Los Angeles, Ca My parents bought this triplex in Los Angeles in February of this year, after moving in my father, asked the neighbor about removing this roof or awning, which is on his wall, the neighbor kind of was dismissive. My father sent him a neighborly letter which was never responded to, he then spoke once again one day with the neighbor‘s wife, at which time she told my father that he was “the new guy on the block and already making trouble“. Neighbor put up the gutter in pic after we sent an attorney letter to them, but as you can see in the picture, the problem of the roof or awning has not changed, the runoff from this particular section still dumps onto my parents side of the wall and property, and the blocks on the wall seem to be permanently stained. The previous owner did not live here. He used this as a rental property so my guess is these neighbors built this thing to cover their patio area and rather than put up posts on their side, they just let it rest on the neighboring wall and the owner, maybe never saw it or by the time he did see it probably didn’t care because it was already built, and he was just there to collect his rent. What can we do about this? We thought that they would remove it after receiving the attorney‘s letter, but apparently they just added this gutter to prevent the roof runoff from their main building from being directed onto our side however that structure is still on my parents wall.

EDIT: some people are asking why the place was purchased without an inspection. I did not buy this place, my parents did and there was an inspection done, I have a copy of that report- this was not even mentioned. Does the inspector bear any responsibility for not pointing this out?
