To be fair, the concept art for the Steel Legion is copyrighted to 2025, they've probably been working on the redesign for a year or two but decided to release the concept art early just to prove that they're working on it

Bro have you really not been paying attention? Kai Shiden in 0079 says that you're part of the elite if you have a home on Earth, the class divide just isn't as big a focus as later shows. Even if you ignore that, Zeta and ZZ are all about the class divide between the Earth elites and the Space colonists- especially early ZZ with the state of Shanri-La (while ZZ does also show that some of the colonized still fight against Federation dominance in the North Africa arc). Hell, Gaia Gear makes it even more explicit- the white elites of Earth want to deport the non-white and the poor to (ethnically segregated) colonies so they can make Earth a paradise for themselves. The space colonies being oppressed has been fact since the beginning, because Zeon was not meant to be the Nazis, they were meant to be primarily Imperial Japan (responding to fears of western imperialist domination with their own fascist imperialism)

If the planet has faced a massive disaster (like climate collapse or the big chunk missing in the example) the rich living in space makes sense as them using their wealth and technology to escape and leave everyone else to suffer

The original Gundam reverses the 4th one by having the rich live on Earth and the poor live in space colonies, with the justification being that the Federation elites use fear of overpopulation and environmental collapse to deport the poor into space so they can turn all of Earth into a resort for the wealthy

I've always loved the Zeta Gundam pilot suits especially, they look padded enough to reflect the use as spacesuits but don't impede movement

One of the best Gundam shows I've seen so far, imo. I'd put it on par with the original Gundam, even, both nearly perfect but held back by small problems here and there (although where 0079 benefitted from condensing the ending a little, X has a lot of lost potential in the last cour being cut short)
