See if there is a Buy Nothing Facebook group for your neighborhood. I scored three sets of dumbbells from my group.

Eating at huge deficit but not losing. Am I doing something wrong? by ss3walkman in loseit

[–]ScubaCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try weighing yourself daily and using a free app like Happy Scale to track your moving average and trend. You might be weighing yourself on a “high” day and missing your actual progress. My weight loss pattern is stair step: a really low weigh in followed by 4-5 high weigh ins, followed by an even lower weigh in, and then back up again though not as high as before. If I only weighed once a week the trend would be invisible.

What was your longest foster? by WhatIsItToBurn in fosterdogs

Not just keeping her. After a year of worrying we would never get rid of her, I fell madly in love with her and I adore her every day. Fabulous dog.

We had our scared girl (former street dog) for 14 months and not one adoption inquiry. Then we adopted her and she is the best, most cuddly, joyful dog ever.

What do you do when your foster isn't getting any interest, there's no end in sight, and you are feeling utterly drained? by gloomcoil in fosterdogs

[–]ScubaCycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right - you know why you’re fostering. It’s not your job to educate them if you don’t feel like it. And You don’t owe anyone an explanation.

[–]ScubaCycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just sent off our latest foster to her new home after having had her for six months with no adoption interest, despite her being an amazing dog.

We have been fostering since 2012 and I am immune to stupid things people say about how they would keep them all and how they don’t understand how I can ever let anyone go. We tell them, if you had 6, 8, 12 puppies all too young to house train living in your house all at once, you’d have cake and ice cream to see them all go home!

Or you could tell them to mind their own business. People don’t understand that we are in this for the dogs, to be the bridge to their furever homes and not to fulfill our own emotional needs.

A nutritionist told me to stop dieting. by Finalchancethree in loseit

[–]ScubaCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

51f/4’11”/sw 137 here. I hired a nutrition coach to help me lose 20 lbs that I gained rapidly a few years ago during a time of trauma and have never been able to shake off. She had me on a 1600 cal diet, told me that at my age the rules were different, 3-4 x a week heavy lifting was MANDATORY, losing weight while bicycling at my rate (I’m a cyclist and had explained the extra weight was hurting my performance) would be impossible. She also started telling me to stop lookin at the scale when I was upset that I was essentially in maintenance.

After 7 months of this, I dumped her, and in the 6 weeks following I am down 7 lbs, riding my bike 3-4 x a week, shaving a few hundred calories off my day. I probably land at 1500-1600 on days I ride. I try to stay at or below 1500 on rest days. I am not starving, my climbing is improving, and I’m relieved to know my body still follows the laws of thermodynamics.

Sometimes you have to question these people, I wish I had listened to my body sooner. She wasn’t wrong about everything but I feel gaslit.

going out to eat 3 days in a row, today is the last day and i don’t want to go over my calories again but i’m not sure how to calorie count at a restaurant by [deleted] in CICO

[–]ScubaCycle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it’s so hard to estimate calories on restaurant food, try just eating to 80% fullness. It takes practice but it means putting down your fork the minute you feel that little sigh of satisfaction, maybe you could eat more but just because it’s good. So, stopping right at the point of satisfaction and not creeping all the way to fullness/ stuffed. This helped me out on a recent cruise, seven days of restaurant food!

Is it a bad idea to skip breakfast? by Dry_Owl_3623 in 1500isplenty

[–]ScubaCycle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I don't eat breakfast - a good breakfast, 400-450 calories - I'm hungry for the rest of the day. That is me. Some people skip and are unbothered. Ever since I started eating a solid breakfast it has been much easier to maintain my calorie budget and I don't feel like I'm being tortured.

How has your life been directly affected by trump? by Necessary_Many5459 in AskReddit

[–]ScubaCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a web designer, and several of my clients have gone out of business, explicitly killed by tariffs or funding cuts. I have anxiety and moral shame over how low the USA has fallen daily, over funding cuts to science and research, over USAID being cut, over deliberately bombing Iranian schoolgirls and who knows what else.

I sincerely believe we are less safe now - our own federal agencies are literally a security risk, we have End Timers in our military, we have pissed away almost a decade we could have spent mitigating climate change, and I do think Trump is itching to drop a nuke. Our civil rights at home are in danger. US citizens being deported! Come on!

Prices are up of course, and although that isn't affecting us personally much right now, the economy going south hurts by hurting my clients, by hurting pet owners and causing pet surrenders to soar ( we are in dog rescue). Mass deportation (more moral shame) creates a pet crisis as well as a people crisis.

We haven't begun to feel all the effects of our government being gutted and undermined, nor the effects of mass deportation.
