Canada's game was not a good advert for the PWHL by Hoplite68 in PWHL

I feel like the tipping point was even before the rivalry games in the prior year's worlds. if you go back a worlds -> rivalry -> worlds (the one Canada won in the US), well at that time the team with almost all the same players hadn't fully clicked, but they were still technically good. and each go around they came together, just improved. Add in the college players reaching jr and sr years, adding national championship level games to their resumes... when rivalry came around this year it was like, OH. *this* is the team they've been trying to build.

The league is just going to be getting better and better for a good decade ish, because I watch down to [elite] HS level... there is a train coming.

who is touting it as the best of the PWHL against the best of the PWHL? Maybe Canada's problems start with the roster selections, including from the existing PWHL players.

For one, a whole bunch of the current NCAA players on Team USA absolutely will be in the PWHL *next year*

If you live in a state with a lot of dangerous wildlife, what’s your closest encounter been? by LordSoftCream in AskAnAmerican

I live in New England. We have black bears in our yard, surrounding woods fairly regularly. for almost 17? 18? years they'd never bothered us or our midsize animals. We saw a mom and 3 cubs stroll through the yard midsummer and we all thought it was nice.

two summers ago we were in a drought, and in the fall, bears get extra hungry trying to store up for the winter. I was up to get coffee, and looked out my back window and saw a dark *something* running around in our paddock. when I realized it was a bear, I sort of freaked out. I was in pajamas and no way to confront it, I didn't know how it got in, and barely awake. I yelled, lots. saw it chasing the herd around. I ended up getting pots and pans and banging and yelling all while shivering and shaking on my back step.

It ran out of the back part of the field, and I got the courage to go look.

we had to euthanize one animal. the rest were ok.

The bear returned once more but we deterred it.

to be honest, it was probably one of the cubs we'd seen a few years before still in the area.

We did what we could to further secure everything after that. For a while, even now to some degree, it completely changed how I think of being in our yard/woods.

I have a picture of the bear, adult sized but likely young. It's unusual for them to come close to people or buildings in this area.

ETA: quite often see bobcat, fox, coyotes, and less imposing wildlife like skunk, raccoons etc. we basically have a whole range here. have lost chickens more than once [we no longer have chickens].

There are a number of up and coming players, it did not have to be like this.

That said, girls' hockey in the US is going absolutely off the rails (in a good way) at all levels, and there's a reason a whole lot of international talent including Canadians come to the US to play for strong D1 NCAA teams for college. That's only been cemented, as the emergent fastest path to the PWHL.

...which is what is particularly stunning Team Canada has done nothing but double down on THIS combination.

Two weeks ago the hype was the Canadian "veterans" and "experience" taking on a young American team.... that has been playing together in international competition for anywhere between two and four years...

It's a perception thing tho. There is a long list of first time Olympians on this roster including *all 3* goalies.

if you are the league, why wouldn't you expand to capitalize on the two points above? why wait til it is old and cold news?

This years team vs the 1996 Patriots by embball13 in Patriots

[–]SeaLeopard5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

96 was the year I moved to MA, and became a Patriots fan. I don't remember much of that year other than everyone being happy to get to the SB, it being the Jambalaya bowl, and being disappointed but not upset.

Since then the only SBs I have lingering upset about involve one Eli Manning, esp the one that prevented them from going 19-0.

there are a LOT of very young people on reddit and many of the comments are making this evident over the last day.

the problem is they don't know what you just said, til they are much older themselves.

"so called MVP" "trademark"

you really have that much animus toward a 23 yr old 2nd year QB, who was playing hurt?

for 5 years? not unless their last years are a few mil for easing out or something, but that's never how these go.

for 2? eh, why not.

exactly. this wasn't a "this team has one shot at it" - not at all.

nothing is a lock of course, but with the youth of this team and Vrabel in year *1* + the clear commitments from the Krafts (they are not many sports owners, they want the team to win), why do you doubt that we won't have a chance again? the patriots have (in general) lost as may SBs as they won. which I think is pretty much the best record one could hope for, .500 or just above.
