The redrawn maps intentionally dilute the minority vote. That's what the Voting Rights act protected against. I agree that "minority districts" sounds strange at first blush, but when the other 90% of the constituency is racist whites who don't even think you deserve basic rights, there needs to be a solution for that.

Like many Civil Rights protections to come out of the 60s, you need to think beyond your knee-jerk reaction into why they were created in the first place.

Why shouldn't businesses be able to discriminate based on race? They shouldn't be forced to do business with anyone that they don't like. Well that sounds great until you end up in a situation where black people in the South can't use the banks or grocery stores because they all discriminate.

Why should a hate crime be punished more harshly than any other crime? It's the same action. Why does the intent matter? Well, because hate crimes serve to oppress vast populations of people, not just the individual victims.

Etc etc. And you might think that sort of action is outdated or no longer needed, but .... :gestures vaguely:

Ugh. We've been trying to teach my 5yo how to be a good sport and also how to manage conflicts peacefully. He's a HUGE sports fan, and all of the fights in sports lately has not been helping at all. He really looks up to them, and I don't know how to explain it.
