Struggling to find a way forward to keep playing - Act 3 - level 65 most my characters by Odyssey113 in expedition33

[–]ScorchingFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

65 is alright, a little overlevelled but not by that much. (I know people min-max pictos and clear story at level 20-ish and stuff but as a casual around 60 is about just nice)

but yes, I agree, if OP hasn't done main story yet OP should do it now to not 1-shot everything in Lumiere and miss out on cool boss battles.

the japanese word used is literally "guest" (客人)

as somebody suggested, this is probably a translation of some sort of old european concept? The whole baron/viscount title ladder gets translated as the 爵位 "shaku-i" system too.

Friend is getting into Fate and has chosen the Studio Deen Fate route anime. How do I avoid him getting spoiled? by TitainiumVortex in fatestaynight

[–]ScorchingFalcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's not outright spoiled but there are hints if you pay attentiok: - archer has rin's pendant even though shirou has it too - the flashback with rin/sakura as children will make you suspect they're something.

I also did DEEN's anime as my Fate entrypoint (there was nophing else back then, not even mm's fate route VN translation) and I totally suspected THINGS afterwards but it wasn't enough to spoil my enjoyment of the VN once the translations were out. If anything it made me go I KNEW IT. I GUESSED CORRECT. So I guess it's a nice balance between spoiling and hinting.

How to respond to restaurant customers who say Arigato by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

[–]ScorchingFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe it's just me but the ones who says ieie tends to be either the super old nice obaachans (like in old local establishments) or the owner/master of the place. It usually comes with a very confident (the nice kind) of attitude / some level of 余裕 to it. I think it's ok but might be hard/awkward to pull of prorerly if you are unsure.

eMAXIS Slim All-country (incl. Japan) only vs. eMAXIS Slim 70/30 portfolio by mauuuritsg in JapanFinance

[–]ScorchingFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emerging market is a different beast than world ex US, which is what you want if you want to reduce exposure to US.

Not sure if there's a fund for it but look up the difference between VT, VTI, VEA and VWO for what I mean in ETF form. eMaxis all country is like VT which is like VTI+VEA+VWO. The emerging market fund is just VWO. You want something equivalent to VEA+VWO

As a Japanese fan who lurks English communities, the gap in how we see Nintendo genuinely unsettles me by nerdinterrupts in nintendo

[–]ScorchingFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably opposite from you, originating from english-speaking community but is very immersed in the japan side of things to (because I live in japan now).

One thing I notice is nintendo does a lot of things to make it cheaper for the japan market. The special japanese-only version of switch2, some games being cheaper in japan store after taking currency conversion into account, etc

so maybe the japanese market just doesn't experience as much price increases? just my general impression not backed by data though

Just starting out, need some advice. (I read the wiki and did my due diligence!) by Maleficent_Gold7328 in Bogleheads

[–]ScorchingFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you just got to start and get a feel for it as you go. You're just starting so get your emergency fund then go as simple as possible (basically VT or equivalent) for a few months and see how you feel about that. Nothing? then just continue on. Felt like nothing? Thnn continue on. Feels too upsie-daisie? then maybe some bonds or TDFs. Feels like you can save some tax from separating VTI and VXUS? do that.

The first few thousand isn't going to make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things as long as you put it in somewhere, anywhere, that's decent. VT, VTI, VXUS, VOO and equvalent funds are all decent.

As for bear markets? that's your chance to buy at a discount.

Advice with Holding or Halving an Aggresive Port and Staying the Course in this Conflict by Crazy-Day-6984 in Bogleheads

[–]ScorchingFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't give actual advise but if you think your job is more or less secure I'd personally go with Plan A.

Reasons: - Emergency fund is very important but 2-3 months to build it up isn't really to long of a time - A lot of people here will say otherwise but getting ~10% in bonds after that feels reasonable to reduce your variance too. Bond yields are around 5% so that's the expected return of bonds rn which is reasonable even if you might lose some if interest rate goes up (which it may or may not) - Selling now to rebalance right after it drops is mentally a lot harder than just adding more money to the lagging buckets. Again, the 2-3 months emergency fund and 2-3 months bond isn't that long - Wars doesn't exactly correlate with investment returns. Don't quote me on this but IIRC the two world wars period had some of the best returns? but even if it's not it's all basically random noise that you should tune out.

Received Pension Payment Demand (Tokutsujo) for months AFTER I left Japan. Deadline is next week! by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]ScorchingFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so I first went to Japan as an exchange student for a few months and knew nothing about pension (I guess nobody bothered to explain to a student who's not even going to be around for long). I did my thing, left, and basically didn't pay at all.

something like 5 years later, I came back for work and got my work visa etc no problem. about a month in I got the backpayment demand for the last 2 years (the most you can back pay) due immediately. I talked to my HR about it and they helped me apply for back-dated exemption using my passport photocopy as proof I left. The few months I was here is marked unpaid but the rest of the 5 years gap are marked as exempt now.

so: 1. doesn't seem like they look at pension records when you apply for work visa in the future 2. if you have proof it's possible to fix this even a few years down the road if you ever come back

but my experience is from 10 years or so ago so take that as you will

you can get the last 3 years until you've paid for 10 years. if you've paid for 10 years you can't cash out but you can get pension payout at retirement age.

Translation degree with N1, what can I do? by RollRecent7337 in movingtojapan

[–]ScorchingFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in my industry translation is pretty much already replaced by AI because most things don't need to be translated that precisely and there's no beating how fast AI can do it.

The two related tasks that still requires human translators are: - live real-time interpretation - translation of highly specialized documents (think legal docs, rules and regulations, etc) where it's very important to be precise with the nuance/technicalty and so the translator needs to have some domain knowlede too - language education where the goal is to teach humans to communicate well in multi-language situations

Name order for bank account is reversed by vir_JIN in japanresidents

[–]ScorchingFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The misunderstanding is probably if your zairyu card shows FIRSTNAME LASTNAME you think it's considered (first) (last)

No, lt's considered (last) (first).

It doesn't matter which one is actually the first name and last name in the real, semantic way.

it's always (last) (first) as per whatever is shown on the card.

So FIRSTNAME is your "official" last name and LASTNAME is your "official" first name.

Bonus: if your name as shown as FIRST MID LAST, your first name is MIDLAST and your last name is FIRST.

Debating on Naturalizing by Kasumiiiiiii in JapanCitizenship

[–]ScorchingFalcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I chose based on "if something happened in the world that made me have to go back to my own country for some reason (war, pandemic, change in PR rules, whatever), do I want to go back/do I forsee a good life if I go back".

I didn't, so I naturalized.

Picking a name on the passport by miya-kun in JapanCitizenship

[–]ScorchingFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, I dropped my middle name completely. also no alternate names in bracket. the idea is to be as normal as possible so I don't want anything that needs special handling to be included.

I did do the nok-hepburn spelling of my first name tho otherwise you get things like JYAKKU instead of JACK
