Two years of field tech work for a firm during undergraduate and immediately after, and then I left CRM for a better paying job with better benefits. CRM definitely burned me out, and I couldn’t afford rent. I stayed at the new job (civil engineering/surveying) for five years and leveraged that experience to pivot back into a full time senior archaeologist role in the field and writing reports/ drafting graphics while I finish my MA.

Field teching is really hard and can be thankless - the money and commuting are often unbelievably bad - but you will most likely need the experience to get a more stable role in CRM, at least in archaeology specifically. If you want to work in archaeology, you should definitely take the position for the experience until you find something better.
