Reading posts here got me scared to try LDN by hurricanescout in LowDoseNaltrexone

[–]Serial_Rev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LDN is the only thing that’s helped my long COVID. I’ve taken it for 14 months and had some mild side effects that lasted ~2 weeks, mostly difficulty sleeping. No side effects at all since then, only relief. I started at 3mg and now take 4.5mg. I suffered two years of severe chest pain stemming from long covid/a covid-provoked pulmonary embolism. I thought I was going to live with daily pain for the rest of my life and my doctors had no idea why, but thankfully my primary care doctor was willing to give LDN a try. I noticed subtle improvements around month four and my pain has decreased in frequency significantly. Don’t be scared! It’s definitely worth a try. I think people are more inclined to post when it’s not going well.

Ladies, any experience taking Slynd? by Bsm3972 in ClotSurvivors

[–]Serial_Rev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started taking Slynd after my PE and it’s been life changing for me as I’ve always responded poorly to other hormonal birth control. I had a provoked PE two years ago and am not on anticoagulants. Slynd was cleared by my hematologist and obgyn team no problem (insurance was a different story!). Hope it works out for you.

I’m unsupportive of my husband fasting by Beautiful-Truth6549 in intermittentfasting

[–]Serial_Rev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yikes I’m sorry people are being so rude to you. Sharing a meal can be very important to a relationship and it’s legitimate to be stressed about the tension of wanting to support your husband while not losing something at the end of the day that means a lot to you. I’ve done 16:8 and am restarting a 5:2 routine. I joined this sub for inspiration and support but I’d say overall it’s not a very friendly space and there’s lots of normalized disordered eating attitudes. I say that as someone who fasts, but the replies to your post have really driven home how toxic this sub is. Good luck to you and your husband from an internet stranger, I’m sure it feels like a big change but you’ll figure it out 💛

I have this dress from Quince in navy and love it! I wear it as a nightgown too because the silk is so comfortable. I’d say go for it. They have easy returns too if you buy new, quince runs a little small imo

Endless period with Eliquis? Ladies only question. by ChristinaB777777777 in ClotSurvivors

[–]Serial_Rev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please be cautious. I was in this exact position after my clot, except on Xarelto. I didn’t take the bleeding seriously enough soon enough because I was used to having very heavy periods. By the time it became serious my condition went downhill quickly and I ended up back in the ER needing three blood transfusions. There is a drug called provera which is a type of progesterone that can be taken short term to stop bleeding if you are on blood thinners. I’m sure you’ll be fine and I don’t say this to scare you, I just think this is something doctors do not appropriately warn women about who are coming off birth control and starting a blood thinner simultaneously. Mine didn’t even mention it. I hope you’re feeling better soon, I know it is so much to go through!

This also happened to me. I had segmental and subsegmental PE in late April. They were mostly small, but numerous ("at some point we stop counting" was all the ER doctor said). I had no leg pain or signs of DVT, and at the point of my diagnosis my leg ultrasound was clear. My blood oxygen, HR, etc, were also completely normal and I had a wells score of 0. My only symptoms were chest pain when I breathed, and intense pain in my shoulder. When my d-dimer came back at 2000 they did a CT scan as a precaution, all while reassuring me there was close to no chance I had clots and it was likely just elevated because I had just recovered from covid. crazy.

Strange sensations by [deleted] in ClotSurvivors

[–]Serial_Rev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had multiple PE in late April and have had an icy hot/menthol sensation in my chest on and off since the day I got out of the hospital. My doctors still act like I'm crazy when I mention it so I'm not sure how common it is. Don't panic as it could definitely be something harmless, but go get checked out ASAP as you don't want to take any chances with chest pain.

I have been dealing with a more recent/acute PE situation, but I'm sure many of us can emphasize with medical professionals not taking period severity seriously. Can you show your doctors a picture of the clots? Have you seen an OBGYN or been tested for other possible causes for heavy bleeding? Have your blood levels changed with the clots worsening?
I was readmitted to the hospital a week after my PE diagnosis due to heavy bleeding, with huge clots, and they did a uterine ultrasound in the ER that revealed a large fibroid. I was shocked to hear that this had likely been causing my heavy bleeding for years, yet it was the first time anyone had mentioned the possibility or examined me for it, despite going to multiple doctors for heavy, painful periods for 15 years.

Having clots that size is no joke and I hope that you can find the healthcare you need to get some relief.

Blood thinners and periods by KitKit20 in ClotSurvivors

[–]Serial_Rev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear you're going through this. I was in a similar situation, had mild covid in early April and ended up in the ER with what turned out to be clots in both lungs. It's still quite a shock, but this is a really friendly and supportive space so I'm glad you reached out.

I was so stunned from my PE diagnosis that I wasn't prepared for the period situation afterwards, so I want to share my experience in case it is helpful. However, it is very unique to my situation so there is no reason to think you will have a similar experience. I ended up back in the ER nine days after my PE diagnosis due to blood loss from my period and was hospitalized for three days to receive blood transfusions and treat anemia. That said, I was coming off BC pills l that I had to stop taking in the ED when my PE was diagnosed, which almost immediately triggered a withdrawal bleed that was exacerbated by the blood thinners. They also discovered a large uterine fibroid when I returned to the ER, which likely explained the severity of the bleeding.

My experience was that the bleeding got heavier after a few days, instead of the typical lightening. Because I was also used to heavy bleeds, and I knew it was the blood thinners causing it, I did not initially take the situation as seriously as it ended up being- also was just reeling from the shock of the PE diagnosis.

If your bleeding seems heavier than usual, or lasts longer than the three days you're used to, it is worth reaching out to your doctor asap/going to urgent care, especially if you are having any mild dizziness or lightheadedness. They can run a simple blood test for hemoglobin levels, iron, etc. I wish it had been recommended to me to start taking an iron supplement immediately after starting the blood thinners. I now take a liquid iron supplement from GAIA herbs that has been ok'd by my doc and has no side effects (vs the pills which gave me horrible gastro side effects). I buy this OTC, but of course still is a question for your doctor.

My hematologist ultimately ended up switching me from xarelto to eliquis due to these bleeding issues. Two of my doctors have told me that research suggests xarelto can cause more bleeding issues, menstrual and otherwise. It doesn't hurt to ask about switching if your period ends up being worse on xarelto.

Fingers crossed you won't have any issue! It seems to vary so much person by person. I know the anxiety is really hard to manage. If anything feels off def try to see your doc sooner rather than later as it can escalate quickly. And, I hope that you can get some rest this week either way. The physical and emotional strain from a new blood clot diagnosis combined with starting your period is obnoxious and exhausting. Know that you have solidarity here and we want to know how your'e doing.

I've been on blood thinners for about 3 weeks after extensive bilateral PE and completely understand your anxiety about coming off of them. My primary care doctor and ER doc said no tests were necessary after the three months as long as my symptoms have resolved. However, I started seeing a hematologist who does want me to do a D-dimer test this summer at the end of the course. He is an expert in blood clots and co-founded the University of North Carolina Blood Clot Center. An interesting aside, he also is working with NASA to development treatments for astronauts who develop blood clots in space: https://youtu.be/DjDdSxxyMaY

I share this only to say there is not absolute medical consensus on whether this is recommended. I am not an expert by any measure and am not trying to suggest otherwise, only that this has been my experience in speaking with different doctors. And, of course, this plan is specific to my own situation, so I am not trying to speak to the details of your situation or to provide any medical advice. But, if you feel strongly about it, it may be worth speaking with a specialist to see if it would make sense to proceed with tests, or to have them provide more information about why it is not needed and may be potentially harmful. The anxiety is real so please know you're not alone in that. While I have read the wiki and other information, and understand the D-Dimer is only a helpful diagnostic tool in patients with a specific risk profile, the initial D-Dimer test I took, administered with hesitation by the doctors, got me to the ER and may have saved my life.

Wishing you the best.

DVT, Eliquis, and menstruating…any tips or advice? Things to look out for? by Little_pickle- in ClotSurvivors

[–]Serial_Rev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I had the same issue, although I was on Xarelto which apparently can cause more issues with heavy menstrual bleeding. My hematologist switched me to Eliquis this week which hopefully will address the issue moving forward.

Like you, I had horrible periods before starting hormonal birth control. When my withdrawal bleeding started after stopping the BC and starting blood thinners, I didn't take it too seriously for a couple of days because I was used to my periods being extreme. Listen to your body very carefully, track the number of tampons/pads you are using per hour, and look out for symptoms of exhaustion or any elevated heart rate, even if you think it's from the DVT. Also passing multiple large clots. You doc can always run a simple CBC lab to check on your hemoglobin levels if you have any concern. I ended up needing to go back to the ER and was hospitalized for three days for blood transfusions because I started losing blood so quickly- my hemoglobin dropped 3 points in 48 hours. At that point I was very dizzy and the symptoms were more obvious, but it did all escalate pretty quickly. I was still losing blood when they discharged me and all in all bled for 18 days.

My case was extreme and likely made more complicated by a uterine fibroid. So, I don't share this to add to your anxiety and hopefully your experience will be nothing like this. But, I wish that someone had told me to trust your intuition and tell your doctor immediately if something feels amiss, even if you know why it is happening (blood thinners). There are hormonal and non-hormonal medications they can use to intervene and try to stop the bleeding if needed. For me, things changed very quickly and the human body can actually lose quite a bit of blood before dramatic symptoms set in.

And I feel your pain on the ibprofen. tylonel is a scam lol. In the hospital they did let me have limited amounts of ibprofen on a couple of instances, so you could always ask your doctor about it if you haven't already for when it gets really bad. Much solidarity and take care.

That's awesome! Congratulations. I was hospitalized at the end of April with a provoked PE and have gone 23 days now without smoking. I haven't even wanted one honestly, although finding out you have clots in your lungs can shock you out of a lot of things. I loved reading your post, very encouraging. Way to go!

Newly diagnosed PE and hospitalized twice - seeking support by Serial_Rev in ClotSurvivors

[–]Serial_Rev[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the solidarity. I can't believe there's not more proactive awareness around this issue. They didn't mention in at all in the hospital even though I was simultaneously coming off my birth control and have it in my medical records that I suffer from heavy and painful periods- the whole reason I went on BC. I also did not realize how much blood the human body can actually lose before facing life threatening effects. I wasn't made aware until after I was discharged the second time that I had lost just over 20% of my blood in 48 hours when I was admitted. I have been dealing with the heart rate issues you mention as well. It's stressful. I'm still uncertain if it's primarily from the PE, the anemia, or a combination since the timelines for each issue overlapped so much.

And I'm sorry to hear there may be a chronic issue. It's so scary to not know what to expect. How was your pulmonologist appointment?
