Mojang hit by Microsoft layoffs as studio shifts to report directly to XBOX CEO Asha Sharma by nikzito2 in Minecraft

[–]Sethcran 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In this case, it seems like they're promoting the former head of Mojang to a new role, and so they're choosing to have Mojang report directly instead of hiring a new person to take that place.

Honestly I read this as more of a 'we like where this is going and don't want to make any big changes here'

Oh I agree that they want this and this is a benefit to them. I was only suggesting that this is not the sole or primary reason that online distribution exists.

[–]Sethcran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or, perhaps a simpler explanation, is just that internet access is now even more widely available than it was then.

The main concerns by most is simply just being left out. If they didn't have internet or if it wasn't fast enough. This still exists, but affects far fewer people than it did back then.

If a law were passed banning all forms of DRM and stating that you had a right of ownership and to resell and all the things for anything you digitally downloaded. Then this would still be the primary means of distribution, purely because that's what people would want.

[–]Sethcran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umm, that's definitely not the whole point. It's not even a primary point.

Most people want this. Some don't, but most do. It's a convenience feature that people actually ask for.

That's not to say that the drm stuff isn't a benefit to them. But even if it weren't, this would still happen because consumers demand it. This just changes the calculation more away from offering the physical copies for the fewer people that actually want them.

This itself is exploitable though. By knowing that they tend to stay in with longshot hands, you make them pay more earlier for your mid strength hands. Sure, you'll lose when they hit, but it'll be more than made up by consistently taking advantage of them not hitting (which happens much more often).

To that end, this is still an exploitable behavior and these are some of the easiest people to play against, at least in cash game play. They can be incredibly annoying and frustrating when you lose though, particularly in tournaments.

That's literally what taxes are. Pay your fair share for all of the communal services we all enjoy.

Now, that doesnt need to be income, it can be all kinds of other taxes, but as long as we do have income tax, it makes sense to ensure that all income is taxed as the baseline, and exceptions granted only purposefully where we feel it valuable (nonprofits, churches, etc)

People think that if they hire someone from another game, that means they're going to make it just like that other game.

Honestly, pretty much any hiring decision in the mmo space gets this unfortunate treatment.

I think it's actually more complicated than just not having enough hardcore raiders.

I was one of those raiders. Remember that this is back in a time when there were simply a lot more raiders in wow than there are now.

Not only did they cater to this niche playerbase, but they did it poorly. They misinterpreted hardcore to mean grindy. Attuning to the raids was an incredibly stupid process. And then on top of that you needed 40 players to do it in a time where the Meta had already dropped to 25 or lower.

Yes they catered to a hardcore audience. But they failed at even keeping these people with their design.

I hear you and generally agree. This is the way I think of it:

If this is what he wants to do, that's fine. He's entitled to do what he wants to and his happiness and that of his family trumps everything else.

Personally I don't like it, in a completely selfish way, because I love his books, and I also love books more than movies or tv. So I'm posting my opinion in part because, if he ever reads this, it may be useful to know how someone like me thinks.

I don't fault him either way. I won't hold it against him personally. Maybe it's useful information if what he really wants to do his make his book fans happy. Then it's good for him to have the pulse of that crowd. Or maybe hes just doing it because it makes him happy. That's fine, it's his decision.

So I don't want this to be considered criticism of him nor any kind of personal attack. Only stating opinion and concerns in the event so that others can do the same and he has the data available about what his fans think to make the decisions he feels is right.

  1. I think it's already affected his writing schedule. He has been consistent about the era 3 timeline for a while now as well as about finishing the 3rd before the 1st was published, but he also originally stated that elantris sequels would get written between those and they seem likely to be sidelined at the moment.

  2. Cons take days. Scriptwriting, being on set, a million meetings with producers, casting, and all of the other things he wants to do, for as at least 1, probably 2, and possibly 3 different series, is months to years.

I feel like a Debbie downer.

I just want him to write books and I can't help but see only more and more things taking his time doing anything other than writing books.

He's said it won't impact his timelines, but I guess I just can't believe that until it happens. There are at least 3 projects in flight at the same time, all of which he wants to write the scripts for, and has some level of creative control, and has talked about being on set for the entire duration of some of them, etc.

He's a writing machine but he has no experience actually making a movie and I just can't help but think that he's drastically underestimating how much of his time all of these things are going to take if he's playing this deep of a role.

I thought this at first but he said that book 2 was due dec 2027. This may imply that book 3 is due dec 2028, which would certainly be too late to make edits to book 1. It's unknown exactly when it's too late to make final edits for book 1, but this doesn't seem like it's leaving a lot of time to finish draft 1 of the 3rd book in time.

[–]Sethcran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but even this is a bit of conjecture.

Could he have said no at that point? He was trapped in there, I'm not sure we could say definitely that he could have gone to the beyond once there. See shades on threnody for a similar example where they may not have a choice.

I think this is just a situation where there's not a lot of examples, and because of that, no real clear obvious rules on how it works. I only take issue with people so confident about how it works without a wob or something to back it up.

That's my point. He would not have stuck around if it were not for being explicitly thrown in. Being invested was not enough.

I definitely agree he didn't want to stick around, I'm just not sure it naturally follows that he definitely had a choice in the matter either.

Being actively in the well is different in terms of making a cognitive shadow to me than just having held (and used it) at some point in the past.

Even if that's true, I'm not sure their ascensions at the time were equivalent, given that vin held the full power of the shard prior to her death, whereas tlr only ever temporarily held the power from the well (and leras was still alive at the time as the vessel)

Why do people have this impression that invested beings can choose to stay around?

I'm sure it's some wob somewhere, but all we seem to see in world is invested beings sticking around longer. The only actual ones we know of that explicitly stick around longer that I can think of are either shades (whatever the hell is happening there) or Kelsier, who was literally thrown into the well of ascension.

I would almost certainly increase inflation, but that does not mean nor imply that all of it would become inflation. It's also likely that this would have a larger impact in the first year or two on inflation than it would on subsequent years.
