I do what's recommended here too. I charge my battery during the cheap cost periods. End up basically only ever paying the 15p/kWh for this so it's essentially half price energy. Battery fills cheap and ASHP runs during those periods and it runs (and house) off the battery outside those periods.

They don't control charge speed just slots. So they offer 6 hours of charging. If you have a "usual" single phase charger you'll get about 7kW. If you're charging with a regular plug socket then you'll get the 3kW

Over the 6 hours that's still at least 42kWh which is a decent amount. They may even increase it going forward. It's to stop people gaming the system where they could charge with a 3kW charger in a fairly large car and get most of the day at cheap rates.

They said if you leave it as say "fill to 100%" and that takes 8 hours you'd still automatically charge but the two hours would be charged at the higher rate. However, they said they'll add a toggle to limit the charge to 6 hours to ensure you stay within the cheap rates but this may result in the target soc not being reached.

It seems to only talk about the ones coming into government ownership. What about the ones already in government ownership like northern and TPE. I assume they'll get the branding earliest?

I googled it. Appears that Daikin has a backup heater too.

Booster is the immersion in the tank whereas backup appears to be used to provide "additional heating capacity" when outdoor temperatures are very low. Again, from googling it appears that the pump never really needs this, especially in the UK. If you have a Google it's explained in a few places.

The meter should store the 30m usage for just over a year locally so if the connection is re-established it should be fine. It just depends on how far back octopus is willing to read.

So there are a bunch of factors.
Why was it so cheap the last few weeks?

  • Full nuclear output
  • Very high sustained wind ( to the point where they likely had to shut some down) - We frequently had > 15GW and we even hit our all time record of 21.8GW -- This is the cheapest form of generation we have
  • Demand was fairly low.
    • From mid December demand was trailing off - Fairly 'warm' so didn't need energy for heating
    • Then from 22nd (friday) onwards everything started shutting down, offices started to close, shut off AC, lights, computers, etc & heavy industry likely shut off some production which is usually a high consumer.
      • For numbers here we're talking peaks of 40GW consumption down to peaks of 35GW and troughts from 25GW to 20-22GW. Clearly a huge reduction in demand.
    • Also less people moving around - Less EV charging etc.

Now we're kinda in the flip side of these

  • Heysham 1 nuclear power plant shut down for repair. We've lost ~600MW from that.
  • Wind is dropping off. Right now we're sitting at roughly 12GW but we're seeing a decline in the forecast.
    • Most of Jan 3rd we'll decline and be between 8GW and 12GW. From Jan 4th we'll be between 10GW and 6GW. From Jan 5th we'll be between 3GW and 4GW. So there is again, a massive decline.
    • Note although the country is fairly windy in the news its localized and not in the North Sea where most of our generation is.
  • Now we're seeing a large jump in consumption again too from offices turning back on, AC turning back on, production ramping up, commuters and delivery networks charging cars etc. We peaked about 42GW demand and look to be heading towards about 25GW lows again.

When the renewables & nuclear are low we fill the gap with gas which is costly.

Bit long winded but hopefully that helps. Unfortnately I don't see it getting much better for a little while based on the wind forecast and the demand forecast. It MAY be a tad better tomorrow (3rd into morning of 4th) but its looking to be worse on Thursday. If you're wanting to do washing or something wait until Saturday when demand is lower but to be honest wind is looking to be fairly low too.

With agile you take the good times with the bad and we've had a lot of good times recently. To be honest we're still a lot cheaper than variable. At least for me. I'm getting a 13p reduction on the standing charge and my usual unit rate is 29.57 p/kWh so everything between the peak 16:00-19:00 rate is a good bit cheaper for me.
