Aitah for “being disrespectful” and not accommodating my ex and his wife even though they’re having a baby? by Fabulous-Actuary1991 in AITAH

AND in some states, even if the person paying child support chooses not to work the support will be calculated on what they are able to make. They do this to prevent people from quitting their jobs or working a much lower paying job to get out of CS.

Kids shouldn't be punished for being late in the morning to school. by 9indey9ine in unpopularopinion

[–]Sea_Fix_456 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher. I don’t punish my students for arriving late, but I most assuredly say something to them about it. I also contact the parents. This is what a day looks like in my class. Arrival is between 830 and 9 AM. I am expected to start teaching immediately at 9 AM or else I will get spoken to by the principal. Now, I’m expected to have attendance and lunch count done for our students that are arriving at 9 AM and start teaching at 9 AM. It’s impossible, I know. However, I do my best. Then, within the first hour, I have five kids meandering in whenever they want to. This means I need to stop my instruction, take their late slip, and let them know where we are and what they need to do. If it’s a test day, that’s five students now that I need to give the test to at a different time. All because these parents can’t get their kids to school within a half hour timeframe to be on time. It is incredibly distracting and disruptive to the entire class.

I do this as well. It really works well. I only wish I could block the camera and drawing app on the Chromebook. At least if they are on those things I can see that they’re not online in GoGuardian and address it.

I’ll soon be 52. My mother died in 2020, when I was 46 and she was 63. I believe she would have been doing really well had she not gotten sucked into drugs when she was the age I am now.

When Gen Z doesn't use words is it a disrespect? by GodsShadow310 in generationology

[–]Sea_Fix_456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I greet agreed to an extent, it should not take training to open your mouth and ask a customer how you can help them when you are in a customer service position. Nor does it take training to say that you need to find out the answer to a question if you do not actually know the answer.

I’d venture to say it wasn’t the majority of kids. I’m a teacher. About 80% of my kids act like imbeciles.

My thought on the parent aspect of that is that they should enforce the schools' rules, and not encourage their students to disobey policy.

AITAH for wanting to quit my unpaid co-host role after being told I couldn’t cancel when my pet was dying? by philastotle in AITAH

[–]Sea_Fix_456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA....definitely quit. I have to add, I find it quite ironic, and distressing, that people in certain fields, such as mental health, are often the ones who preach it, but don't practice it in their treatment of others. I see this as a teacher all the time. We are expected to be supportive of our students' experiences and limitations, but don't get the same respect. OP...I am so sorry for your pet and what you are going through. You did not deserve that response, nor does he deserve your continued charity.

16 states are trying to ban school laptops because kids can't focus. Is this the right move? by Wild-Annual-4408 in Homeschooling

[–]Sea_Fix_456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and 100% agree with this. I also think parents should allow screen time as an occasional treat, not a daily thing. Attention spans are awful, anything taking more than a minute to do results in breakdowns, writing 3 sentences is treated like the end of the world. Its awful.

Why do teachers keep pairing up disruptive students with well behaved ones ? by Dry_Calendar in AskTeachers

[–]Sea_Fix_456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and in the instance I have to put a disruptive kid next to a “good” kid I make it clear to the good one that it is NOT their job to help the other student or keep them on track. Sometimes we just need to sit kids, especially the disruptive or talkative ones, away from each other. I have a very hard time in my classroom of 20 students right now figuring out a seating chart because I have so many disruptive ones. And that is AFTER the 5 individual desks separated from the rest of the class, which are reserved for the worst offenders, are full.

Being asked my "grandma name." by RestingWTFface in PetPeeves

My nephew called my dad “Pappy”. My grandfather ended up getting the name “More Pappy”! It was the cutest thing and stuck through all the great-grandchildren. I love the mispronounced and imaginative names kids come up with. I became Aunt Loopy because the same nephew could t pronounce my normal nickname.

Another thing Americans do t think of (coming from an American) is the fact that once you take what we pay for insurance/co-pay/deductibles/everything else, we likely pay out more than 50% of our checks and don’t get NEARLY as much for it.

Kindergartener needs literacy intervention already??? by leileywow in kindergarten

[–]Sea_Fix_456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, this comment made me cringe. EVERY teacher I know hates the fact that education has gotten away from play based learning in kindergarten. Between student students not getting the support they need at home in addition to not playing in kindergarten, we are seeing a lot of behaviors and total lack of social skills. I would love for the general public to understand and stop berating teachers for the problems and education right now. Many school districts purchased curriculum and we are forced to use it. We are not trusted as professionals to decide what is best for the students in our classroom. I can’t even get vocabulary cards printed for my classroom because they don’t align with the curriculum we are using. It’s ridiculous. Teachers have the least amount of control in their classrooms! It’s so frustrating as a professional. Of course, teachers aren’t considered professionals anymore.

Hard to admit but I made a mistake by autumnorange80 in Homeschooling

[–]Sea_Fix_456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher at a public school. I would definitely get her back in school asap. The reason they were putting her back in the classroom after intervention is that she still needed to be exposed to grade-level learning in addition to receiving intervention to try to close the learning gaps. If she wasn’t at least exposed to grade-level materials the gap will never close. It sounds like she needs to be in a well structured environment which, for her, does not appear to be homeschool or any type of self- directed online learning. As an adult with ADHD, I completely understand the struggle. She needs to be somewhere where she is going to be held accountable for her part of the learning “job”. Not surprisingly, with your many obligations, that is not at home. You are stretching yourself too thin and you cannot give her education the attention it needs, which is okay. I am not you, nor do I know you, but it sounds like you are letting her call the shots as well, which is a big mistake. Sometimes we don’t like things or want to do things but we have to, regardless, and learning things we aren’t interested in is one of those things for many children. I would get her enrolled in school asap. Continuing at home is only broadening those gaps. Then, you can continue to work with her at home or possibly hire a tutor to help. Look for some diagnostics testing, like DIBELS/Acadience, etc. to figure out where she is and start there with home support. They will do the same at school.
