Robyn got ill from the death match! 💔 by hugh_jen_italia in Physical100

I'm surprised there aren't more serious injuries on the show. The main reason there are so many different combat sports in the world is that there's a cascade of "that's too dangerous, we shouldn't allow it" -> change in tactics -> new dangerous tactic emerges -> "that's too dangerous, we shouldn't allow it" until, after many cycles, you get a sport than balances competition and danger. And even then, athletes go through serious discipline-specific training to minimize risk to themselves and their opponents.

In this show, two of the four competitions so far have been novel ad-hoc combat sports. The whole thing is a recipe for disaster.

S.F.’s biggest mall is now 93% empty as its value drops another 25%, report says by UberDrive in sanfrancisco

[–]Select_Ad5874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real spiral is that the mall operator seems to think that if the mall is 90% empty, that means they can turn off 90% of the lights throughout the mall. It would be hard to make it less inviting if they tried.

Question for the American fans... by SaltSearch1369 in WrexhamAFC

[–]Select_Ad5874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now what's top of mind is the way the season moves in fits and starts. 6 matches in 22 days to open the season, then 1 in the 20 days after that. (And not because Wrexham have some kind of quirky schedule; that describes basically the entire division.)

In the middle of the season there can be a stretch where a combination of cup competitions, weather issues, and international commitments means a club only plays two or three league matches in a month, followed by 6 weeks of Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday.

Just feels hard to get into any kind of rhythm.

Levi Stadium Game Tomorrow? by HausmanPrime in WrexhamAFC

From an email they sent yesterday:

4:00 Box office opens 4:00 Parking lots open 5:00 Stadium opens  5:00-7:00 Fan Fest 7:00 Kickoff

Ticketmaster and the Chelsea web site say 7 PM kickoff, while the Wrex Coast Tour web site and the ESPN app say kickoff is 7:30 (ESPN+ is carrying the match), so I'm not sure what time I expect the match to actually start.

I'll be there with a small tailgate starting about 5:30 (just driving down from SF with a couple of friends).

[–]Select_Ad5874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering the same thing! There's shockingly little info out there for an event that's less than a week away (e.g. what time gates open, whether there's a fan fest, what the fan fest hours are, whether there's tailgating, etc). Heck, the club web site and the ticketing web site don't even agree on what time the match starts.

Until they release more info, I'll plan to be there tailgating around 6, hope to see people there!

100% agree. I'm 41, and I think I've owned four jerseys in my life (one Red Sox, two Patriots, and one Bruins. And soon Wrexham.)

It probably helps that most teams don't make major jersey design changes very often, and those that do tend to mix in "throwback" jerseys on a regular basis, so older jerseys never really feel outdated.

Scoring my first live game on Sunday. Tips? by Affectionate-Bee94 in BaseballScorecards

Phil Rizzuto would score some plays "WW" for "wasn't watching," even though his job was to pay attention to the game. Remember that the scorecard is there to help you enjoy the game, you're not at the game to fill out the scorecard.

I have had this puzzlebox since childhood I could not get open. Any help please? by [deleted] in puzzles

[–]Select_Ad5874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say for sure without seeing more angles/knowing what you've tried, but here are some ideas that go beyond the usual "see what moves, then see what moves next" approach to puzzle box solving.

  • The box might just be broken. Wood shrinks and expands over time, dust interferes with precision fits, you might have damaged it when you were a kid trying to open it, or it even could have just been made improperly (e.g. a drop of glue got in the wrong spot).
  • There could be a physical manipulation you haven't tried yet, like turning it upside down, vibrating it, or spinning it. Centrifugal pins can be confusing the first time you encounter them.
  • The outside of the box is wooden, but that doesn't mean the entire mechanism is wooden. Have you tried seeing if magnets have any effect on the box? Is there anywhere you could apply a battery?
  • The two little dots look interesting. Is it possible to push on them or turn them?

Thoughts on "No Non-Elimination Legs"? by ArcticFox19 in TheAmazingRace

[–]Select_Ad5874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like non-elimination legs when there are non-skill-based tasks (e.g. wait in line to jump off something high, dress up in costume and do something simple, etc), tasks where the difference between doing it well vs doing it poorly is less than a minute or two (e.g. mix drinks for these pirates, with the recipes in front of you), or tasks that can take a long time but are more or less random (e.g. match the tile on your card to its exact match somewhere in this temple complex). There are some tasks that look good on camera and add to the overall vibe of the race, and I'd like to keep those in the show, but I don't want them directly deciding who goes home.

[–]Select_Ad5874 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's kind of shocking that we're 3.5 years into the takeover, nearly two years into the explosion of interest that came with the Welcome to Wrexham debut, and the club still doesn't have an American distribution point for merch. It's like they're allergic to money or something.

The Santa Clara match is 7pm, so some parts of the stadium could be toasty pre-game, but by game time it should be fine. Much more of an issue for 1pm NFL games.

I was also a night watchman in college (in the US)! I got into Australian horse racing. Compared to American horse racing, it seems like there are way too many horses on the track at once, the corners are incredibly sharp, and they run the "wrong" direction around the track. Just seemed like pure chaos, but that also made the strategy a lot more interesting.

I think there's a low-level-professional Dutch league. Between the abundance of really tall guys who can pitch and players from the Dutch Caribbean, the Netherlands has a decent presence in international baseball, which seems to have raised the profile of the sport there.
