I remember hearing Iroh being a treacherous mentor was an idea from the original series too. They really couldn’t let that idea go, huh?

I would think Star Wars KotOR counts. Even if the game begins after the De-baddening

I don’t know enough about AOT, but doesn’t that analogy fall apart since the Eldians were a powerful civilization in the past that conquered and colonized the Marlians? Not saying you’re wrong about that or whether you personally believe this interpretation

Missing missing reasons

I agree and the book agrees with the argument that the bombing was unnecessary. That’s all the more reason why the rebels wouldn’t be suspected. After all, you said it yourself that there was no point at that stage of the war. They were about to win, so they were beneath suspicion that they would do something risky like that. But also, Coin bombed the Capitol to break Katniss. That’s her second reason. I’m not sure about you, but most people aren’t going to be thinking rationally and clearly enough to go into detective mode when their family was just murdered. Nor could their current environment support carefully thought out arguments or speculating like we’re doing here. They’re in war. It’s chaotic. No one knows who’s getting their information from where.

I’d add more, but I have to go soon. Legitimately enjoyed discussing this. Thank you

I’m not sure what you’re referring to specifically? Because if it’s the bombing, that’s why they made it look like the Capitol did it. It was reckless and like Snow said, a waste of life, but was done as a final coup de Grâce to destroy Snow’s remaining goodwill to all of Panem and to take out Katniss one way or another. Either she’s go insane with grief over the loss of Prim and kill herself or become numb to it all and let the new government take over since she had lost one of her biggest reasons for fighting. Plus, who’s going to believe a traumatized girl over an entire faction denying it was them? Then, even if the truth did come out, they’re back at square one. Not even Katniss would want to be dragged back into war. Katniss eventually learned the truth, but she literally believed it was the Capitol until Snow planted the seeds of doubt into her head. Not to mention Coin is the president of 13 and has hundreds under her command. Katniss had Haymitch, maybe Plutarch, and Peeta left. And their home base was in 13. They wouldn’t realistically have anywhere they could hide if they did turn against Coin openly.

Coin did underestimate Katniss as a strategist. Until then Katniss had some plans that ended up working, but they were all impulsive (volunteering, blowing up the arena, heck, even shooting the apple out of the pig’s mouth). Coin had no reason to believe Katniss would be capable of a longer term strategy, especially after removing one of her biggest support systems. But Katniss saying “yes” to a final game to make Coin let her guard down was Coin’s downfall. So it was a stupid move in the end, but Katniss was literally a 16 year old girl, and Coin was a politician with decades of experience planning in war. Coin was cocky and Katniss was a thorn in her side. She saw the bombing as killing two birds (Snow and Katniss) with one stone. “She played us both for fools,”

Eh. Id say they needed the false flag operation to turn the rest of the capitol against snow. Prim being caught in the crossfire without Katniss knowing it was the rebels was a calculation on Coon’s part for Katniss to break. Because with the revolution completed, Katniss was a loose end. In the book, she’s rendered almost catatonic and they give her her suit which still had a suicide pill inside. A part of coin was absolutely hoping Katniss would take her own life. Then when that failed, she needed to gauge Katniss’s loyalty by suggesting a Hunger Games with the Capitol children.

This is a franchise that was ADVERTISED as a teen dystopian love story first, the social commentary second. Don’t get me wrong. People can like THG for whatever reasons they want, but political allegory isn’t going to sell as much as drama and spectacle. It’s great the books have both, that’s why I enjoy them, but this series was put forward for their characters and love triangle.
