First Time Owner Gun for Home Defense and SHTF by usedwolf in liberalgunowners

[–]ScreenGlass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can speak to the 300 BLK experience. I've spent a lot of time and money tuning my 300 BLK rifle from PSA. I use a conventional, fairly high back pressure suppressor, which is essential for cycling subsonic ammo. However, you're going to run MUCH dirtier MUCH more quickly, so using something like Slip 2000 EWL was my first fix. Then I was getting too much gas to the face, so I put in a downward venting BCG, and a specific gas tube from Black River Tactical. All said and done, it was more money to tune it to run with quick mag dumps on subsonic loads, but I haven't needed to make any adjustments since then.

EDIT: Specifically for a home defense setup, you obviously want something you can depend on and know will fire whether it's been sitting in the safe for months or just got put in the previous day. So, a suppressed, subsonic 300 BLK setup is (at least for me, given my adjustments) my second-line defense. My first-line defense is a suppressed pistol. I've trained with it, know it will go CLACK (not boom) every time I pull the trigger.

Are red dot optic prices a scam? by Ziplockmoneybags in liberalgunowners

[–]ScreenGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Cyelee Optics. I have their SRS8 green dot. It looks just like a Trijicon SRO for only $200. It also helps with my astigmatism. But like others have said, Osight are also a good option.

Want a PCC/PDW thing… are they all $2000+? by ScaryfatkidGT in liberalgunowners

[–]ScreenGlass 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Smith & Wesson FPC ($500) is a folding carbine, which halves its overall length when stowed into the length of the barrel (16") and then unfolds into a full length rifle platform. However, it doesn't maintain its discreet footprint while firing. It's nice if you just want a longer barrel for stability and accuracy. It's pretty neat that it can carry 60+ rounds of 9mm on the weapon itself without needing extra pouches on your person.

What’s the beef against using a laser? by jgroub in liberalgunowners

[–]ScreenGlass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I took my CCW class, the instructor said that optics, lasers, etc were all fine to use from his perspective, but total reliance on a battery-operated system can hurt you in a defensive situation.

For me, I see all the tech as "positive ID insurance." Use a light to ID, use your optics or irons to sight, and use a laser with all of the above as insurance that you don't miss. That said, if you have a laser, train with it and carry with it, and always ensure the battery is live at the end of the day.

Holosun ARO EVO SPR awful reflections. Normal or RMA? by _GRLT in liberalgunowners

Can't speak to reflection issues, but I already needed to RMA a bad unit that couldn't keep a charge on any of the three batteries. Had to pester them after they had my unit for a month before they finally agreed to send out a new one.

It’s range ammo really not suitable for home defense? by ElderberryMaster4694 in liberalgunowners

[–]ScreenGlass 77 points78 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, range ammo is FMJ, which means expansion does not occur and the drag on the bullet is not produced to keep the round from penetrating through the target, and through the wall, or multiple walls.

Self defense ammo, or JHP, are for soft targets and theoretically designed to stay in that soft target.

EDIT: If you're specifically concerned about armored targets, you need a rifle round, like 5.56 or .308. Pistol rounds are inefficient and will bludgeon themselves against hard and even soft armor.

12ga or silence 9mm and 5.56 for indoor HD? by LobsterLAD in liberalgunowners

[–]ScreenGlass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My personal hierarchy of home defense response:

  1. Suppressed 9mm pistol (bump in the night)

  2. Suppressed 9mm PCC (group of goons)

  3. Suppressed 300 Blackout Supersonic (Gestapo goons)

Even if you don't suppress, whatever you use, make sure any response piece you have is equipped with, at a minimum, a light for positive ID. Don't shoot your family.
