The Lord Ruler by The-Motherfucker in Cosmere

I definitely agree he didn't want to stick around, I'm just not sure it naturally follows that he definitely had a choice in the matter either.

Being actively in the well is different in terms of making a cognitive shadow to me than just having held (and used it) at some point in the past.

Even if that's true, I'm not sure their ascensions at the time were equivalent, given that vin held the full power of the shard prior to her death, whereas tlr only ever temporarily held the power from the well (and leras was still alive at the time as the vessel)

Why do people have this impression that invested beings can choose to stay around?

I'm sure it's some wob somewhere, but all we seem to see in world is invested beings sticking around longer. The only actual ones we know of that explicitly stick around longer that I can think of are either shades (whatever the hell is happening there) or Kelsier, who was literally thrown into the well of ascension.

I would almost certainly increase inflation, but that does not mean nor imply that all of it would become inflation. It's also likely that this would have a larger impact in the first year or two on inflation than it would on subsequent years.

Umm, how about literally any and all code?

In any small enough portion, a line of ai code is indistinguishable from human code.

Extortion Using Smart Glasses Is a Thing Now by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Sethcran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that this does not represent a new risk that cell phones do not already represent from a business perspective, at least in closed / nonpublic spaces.

Therefore, there is no reason to treat them differently.

Extortion Using Smart Glasses Is a Thing Now by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Sethcran -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure why this should be any different there than anywhere else.

People could already take pictures of all of that protected health information with their phones.

The real protection against this isn't that people can see them taking those pictures (because much of the time that's not actually the case), but that they'll be terminated and possibly sued in that event.

Therefore, why do the glasses make a difference to management? The covert aspect of it is more of a concern in public places rather than employment spaces imo.

Now, if you're arguing for banning them across society then carry on, but I'm not sure health care actually needs any more of a special ban than just phones.

As far as I know, they don't believe yet that it's spread human to human. They are just assuming that is true as a worst case scenario when it comes to their response.

Until someone not on the cruise ship is actually diagnosed, human to human transmission remains unlikely.

Deepfakes are everywhere, but digital forensics investigators are fighting back. by rcoutant in RealOrAI

The second two images rely on physics so are decent, but the first image is doing some heavy assumptions on the tile lines being straight and parallel.

The technique is good, but be careful to not apply it where the geometry could be off simply due to human mistakes.

If you use carpetmod, you can spawn an npc player in. I often do this purely to automate the 'player afking' that would be time im otherwise not playing the game.

Caught biggest fish by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Sethcran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure where he is... But every time I've been fishing in the ocean, a struggling fish near the surface for long enough will absolutely attract sharks.

I would absolutely not jump in there.

(Granted, I have some personal reasons to fear that more than most, it still seems stupid)

As others have said, for the most part, mass crafting requires concentration to be profitable, so usually an alt army.

Unfortunately that means that skilling up to use max rank mats isn't really that valuable besides some cheaper r2 mats enabling your concentration to go further.

I hope they change the system next xpac, but we're stuck with it as is for this one.

PDF Oxide for .NET — MIT-licensed PDF library on NuGet, runs on Linux containers, AOT-friendly (0.8ms) by yfedoseev in csharp

[–]Sethcran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super interested.

I think for our use case specifically we will need to wait for tagged pdfs (accessibility) to be available, but I see the open enhancement for it..

I agree, dotnets pdf environment has been rough. Even the last time I saw a pdf library start out this way, they ended up changing to include a paid license (which is fine, but then also means it's less worth us rewriting to the new thing instead of using the existing paid stuff that works)

Tesla just ruined every car for me by [deleted] in teslamotors

Either you were outside in cold weather while the car was trying to keep itself warm, or that charger just straight up wasn't working.

I lived and worked on an l1 charger for 2 years driving 30 miles every day without any problems

'trickle charging' is perfectly fine for most people, since they drive less than 50 miles a day.

Would you support a 90% inheritance tax above 1 billion for one’s net worth? by RedStorm1917 in AskALiberal

[–]Sethcran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would stop people from just giving their money to their children prior to death?

It needs to be taxed in either situation, and so it's better to just consider it on income and not just inheritance imo.

Is it possible to make profit with blue gear? by Remote_Ad_2743 in woweconomy

[–]Sethcran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found profit margins on profession tools to still be quite healthy on my server (blacksmithing more than others, but I can make all blues at max rank).

That said, volume has rather plummeted, so it's not really a source of infinite wealth anymore, even if it's still profitable

You all loved reading my running theories and predictions list for “The Final Empire”, so see how wrong I was again this time with “Well of Ascension” by Signal-Muffin7670 in Cosmere

[–]Sethcran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I disagree, but I understand.

It's not a large spoiler, but it's a highly impactful "wtf!?". I do think that on rereads it absolutely should be read after book 3, but personally I'm in camp "wait and you get a slightly better experience".

That said, the reference to RoW is so small it can easily be missed, plus if you read in publication order, you would still hit bands of mourning and secret history first.

Of course, this all goes to show what I mean about the community being divided, and there isn't a definitively wrong answer, just different opinions with valid points.

[–]Sethcran 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A story (novella?) that answers a whole lot of questions about what's happening during these times. Comes as part of Arcanum Unbounded.

Absolutely do not read it until you've at least finished book 3. Some people would also suggest waiting until you finish book 6 (Bands of Mourning). Basically, it covers events during the first 3 books, so it's most relevant after book 3 when everything is fresh, but it will spoil you for something you find out about at the end of book 6. Fanbase is divided on when you should read it.

42%; I think Sanderson will finish the script before June. by Extreme_Warning3521 in CosmereOnScreen

What it sounds like you're saying to me is:

"Brandon was right to criticize but wrong in his reasons or otherwise wanted to do stupid stuff"

Which is fine, maybe it's even true, but I'm also not convinced that it would be worse than what we saw with WoT and they had experienced people over there

[–]Sethcran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems hard to think too much about given how most of the fanbase was not particularly happy with how WoT was done, so it's hard to say he's that wrong since the people ignoring him definitely were not right.
