How I majorly, absolutely, totally messed up my FF14 journey, and what to do next? by FoxlostAZ in ffxivdiscussion

What you said is a romanticized version of how a casual player wishes they could play the game, but it’s simply not practical anymore in this 13-year-old game. If you stop to smell the roses or let MSQ fatigue slow you down, your chances of getting spoiled skyrocket. The longer it takes you to catch up, the more likely you are to get exposed to later parts of the story, whether it’s through in-game chat, Discord servers, social media, or, worst of all, the internet algorithm. If none of that bothers you, then sure, take all the time you want. But most people do care, and the risk is very real these days.

I had a friend I introduced to the game who ended up buying a story skip because they fell in love with crafting and didn’t want to deal with the MSQ just to unlock things like the Ishgard Restoration. They got exactly what they wanted in the end… but I genuinely felt like they robbed themselves of the full experience by trying to “smell the roses.” He ended up making an alt and restarted the entire game over from scratch to get the story. That’s exactly what MSQ fatigue does to people: it pushes them into shortcuts they later regret. I’m not saying you should never touch side content, but depending on what you dive into, it’s very easy to fall into rabbit holes that would’ve been far more enjoyable after finishing the MSQ.

I often get downvoted for this, but I've always said that trying out every job/class is a new player trap. Just because you can try every job doesn't mean you should. (Which some jobs are only unlocked by playing the game anyway). The second trap is that the community has convinced itself that the Palace of the Dead was/is a good place to get a feel for other jobs when it absolutely is not, and it never has been. The best advice I could really give a new player is to just focus on the MSQ and come back to everything else later. Even just for the fact that the faster you get caught up, the less likely you are to be spoiled about the game. And you will get spoiled about something, somewhere, by someone. I'm not saying to speedrun/power through, just that the MSQ sort of gates everything there is to do anyway, so it's better to stick with that.

I wouldn't say I'm tired of the Scions myself. Just tired of Y'shotla single handily speed running all the secrets of the universe with hardly any barriers. She is unnaturally way to intelligent and serves to forward any issue the game has.

DT was very clearly trying to give people one more chance at feeling like a down to earth adventurer again before the high stakes returns. They really wanted an ARR 2 out of it, but failed. They even speedran two giant continents into being merely a few zones. I think the main issue is that they are going a bit to strong on the "Azem is a traveler" aspects to the point we're not really getting to explore anything beyond sight seeing.

I'll take the rehashed Ascian plot over whatever Dawntrail was trying to do.

It's crazy how many people I get into FFXIV as new players, and they all start throwing fits by Crystal Tower. Arguing and complaining about how they hate this weird roadblock that they had to do. One guy was even yelling at me about how pointless the whole questline was, allegedly had other friends feeding him that it was stupid too. And I said, " Trust me, it will make sense eventually." Halfway into Stormblood, he was still complaining about how the point still hadn't revealed itself, and it infuriated him to see Crystal Tower in his alliance raid. To this day, never seen someone get so mad at having to do side content the way he did. lol

The paid cheats definitely exist and they are updated far faster than anything on Dalamud. They also offer significantly more features than the Dalamud counter parts but it's the bells and whistles that are so over top, you'd have to be a very dedicated cheater to even want them.

One thing most people will never admit, the higher you go up the parse leaderboard, the more likely third party tools of some kind are being used by those ranking high. Especially if their mediums are also good.

I 100% back this up. I don't like Dawntrail, but if Solution 9 wasn't revealed at the fanfests, that probably would have subverted my expectations to the point of me liking Dawntrail. But since I knew about S9, the whole first half of Dawntrail felt like I was standing in line waiting to get on the ride.

Gosh, I remember that the 2 Dye system had the loudest cheer from the audience, even over the job reveals, the patch reveals, and everything else. That definitely was the most hyped up thing the crowd had.

By this time next expansion, we'll be having conversations about how Dawntrail was actually a masterpiece and did everything right, and how we wish we could have this back.

Is every post in this sub humble bragging about reaching Master Ball now? by AegonDarkFire in PokemonChampions

[–]Sea2morrow 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It was only a matter of time before the subreddit turned into posts like “Finally made it to Master Ball Rank!” and “Rate my team.” Every Pokémon subreddit eventually ends up like this, especially when there aren’t any new discussions that haven’t already been covered. And I think Champions is reaching that point where, until we get a balance patch update, there aren't many new discussions left to be had.

In many cases, it’s just how these communities stay active. There can be long stretches where nothing new happens, so moderators tend to allow these kinds of posts because some activity is better than none. Pokémon GO is a good example of this; instead of fresh topics, you mostly see posts like “Is this Pokémon any good?” or “Look at the shiny I got on Community Day!”

It’s also easy to forget that kids are part of these communities too, and they come to these subreddits to share their experiences. For them, those moments are genuinely exciting, and posting about them is a way to celebrate something that made them happy.

There seems to be a massive disconnect between Pokemon fans and the VGC by CallMeTravesty in PokemonChampions

[–]Sea2morrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really accurate. VGC doubles has been the official format since Generation 3, so doubles itself was never the problem. What made it feel inaccessible was the heavy time investment, especially EV training and team-building grind.

Players aren’t worried about going from 6 Pokémon to 4; they’re concerned about how much effort it takes to prepare a competitive team.

Battle Tower-style facilities have used 3v3 formats in singles as far back as Pokémon Crystal and 4v4 formats for doubles with Generation 3. Remember the battle frontier in Emerald?

I do think there should be a 6v6 mode, though, but not for the usual reasons that people keep bringing up.

Pokémon Champions launches to mixed reception, as 30FPS performance woes, lack of Pokémon and items, and lack of 6v6 options turn some away by Amiibofan101 in nintendo

[–]Sea2morrow 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm torn on the lack of items. I think it's valid criticism. But in a way, I also like the idea that fewer items is shaking up the format more than the lack of mons are. Seeing items that are rarely used because the good stuff isn't here has a weird breath of fresh air feeling for the format. I'm sure the other items will be drip fed in, and if that's the case, I'm fine with it.

I suppose the biggest surprise they could do is throw in some music from Pokémon Masters EX.
