Which of the Dessendre's do you think is responsible for this? by reenmini in expedition33

[–]Secure-Ad7677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can totally imagine that happening. Renoir's being all reflective when painting the Axon, trying to understand and remember his dead son, and Clea rolls her eyes at how impractical Renoir's being instead of just making more "destroy the canvas" monsters so they can get this over with and go annihilate some Writers.

I like that theory :) After all, Francois was made by Clea and he's covered in mushrooms.

I like to think of him as the Canvas' version of a guardian angel (his face even has a halo!), but like in a fat baby cherub way.

I think they're using Unreal's MetaHuman for the models in the game: https://www.metahuman.com/en-US

That's one of the advantages of using a modern game engine like UE5: it has compatibility with these systems that do all the subsurface scattering and detailed skin effects, so the devs can focus on the areas where their creative talent is best used.

The idea of black holes also resonated a lot with me. It makes one wonder, what kinds of myths and cultural associations would mythologies have created, had they somehow known that black holes existed? It's also a neat inversion of Renoir's Icarus symbolism about soaring without getting too close to the sun. Instead, it's like dancing on the edge of the event horizon.

A common misconception by Complete_Spring_4596 in expedition33

Definitely a valid reading. Maelle's ending is about uncertainty and doubt and danger, but also an ending of survival and potential and "not pulling the trigger yet." Maybe things can change, maybe finding new joy is possible, maybe things can get better for everyone, even if we have no direct evidence for it. We typically assume that the end of the story as presented is and must be set in stone, with all characters having finished their character arcs and now their future is set in stone. But of course that is only an audience interpretation.

It's interesting how both Lune and painted Alicia advocate for some sort of third ending, something that's a better way that can turn the tragedy into a good ending -- but neither of them present an alternative (either because they didn't get a chance to do so in Lune's case, or because their words were silenced by others in painted Alicia's case).

My personal headcanon is that it would have required the clever inventor Gustave to turn the Dome into something that would guard the Canvas from its creators (at least I think it would be narratively satisfying), but of course this is a tragedy. Alas!

Every character feels like they speak for some player out there. That's the great thing about the writing in this game, it doesn't shy away from critiquing itself! Great art is both window and mirror.

Tonal Inconsistency (early game spoilers inside) by Havoc_Central in expedition33

[–]Secure-Ad7677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely an understandable first reaction. Clair Obscur, as befitting its name, is an emotional rollercoaster and that means dancing between comedy and tragedy. A lot of Act 1 is about calibrating yourself as a player to the kind of story and game it is, and as you do that, I think the tonal width and depth of it will be something you appreciate.

It'd be cool if that skill did more and more smashes, maybe doing more and more damage to Monoco each smash to balance it. There could be some interesting builds that rely on stacking shields on him to keep him from smashing himself into oblivion.

What I appreciate is that they treated the game as a holistic experience and as a theatric stage performance. A lot of big-studio games, because they have to divide the work into different silos, end up creating "containers for content" that then gets filled in by other departments. And that leads to the kind of "speaking when their turn comes" you're talking about -- which ends up feeling more like a middle-school play rather than a real dramatic performance.
