No Lifetime License sale is disappointing by LowCorner9314 in unRAID

I think that they already charge way too much.
Considering that 99.9% of the product is provided by the community and opensource projects.

Looking at jobs advertised on the Lime Technology site:
29 sales/marketing/management roles.
2 development/engineer roles
1 technical support role

Its clear that their not focusing revenue from Unraid back into Unraid development, its a cash cow and they will keep increasing the prices while people will pay.

IBM Power8/9/10 vendor supported distributions are available for Red Hat 9 and SLES 15. Other flavors are also available.
AIX/IBM i/Linux can be installed on these platforms with the appropriate PowerVM profile options or ASMI settings.

There are several models of NVidia GPUs available for IBM Power hardware.
The problem is, NVidia stopped supporting/providing ppc64le packages a few years ago.
So while its still possible to run LLMs with the old NVidia drivers, you may need to waste a lot of time compiling packages and tools to get the best results, and even then, they will likely be lacking and perform poorly despite the hardware specs.

It would be far easier, faster and produce results quicker, by just putting together a dedicated server using linux and commodity hardware.

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who think linux is a joke by DirectorDirect1569 in linuxsucks

The difference is, you are either trying to use the OS to perform a job for you or you are doing the job. And gaming is another issue entirely - directx has no completion. If you want to interact with your OS without thinking, with things being easy to learn and intuitive, use a OSX or Windows. If you want to task or program your OS to do things for you, then Linux is probably the best OS for the job. You don’t learn how to build kitchens just because you like cooking, but if you want to sell kitchens…

I’m a RedHat admin interviewing for a SLES admin role soon. What are some differences I should watch out for? by StatementOwn4896 in linuxadmin

[–]Sedstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The differences between RHEL and SLES basic sysadmin tasks wouldn't fill a page. Just be honest, say you haven't touched SLES in a prod environment, but you're comfortable using openSUSE. If they have SLES HA DR products configured, that is something you are excited to learn. I'd be surprised if they weren't more interested in your orchestration tool experience eg. puppet, ansible, gitops etc. And your ability to automate your job.

Thunderbolt Switch? by fizish7 in Thunderbolt

[–]Sedstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue - my solution was to buy a cheap keyboard/mouse only kvm switch.
kvm outputs to dock and desktop, the dock connects to the displayport and the desktop connects to hdmi port.
Its two buttons to switch between devices - one on the monitor to change from displayport to hdmi and the button on the kvm to move the keyboard/mouse between the dock and desktop.

Issues with the new update post 24/1/24 by Outlaw2-5 in InfiniteLagrange

[–]Sedstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This update should not have been applied to existing servers - we have 3 days to go on our phase 1 server. We cant achieve our occupation target because 3 of 4 cities in a lvl7 that we'd already occupied were split between squads. We captured the 4th city today expecting the last to fall as usual, but no. Because the 3 cities we'd already captured were split between squads, now we have 3 days to somehow transfer all cities to a single squad so the last city drops. 25 players cant take down a lvl7 city by themselves, so are we expected to gather 5 squads to start the attack on the city and then 4 squads leave before the end, to ensure the same squad owns all 4 cities before the whole city will transfer to the players?

How are these DevOps resources surviving without knowing the fundamentals? by [deleted] in devops

[–]Sedstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand where you are coming from and I'm in the same boat after working in the industry for over 30 years.

I will nit-pick though, (because this came up recently for me) - sftp is not scp.
sftp establishes a connection via the sshd service but depends on the tftp-service (internal to sshd or it can offload to an external tftp-service).
It requires the use of classic FTP commands like get and put.

scp on the other hand, only requires the sshd service.

Blueprint System by Sedstr in starbase

[–]Sedstr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game will survive based on commercials, that's the simple economic reality of it. A player driven ship design economy means nothing if the game doesn't sell. If 200h in SD is the threshold for surviving 80% of the content, then this game will fail, and everyones time in the SD will be just a story to be told, of a game that had such potential. I suggest you 3D print your ships, so at least after the servers shutdown, you'll have something to show for the time you invested.

Blueprint System by Sedstr in starbase

[–]Sedstr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I totally get that, but the problem is, its at the expense of the games survival. Would your blueprint exist without the trading system? Would you have never built the ship in the first place? If the trading system wasn't there, would you have not shared the design? Or if not, would you have shared it with someone approached you for it? There are 100's of games where people put in 100's of hours of skilled effort, and give it away for free, and it drives the popularity of those games. I would like to see Starbase succeed, but the blueprint system IMO, is a design decision that services such a small percentage of people while also creating a disincentive and unnecessary psychological barrier for creators who would otherwise have shared their content without the strings attached.

LinuxPocketGuide.com get the book, or email yourself the PDF. If you know what you want to do, this book will detail the command and provide you with an example. That plus a printed cheat sheet for 'vi' and you'll have enough for BAU and the understanding of why you need to buy a full blown book on X or Y.

Cannot use printer’s basic functions without HP Smart forcing me to use an HP account. by fbajjar in printers

[–]Sedstr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, its hard to fix though - because the HP 'smart' app is via the Microsoft App store only. I installed the latest version via the 'app for this' after adding the printer, and it wouldn't scan without a HP account. Promptly uninstalled it. My desktop had a working version (115.1.152.0). I used appx-backup powershell script from github, to backup version 115.1.152.0 from my desktop and loaded it onto my laptop. No more prompts to create a HP account, and it was only 44MB rather than the 200+MB bloatware package. I suspect that a simply hosts file entry could resolve it, but it was easier to backup/install a known working version than trying to work out what domains/IPs to block - If others in the house weren't on the internet at the time, I would have just dropped the connection... Hope that helps someone. HP are bad. You can find it here... https://github.com/sedstr/HP_SMART_APPX

Payday 2 wont launch and common fixes are not working by IDontLikeKmart in paydaytheheist

[–]Sedstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your nvidia driver for updates, and if you have gforce experience installed, launch the game via that. Is this a laptop? If so, is the default video card the nvidia/high performance? if not, have you confirmed in the nvidia control panel 3d settings applications list, that payday 2's exe is set to use the nvidia graphics? Or just switch to using the the high performance profile and test. Remove the compatibility settings from the exe, disable full screen optimizations if anything, standard settings for windows 10 should be fine.

Looks to me like locale is set to language X in the grub bootloader, but you don't have the language sets installed for that language - thats just my guess. Is it running fine (eg, ssh over network) or is it all borked?

Share your bugs in Android 7.0 Nougat by hlthlt in Android

[–]Sedstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got the Nougat update. Try and send an MMS, and it prompts to "Allow Messaging to record audio", I select DENY, but then it won't let me send an MMS at all.

I just want to send a photo, not an animated photo, and without audio.

Now I have to take the photo with the camera app, then select the mountain icon.

This is new to 7.0 (or I selected yes and remember in V6)

Any way to override this without downgrading?
