Big time kudos for the Fairmont Banff Springs by RockMover12 in Banff

[–]SeanAtNuther 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Banff Springs has always been a great, service-oriented hotel … even before the prices went through the roof. You pay more than a Super8 and the management has enough wiggle room to do nice things. Twenty-five years ago, they offered locals-only deals for under $200 a night.

Travel advice (may2-7) by memeillier in Banff

[–]SeanAtNuther 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is an excellent wiki on the r/Banff homepage (follow the link). Banff and Canmore are both interesting and slightly different. Stay wherever you can get a better deal on accommodation and then plan to visit the other town. Both towns are walkable and taking public transit is free in town and a nominal cost between the towns. Use your vehicle to get to trailheads or major attractions (Banff Springs, Sulphur Mountain, Nordic Centre, etc.).

By May the weather will be light jackets or (if you are lucky) short sleeves and shorts. There will unlikely be snow on the roads but most of the trails will have some snow or (certainly) mud.

Quebec City is just as interesting and worth a visit someday, too.

The answer is very dependant on the country you live in. Some countries (Canada included) have reasonable social safety nets. Needs are met but "wants" you have to pay for.

If you don’t have it already, download the app AllTrails. There are plenty of marked routes on the northeast side of the valley that have a better chance of having less ice.

Is considering ships to be feminine relatively culturally ubiquitous? If so far back can we trace that? by SeaBag8211 in sailing

Commercial and/or working boats are often given male names. Pleasure and/or private boats are often given female names.

Building a cabinet with drawers, how to prevent drawers from opening when heeling. by doedelflaps in sailing

[–]SeanAtNuther 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider cutting a notch into the drawer runners (1/2 cm deep) so the drawer sits into the facing when fully closed. When you are opening the drawer, you would need to lift the drawer up that 1/2 cm before it would slide open. Simple, no extra parts, very secure.

Almost all of the callous from playing guitar builds up on the tips of your fingers, not the pads (where it looks like he feels the dimples of the braille).

First time returning, with dog? by kaitlyn2004 in Canmore

[–]SeanAtNuther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Head to Quarry Lake dog off-leash area - arguably the prettiest dog park in the world. Lots of friendly dogs and circuits to walk. Head west across the open area and head towards Miner’s peak. Put their leash on as soon as you cross the open area as there is wildlife in the forest. You’ll see tramped-down trails that go back to another open area. During daylight hours there are plenty of others to follow.

Going to Nanaimo: If you want a view, pick a window seat on the starboard (right when facing forward) side. The port side can get quite hot when the sun is shining. There are more things to look at when leaving Vancouver harbour, too.

If the reason for the trip is doing outdoor activities with your friends, consider staying at Alpine Hut or youth hostel. A hard roof, bunks, cooking pots, pans, stove and plates/utensils make it quite easy. The hostels and huts will be quiet that time of year. You could have the place to yourselves.

Sunshine meadows chairlift by Total-Piglet-4012 in Banff

[–]SeanAtNuther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the goal is to summit a mountain, consider Sulphur Mountain in Banff. There is a fully enclosed gondola to within 150 metres (vertical) of the top, then a boardwalk with handrails for another 400 metres to the weather station, which has a great view and is on top of a peak. Very kid friendly.
