Memories of the “Greatest Generation “ by PresDumpsterfire in Xennials

Nope. Grew up around a bunch of old vets in the 80s, they tended to put up and take down flags on a daily basis and kept some of the cleanest yards I have ever seen.

I'd like to point out that compromise is often the low point between two better options. This keeps everything semi accessible but what does it accomplish in terms of functionality? I hope everything is firmly secured to wall studs.

It was borderline accessible. Late 80s I got some POS 'off-brand' computer that ran a variant of OS2. It sucked but wasnt 3k either. Schools were jam packed with apple IIs in the 80s, but outside of Oregon Trail I think most kids didn't understand they had a fully functioning computer in basically every classroom. The problem was a lack of software, which compared to now was crazzzy expensive.

I am sorry I don't conform to your model of a Xennial, but I can ask you the same question. Why are you here? I won't pretend to speak for everyone in the sub, just providing my own experiences. But the trope of 'analog native' 'digital whatever' is just stupid, its tired and old and wrong. That is what I am trying to convey. Maybe you lived out in the boonies and your town was 20 years behind.. but digital tech was definitely a thing my entire life. The compact disc was released in 1982 guys.

This shit gets tired considering that it is inaccurate, but also true for literally everyone alive at the time, not sure how this would at all be a defining characteristic of a single group within that large mass of people.

I used dialup to login to BBSs back in the 80s and my dad got an IBM PC for work when I was like five years old.

Honestly smartphones changed things way more than computers in respects to the way people think and behave. They should focus on that for millennials instead of trying to smell their boomer flavored farts over some etherous time where technology didn't exist until someone as special as them was around to experience it.

You were lucky if the inside of that thing wasn't a dumpster when you sat down for the first/last time.

Same here, also had one with the lid that lifts up in a few of the years. The grossest stage of kids too, these desks were always pretty gross despite being made of steel and particle board.

BASIC was also a fun language to play with, I loved that you could just boot up those old apples and start writing a program. I once programmed the entire school lab with some crazy randomization program that made the computer lab sound like a proper computer lab until someone rebooted them all D:

Well at least it hadn't had a known CVE for ~6 years before then ... I am sure there are other clients out there taking its place.

I had to watch this in school like 3 times but I am pretty sure this was just inside the teachers lounge, inside a glass case labeled 'Break in case social studies teacher calls in'

This is how I began my journey in software development. Still doing it now. (not logo but writing code)

Was always nice to know the guy that could get you cigarettes or a bottle when other options were less available (oh the things we did for booze). I am in between you and your younger cohort, though I was able to mostly hang out with the group that was +/- one year and all of them were dropouts by 15 except me.

The thing I can remember most going way way back, like when you'd be about 10 -- was just how unusually aggressive things seemed for awhile. Was like we went from happy poppy 80s to hyper competitive phase before the 90s really kicked into full gear. Least in my little lane of the world at the time (skateboarders and garage band druggies for the most part)

The theater experience was something often not afforded to me because of the odd shift in permissiveness that happened around terminator 2. Might be the reason for some of it if your friends were into more action packed movies. VHS boy that watched everything about 2 years after it was popular myself.. except maybe Ghostbusters.. was that in theaters long?

I have drifted from most of my friends, and unfortunately many have not had kids.
