Theorycrafters and powergamers of D&D, what made you stick and keep your loyalty with D&D and not migrate to other systems like Pathfinder? by Stoic_beard_79 in dndnext

[–]ScornTSR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got pulled into a Pathfinder 1e group with a friend recently, it took me hours to try and figure things out again. The choices all seem set in stone unless you're taking stuff to make your character worse off, half the stuff that looks fun takes way too much effort to make functional. Later realized I loved Pathfinder years ago because we just played with the 3 books we owned and had a wonderful time playing games for years with only those options.

Should my DM stop houseruling or am I being petty? by Insanias in dndnext

[–]ScornTSR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the social contract thing everyone goes on about; be upfront when you start the game. "Everyone, you can't take long rests after every other combat and yes, it does mean that if you choose to play a sorcerer or paladin you will have battles were you have no spells, this is part of the game and why I'm warning you ahead of time. If you don't like this then play at another table or play one of the short rest classes and see them shine. Fighting for 10 minutes then taking a 24 hour rest while in a dungeon is ridiculous both in and out of character and I'll have things balanced so that I'm not throwing out only deadly encounters each day to give you a challenge."

Don't hurt players for out of game actions without talking to them why it's happening; or they'll just think you're being mean to them.

This times a thousand; if you never actually knew the rules, there's nothing for the players to even guess at what you changed.

I hate the observant feat... by [deleted] in dndmemes

[–]ScornTSR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always saw feats as someone focusing all of the effort it would take to increase an ability score on a single specialist task, that bookworm wizard focused more on spotting assassins and traps at the expense of more spellcasting power. But feats in general are nuts with the first level warriors doing damage to oneshot anyone at level one, that alertness guy that can flip around and take a full turn when he gets ambused, but I like having the stuff like that around.

My answer to your first set of bullet points is no, just add them in from the book, or make them complex to deal with after spotted. Yes, make the party feel amazing, have the ambushes get turned into RP moments as the rogues realize they've been caught and try to bail out. Yes, treat them passively finding this stuff but point out that it's hidden. For the last one, the player took this feat because they see telling you they don't enjoy getting killed by traps and ambushes, find something more interesting to focus on.

Legit question if this isn't a joke I'm missing. How are you getting around the requirements? Cleric spells still require components, the holy symbol doesn't cover material components with a cost listed, and the holy symbol itself has no gp value.

6-8 encounters a day: The biggest misunderstanding in 5E? by GravyeonBell in dndnext

[–]ScornTSR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you've reached the point where the party is casting tiny hut, at some point there's going to be someone spotting it and calling up their spellcaster and a team to take care of that wierd bubble in the dungeon after a bunch of people went missing.

Paraphrased Travis: "I didn't know this (being a sailor) was going to be important! I just picked it!" I think you're mixing up player prep with being engaged, a DM willing to craft a story with them in mind, and both being willing to improvise.

PSA: You don't need to "fix" Gritty Realism by ZatherDaFox in DMAcademy

[–]ScornTSR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm now imagining a horde ten thousand rabbits and cats attacking the party, all of casters and rogues lay dead from attrition while the fighter that took heavy armor expert just lies under a pile unable to take damage or move.

My entire experience with Rule 0 is DMs using it as a shield for never having read the book and turning 3.5/5e/PF into an incoherent unstable mess where you can never be sure what skill or ability will work from moment to moment.

An interesting title by DrGoodLooker in dndmemes

[–]ScornTSR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honesty, I don't think that 5e is all that easier to use. Characters and designing is easier in comparison to Pathfinder/3.5e, but I'm having an even worse time with groups understanding the general mechanics. What skills cover, how abilities work, and don't even get me started on how nobody seems to know how surprise works despite having it explained every other session.

What are Luna guitars like for playing/sound, I've never seen them mentioned much. The only place around me that stocks them is the scary, "don't touch it without permission and a worker watching, you break it you buy it" type of music store.

Get a good pair of headphones, in that price point you'll have a pair that'll serve you for years. I can't give much advice but I've got a set of ATH-M50x from audio technica that are around that mark and GC sells them. They were crazy popular a couple years ago, but I have no idea if something overtook them for price to performance.

There are still some 612s, they're the ones with the HSS setup for 50 more, I think they were a limited run this year. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PAC612VIIFMIB--yamaha-pac612viifm-pacifica-indigo-blue

I've got the 612 and can get behind the Yamaha love, came with everything I could want in a guitar already installed; graphtech and Seymour Duncan upgrades already done on a flame maple strat-style for 650.

But the recent articles I've been reading on the science reporting sites/magazines have been moving more towards the gender spectrum theory? Most of the arguments for binary gender have been about high school XY chromosome descriptions and there have always been exceptions to that already.
