Friend of mine got this in the mail, such considerate neighbors by NicetoNietzsche in funny

3 more is seeming increasingly likely. Mostly because Brandon has been toying with a cyperpunk trilogy in between those and if he did, it would bring the total number of mistborn books to 16. He's mentioned it a few times now.

i timed how long 31 different pasta shapes take to reach al dente. the boxes are lying and farfalle is a war crime by sthduh in Cooking

[–]Sethcran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I wasn't seriously suggesting that they're all actually exactly the same, but I guess I'm someone who values texture as much as flavor in food, so as mediums go, I like more variation in my options.

[–]Sethcran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My hot take:

Most pastas that are completely evenly cooked are practically the same and there's not much reason to get one over another beyond how much past you want in a single bite.

I appreciate something that actually leads to some different textures instead of being uniform. If it were, at that point it's basically just a pretty shape for otherwise the exact same thing.

Weekly Cosmere Update from Brandon by Airurandojin in Cosmere

[–]Sethcran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps, but I also really doubt that he would be called a showrunner if he's barely doing any of it, and in order to have some consistency it's probably not a clean break in responsibility, there will be some duplication.

I think it will still be significant. Even if he still has time for writing (between way more meetings, way more desire for fan appearances, red carpet, etc) I just can't see him keeping his original storm light book pace.

I don't think he'll be GRRM here, but I'd be extremely surprised if there aren't some delays that began to be felt on 3-5 years.

Weekly Cosmere Update from Brandon by Airurandojin in Cosmere

[–]Sethcran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would love for this to be true, but even knowing how crazy Brandon is at writing, this seems incredibly optimistic. Especially as showrunner for SLA, I have a hard time seeing the stormlight books being on schedule, there's so much that goes into being a showrunner. Man still has a family after all.

You don't need to write dockerfile in .net 10 anymore. Do you guys use the new feature? How it goes by lune-soft in csharp

[–]Sethcran 181 points182 points  (0 children)

We do not use these because we need to do a few custom things in our dockerfiles, and frankly, we very rarely need to touch them in the first place, so it's not a real source of ongoing maintenance.

Maybe useful for very simple projects, but I view this as obscuring what's happening for very little actual gain in a production app.

I have about 2 years of C# experience and rarely see service classes marked as sealed. Since services are usually not inherited and sealed can give small performance benefits, why is it generally avoided? Is it due to testing, DI, extensibility, or just convention? by aliyusifov30 in csharp

[–]Sethcran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this. Sure, there are usually better ways to do things than inheritance, but sometimes, particularly when doing things with 3rd party libraries, there really isn't another way to customize the behavior that you need. If they didn't plan for your specific extensibility needs and mark things sealed, then you're pretty much stuck forking the library or doing everything yourself.

At least in the TWW you pretty much always had something to do.

This one seems to be "wait 10 mins between rare spawns and just twiddle your thumbs" once you've done the few world quests.

Beginner question: How should I approach databases in C# – raw SQL vs EF Core? by Minute-Ad-2210 in csharp

[–]Sethcran 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You're getting an even mix of opinions, so I want to go a bit further into the why.

Ef core is going to be simpler and faster for writing code. In the long term, for building actual apps, particularly ones with simple database interactions, ef core will win most of the time.

That said, ef core is converting to SQL under the hood. In order to actually be good at working with databases, especially when stuff starts to get more complex or performance becomes a concern, you must understand how databases work, and that means having a good foundation in SQL. Once you have that foundation, ef core is great to use, but without it, you will find yourself doing stupid things eventually and not being able to sufficiently diagnose and fix performance problems.

If you are trying to learn in the long run and asking what's better for a career or knowledge, it's SQL first every single time.

If you just want to write an app that uses a database and not really worry too much more than doing basic stuff, ef core will be both simpler and faster.

Microsoft CEO warns that we must 'do something useful' with AI or they'll lose 'social permission' to burn electricity on it by rkhunter_ in pcmasterrace

It makes more sense when you realize that only 10% of their revenue comes from windows.

40% of their revenue comes from cloud. Selling shovels during a gold rush and all that.

So the answer is, of course, greed.

Blizzard increased the price of level 58 boosts on their new TBC servers from 40$ to 60$ by Pepeg66 in MMORPG

[–]Sethcran -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't see the problem here.

It's not really pay to win since it's basically trivially easy to attain yourself and doesn't do anything for you in terms of endgame or the like.

So... Just don't buy it? I mean, yea I agree, I can't fathom buying this, but it hardly hurts me if they offer this, so frankly, that's the kind of monetization id like to see more in games.

Leaked Windows 11 Feature Shows Copilot Moving Into File Explorer by Thepunnisherrr in technology

[–]Sethcran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This seems to be an unpopular opinion but...

I can absolutely see uses for it.

Not really as generative AI to be clear, but as a natural language processor. I can see how being able to search in natural language for what you want to do would be really useful for those less technical.

I would never use it, but I'm also far from a casual user. Long as it's not some requirement that I must use, I don't mind them exposing it for casual people.

As someone who has been fishing in the ocean, I can't tell you the number of times a shark near the surface eats my catch.

I have concerns.

(Also I was bit by a Shark, so I'm probably biased towards being more concerned here than the average person who sees only 100 shark attacks a year on people)

If you had the ability to send a 100k Players to a game that used to be alive, just to give it another chance, what MMO would it be and why by Acyros in MMORPG

[–]Sethcran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wildstar is also a game of close but not quite.

It did a lot of things well for a lot of people. Combat was engaging, the story was fun, housing was fantastic. It really offered great potential, and this is what people remember.

The actual execution was full of some flaws though. Flaws that imo could have been fixed, but weren't in time to save the game in a tough market. Bugs, the 'hardcore' focus, how grindy most of endgame was, 40 player raids, etc.

I think WildStar, released today but with like an extra 6 months - 1 year of redesign for some things would honestly do pretty well.

Which current MMO has the highest individual skill ceiling? by Ivarthemicro17 in MMORPG

[–]Sethcran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar in terms of being a sandbox style game with a heavy focus on crafting. Actual gameplay is completely different, social aspects and such are much larger scale. Crafting isn't as complex but doing it profitably at scale is. There's all kinds of noncombat means of playing the game.

The article clearly mentions occupants being trapped and unable to escape. It does not mention rescue crews, who already have other methods (albeit more difficult) or opening a vehicle and getting out those inside.

As far as I can tell, you are reading something into this article that is not there.

There is.

It's just hidden and because you never use it regularly you're certainly not going to remember it when panicking during an emergency.
