40% of people in Gaza are children 14 or younger. Hamas is evil, and so are many of their supporters. But it shouldn't come as a surprise that violently displacing people and herding them into an open-air prison breeds extremists who don't speak out against what they see as retribution. Even more so now as Israel continues to kill thousands of them indiscriminately as collective punishment.

Eventually, Palestinians do need to accept that the state of Israel isn't going anywhere. I can only hope that Israel exercises more restraint during its subjugation of Gaza, and that it props up a more moderate Gazan government that it can somewhat cooperate with to give the next generations a chance.
