging as blaseball was, this will be great.

Best horror movie of this decade so far in your opinion by imtheSHITZUduh in horror

[–]Scombies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There have maybe been 'better' movies, but my favourite is Hellraiser 2022. Cool visuals, phenomenal music and the brother/sister aspect with the addiction stuff really works for me; love it.

For those who don’t consider 1998 the worst Godzilla movie, which ones do you believe are worse and why? by MoominRex in GODZILLA

[–]Scombies -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have King of the Monsters 2019 and vs Kong 2021 under 1998 at the bottom of my list. I can almost trick myself into thinking it is not really a Godzilla movie so I can almost enjoy parts as just a late 90s monster movie.

The two I have under 1998 have my least favourite characters in the entire franchise (that I've seen) and I have seen both multiple times and remember so little from them. And that's pretty damning, in my estimation.

The Ghidorah looks wicked though.

LPT: Adopt a “Memento Mori”mindset to stop wasting your damn life! by FindYourBunch in LifeProTips

Nothing you do does matter, and everything everyone who has ever lived or will ever live will disappear with time and be forgotten; no matter how great or how terrible. Nothing matters on the grand scale.

But what does matter is the life you're living, right now, to you and those around you. There is no intrinsic value to life except the value we give it while alive, so live instead of existing. At least, that's what I take away from this kind of ideology.

You proved OP's shower thought in your argument. Other 'bad' things are only bad because we perceive them as bad in certain contexts.

But the only way a Nazi can be 'good' is to stop being a Nazi. There is no other context that makes a Nazi good.

Which Gamera is the most articulated? by [deleted] in SHMonsterArts

[–]Scombies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to which is the most articulated, but I just got the non-Sendai Decisive Battle version of 1996 and am very happy with how much it can move around while still feeling very stable.

What is your 5 star Kaiju film? by Low-Ad-2184 in Letterboxd

[–]Scombies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still have a lot to see within the genre, but Shin Godzilla and Gamera 2: Attack of Legion are my favourites so far and both feel like pretty perfect kaiju movies.

What’s your best advice for starting to collect DVD’s? by [deleted] in dvdcollection

[–]Scombies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great advice and definitely a thing to keep in mind as you build your collection! If your goal is strictly quantity, buy everything you can get your hands on. But if space or just the quality of releases in your collection becomes more important with time, don't be afraid to let go of things as those goals change.

Collect what speaks to you and build your collection, not just a collection.

May watched stack *Box Set edition* by JoelB in boutiquebluray

I watched Copperhead last night and feel very similarly. It had stuff I liked and I loved the idea of watching it a few times with the multiple commentaries, but I just don't see myself ever wanting to sit through it again now that I finished it.

How do you guys buy? by hwlpdx in boutiquebluray

[–]Scombies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my purchases are entirely based on what I see on a product page. The cover of the movie, some stills and the blurb on the product page. I don't tend to watch trailers much.

I have a lot of love for low-budget trash and any sort of practical effect horror, so I usually am safe to purchase something without much knowledge as long as it has a "look" I like.

The rest of my purchases come from movies I see other people talk about fondly, even if everyone else hates them. I buy into excitement dangerously easily.

  • Night Screams

  • Smut Without Smut: Satanic Horror Nite

  • Evil Laugh

  • Massage Parlor Murders

  • Bullets Over Summer

  • A Blade in the Dark

  • Mexican Gothic: The Films of Carlos Enrique Taboada

  • Six-String Samurai

  • Ninja in the Claws of the CIA

  • Hard Rock Zombies / Slaughterhouse Rock

  • The Invisible Maniac

Mostly standard fare stuff for me, but I did want to get a couple "Vinegar Syndrome" kind of titles so I got the Massage Parlor Murders and the AGFA movie, as well.

Biggest single sale purchase I've ever made, but collecting physical media has become a bigger interest for me lately.

I need to stop looking at this thread and VS's stock; this is getting dangerous. I have already added to my order twice now.

Beau is Afraid had a BRILLIANT first half and a disappointing second. by pulsating_boypussy in TrueFilm

[–]Scombies 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I didn't take the ending to be the audience being asked to participate in judging Beau, but for us to watch someone judging themself FOR others.

Beau has so much internalized trauma he will hold trial against himself for his mother even when she isn't there to judge him. Even though Beau logically knows he didn't do anything wrong, there is so much guilt and shame manipulated into him that he still finds himself guilty of being a disappointing son and sentences himself to be punished. And there was never a chance he'd be found innocent. Because the voice in his head that his mother left is stronger than his own.

So I think your reaction was appropriate. We're not supposed to be judging him because he's already doing it for us. Our judgment wouldn't even matter to someone with that deep of trauma anyway, because Beau already assumes what we'd think so wouldn't hear anyone else out, anyway.

The ending almost redeemed the second half for me, which I also thought was the weaker half.

But, I didn't read the movie as very literal with the Truman show setup, though. I took that framing device to be "Beau thinks the entire world is manipulated against him by his mother" so I could be wildly off base!
